If the H80i is the same price, id rather go for that... Almost the same performance at the same price and its less fiddly to fit as well as not suffer from memory clearance issues

I think it's about time Techpowerup switch to a CPU with higher tdp. All the highend aircoolers have reached to a point where they all perform equally for mainstream processors.

Need a cooler that big to cool your burning CPU then it's time to think AIO water cooling because that thing is huge and at 970 grams it's no light weight either and so far I have yet to see an HSF review that makes me want to upgrade from my 2011 Thermolab Baram in push/pull config

H80 is also far louder for the same performance. 44 vs 56 dBA as for clearance. Thats what the R1 Universal is for since it has 100% memory clearance and generally performs the same or just 1'C worse than the Ultimate.

Weight is not an issue in today's world its been what nearly 7-8years since the D14 launched? yeah not a problem. As for AIOs they serve a purpose but generally speaking 99% of AIOs fail to actually beat high end air in terms of performance to noise. Sure they can equal or exceed high end air but generally do it at noise levels that are 5-7 even 10 dBA higher. Granted thats starting to change finally but yeah. Stuff the R1 Universal which doesn't have memory compatibility issues. Basically comes in cheaper performs the same as and is quieter than most AIOs. This of course does not apply to the extreme high end AIOs and custom kits like the Predators / Swiftechs / and full on custom liquid.

I have this cooler on a Xeon V3 1230 works fine with only one fan.

I was doing alot of video encoding so ended up getting this because with the stock cooler my CPU was sitting on 80deg C now its low 50's when video encoding. And its quiet.

I attached a quiet cooler master 80mm to the side of the tower makes a tiny bit of a difference.

Stock fans on the h80 are noisey, just change them for something else. You'll still get pump noise but it's honestly not that loud

Yeah, I recently took the dive to AIO. Air coolers are getting ridiculous.... at least for a 7700k owner.

Yes and no... Ive bought many fans over the last 2 years normally used with watercooling and some of them have moved a lot of air while remaining quite silent.

I have tried:

Corsair 120SP Performance Edition - Had these for a while on my H80 before they were replaced for the GTs... Very loud
Original Gentle Typhoons @1850RPM - best noise to performance ratio
Nidec 'Darkside' Gentle Typhoons @2000RPM -- These have the same fan design as the original GT's but the motor is junk. Mine devloped a loud rattling/grinding noise after a while but performance is around the same as the original GTs
EK Vardar F4@2200RPM - These fans are good but they arent GT's. they were significantly louder but performance was decent.
Fractal Design Venturi HP-12's@1800RPM -- Absolutely silent up until the 1300 mark where you would start to hear a little woosh. Unfortunately i swapped them out because i dont think they had as much static pressure

I am currently using Corsair 120ML Pro's via onboard PWM with a custom fan profile -- they are crusing at 1300rpm and absolutely silent and my pc is idling at 33'c. When gaming these ramp up to 1700rpm which is about their 70% when they are clearly audible. I could run the fans much slower if i wanted to. even at 1500rpm they are still fairly quiet. I could leave it like this all day. even when gaming.

most fans were used in conjunction with my NZXT Sentry Mix 2 fan controller and never pushed beyond 70% apart from when i initially installed them and wanted to see how loud they got.

On my 5820k I have had a Corsair H100 and a Swiftech 240. I replaced them with the original R1 and would never go back to AIO's. Corsair fans are ridiculous sounding, and the Swiftech pump made a slight ticking noise that drove me crazy. Perhaps for people that are wanting to OC to the CPU's limit, or run benchmarks that put it under absolute full load, then I do agree with your point. But if you just play games, encode videos, do some 3D modeling, or other everyday workloads, the R1 is extremely quite and my temps are still very close to the Swiftech. Again, I'm not running Prime95 type workloads, and my OC is conservative @ 4.0ghz all core, 4.3ghz 1&2 core. But for this use case, I am far happier with the R1.

those are the same fans I have on my Baram quiet as and push alot of air when I run F@H on the CPU all 8 cores it's lucky to get to 52c

I think it's worth talking about AIO, when air coolers get this big. Hell, I think even one fan/212evo is ridiculous, but that's just me.

Price: air coolers win
Silence: air coolers win
Reliability: air coolers win
Performance: it's a draw

As to clearance you just have to choose the cooler carefully according to your motherboard and RAM choices.

I'm using the Noctua NH-D15S with an i7-6850k. As noted in the cooling tests here, the D15S' temps are within a degree of the Ultimate. It also costs $10 less and it does not have the component clearance issues of the Cryorig cooler.

The NH-D15S is innovative because it's asymmetric. The fan and fin stack are offset relative to the CPU chip so, when installed correctly, the cooler doesn't interfere with the first PCIe slot. And, because it only has a single fan mounted between dual fin stacks, it also doesn't interfere with the DIMM sockets.

As you can tell, I really like this cooler. It replaced a 240 mm AIO because I just couldn't stand the noise of the AIO anymore. The D15S is much quieter than the AIO while providing almost equivalent cooling. Oh, and it will never spring a leak...
