How often should we upgrade

Like the title says how often should we upgrade I have the 7th generation intel cpu and ddr4 memory I was basically waiting for the ddr5 memory people say that’s been slated for 2020 release dates. Which I think is probably the right time for me to upgrade, they usually stop supporting mobo and cpu and bios updates when the new hardware comes out. But as of now I’m stil receiving updates for everything. And do we really need turbo boost from intel unless you get the really high end and fasted cpu anyways. I’ve upgraded in March of this year and my gpu in July. I think I’m good to go till 2020.

How often should we upgrade

With "should" being the operative word there, you "should" upgrade when your current system no longer meets your needs - securely. That "securely" is important. An old XP system may meet a person,s needs, but if those needs require Internet access, it cannot do it securely.

Most games theses days are now have specs for 4K and my pc is definitely supports 4K, I won’t think we see anything better then that till the new ddr5 memory’s come out. I’m starting to save up now to upgrade in 2020.

I hope to see new gpus by then 1100s or whatever is next in line to come, I’ve seen 8k talks already but I’m happy with 4K.

I hadn't touched my rig since 2014. I5 4670K, GTX 770, mechanical hard drive, Windows 7 and 8gb of ram. That rig was still beefy enough to power just about anything. I was getting some windows errors that needed a clean install, so I got an SSD, 16gb of ram, windows 10, and an RX580. Since I game on 1080P, that should hold me over for a few years.

I just installed a m.2 SSD and I love it, its like having a whole new pc. I haven't touched my psu since 2015 that's still running good

I remember reading one of the moderators comments in regards to when a person should upgrade, I can't remember which mod it was, but I thought to myself. Dead on. Period. End of story. Nothing else needs to be said. That comment was essentially along the lines of what Bill said. Although....he added the securely part...and it's something that a person might not think much about, but as usual....I have to nod and agree with Bill.

The system in my 'system specs' may be a few years old, but for what I'm doing....it is still overkill. Every time I fire up a new title and crank the settings up to high/ultra....I'm still amazed it ALWAYS holds 60 FPS. I'm about as blind as a bat, so I don't see myself caring much now or in the future for going higher than 1080p....so I'd probably upgrade something - if it breaks perhaps. Anything else...is probably just a want....that I don't need.

I know people get the upgrade itch and want whats new....but there is something about the familiarity and stability of an older system that you know well....that should at least be ~ appreciated.

@Bill_Bright and @Liquid Cool both hit the nail on the head. There is no "should" upgrade time. If your system does all YOU want it to (securely, nod to Bill), then it is not outdated.

No reason to fall for the PC rat race. It's unnecessary for most of us.

Both boards have Xeon W 3520 @3.9ghz. my son uses his everyday with GTX 970,,,,the only thing he complains about is the brightness of the UV i installed.

a true enthusiast buys stuff he dosnt need just for the fun of it.. once you reach the broken toaster phase its time you found a new hobby or at least something else to waste you spare cash on..

ten years or so ago i joined TPU as an enthusiast.. then for the next eight or so years i stopped being a PC enthusiast.. never visited TPU and wasted my spare cash on other things..

eight years in the broken toaster phase running window XP then i bought a new PC and became a PC enthusiast again.. but the PC enthusiast phase is about finished.. it never lasts that long with any one thing.. my PC is now a toaster again..

This is an inherently personal question. What everybody is else does has absolutely ZERO bearing on what I will do. It is simply needs based for most. For others, there are wants and e-peen, but again, this is allllllllllll personal preference.

For me personally; I upgrade when the performance of the PC no longer meets my expectations. While I understand the fun of tinkering inside PC, too often the upgrade is merely for synthetic performance as opposed to real world.
