There aren't really external HDD's that are "made to be reliable". If you want "reliable" you could put a WD Red 2.5'' in a USB3 2.5'' enclosure. Otherwise any name branded HDD should be fine, the My Elements is the newer of the bunch, I would choose that.

Whenever anyone asks me about external hard drive's ,I always have pretty much the same answer except for a few limited exceptions.

When you need an external drive for anything other than a low power required solution ,(imo/ime)your best bet is to purchase an external hard drive cage, or caddy, or dock and install a standard sata Drive in it. The reason I avoid external drives is because they will only ever be an external drive ,but with an external mounted sata hard drive, you have the option of using it for other applications as an internal drive or continue to use as an Extertal drive. I also use them all the time for my kids Xbox and PlayStation's for external expansion & swapping them is way easier for me, Plus there are often far more inexpensive than dedicated external drives.

So I would say purchase a $5 or $10 hard drive cage and install either one of your existing internal drives or purchase a one.i recommend Orico brand enclosures/caddies/docks. They are inexpensive & well made.

If it must be a dedicated external drive I purchased a Western Digital passport I believe and it's run for years perfectly fine as an expansion drive for my nephews Xbox one

my iphone was loading really slow, so if someone suggested this already, just ignore

I've RMA'ed two of the 4 in my RAID-5 but, the other two and the two replacements have been rock solid but, they most definitely can fail.

Im not saying WD Blacks wont fail, ALL drives fail at some point, but from all the drives I have used and sold to my clients the WD Black has been the best out of the lot, rock solid performance and with 5 yr warranty, cant be beat.

I really never had terrible experience with any current hard drive maker. Of course I tend to stick to reliable well-known brands. Western Digital Seagate etc.

Having a warrantee is always great the problem is when it comes to hard drives, a warranty is kind of a cruel joke. because if you're at the point when your considering RMA ,your storage is lost ,your info is gone ,and you're really pissed off. I don't ever want to have to use a warranty on a hard drive, unless its a new system.

The best performing hdd, as far as reliability,& long life I've ever had are, Maxtor, then Seagate, and in last place would be western digital. I wouldn't say any of those in the list are bad , or better, those are just anecdotal experiences. My longest lasting Drive would've been a Maxtor, then followed by several long lasting Seagate drives ,& the Shortest hdd lifespan I personally had is with western digital (Maxtor is long gone too iirc) but western dig offers a good warranty, in case your patient enuff to give them another shot.seagate is like 2 years. But ime, having a hdd warranty is like having coffin insurance, or a defective codom extended warranty...if your using it, your already boned

I have three Seagate USB 3.0 drives. None have failed in 4 years. Most manufactures now are fairly reliable but remember. BACK IT UP

As long as its a newer model your golden

I had a positive experience with the one that I suggested, I am not 100% sure. Overal their products are good, I haven`t heard complains.
