Sorry i missed your comment.

don't sweat it.

Its looks likes there is still a great interest in X58 on this site and since i properly have one of the more unique X58 system, I mean you dont see many X58 with both a fully bootable m.2 SSD, a GTX 1080 TI and a pretty overclockkable I7 CPU in it at the same time. So its time to share some more :D. Well then have a look at this or not, up to you.

First here is a screenshot of my system with some speed bench of my M.2 SSD and a one with Windows Experience Indexin windows 10, yes windows 10 has Windows Experience Indexbuild in but it is hidden and is not that useful but what the heck for the fun of it right.

Cinebench R15 with CPU at 4.25 GHz and 4.75 GHz but now also with single core score. Only for I7 980X, my I7 920 got a new owner a long time a go.

To se what a powerfull GPU can do to a X58 system here is a some 3dmark Firestrike scores. First run is my 24/7 use and second is when i cram every thing out of her she got.

And a last one is userbenchmark. No screenshot of that. Only a link.

http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/6251436

So thats all.

On X58 its better to run triple channel, if you have 8 GB, i assume its a dual channel.

If you have Bloomfield, stick with what you have, maybe try to overclock it and to tweak timings. Bloomfield requires extreme QPI/DRAM voltage for DDR 2000 and above.

On Gulftown, its possible to reach DDR 2000+ using Uncore 1.5x ratio.

Okay it is a 920. @4 GHz
My plan is to upgrade it to a x5650 or x5670 in 2018.. it is just are there any benefits in going with faster ram for gaming?

And is it possible to use ecc ram on the x58 platform when using a Xeon?

Why 2018? You can get one for cheap on eBay.

Xeons support ECC RAM, but the motherboard also need to support ECC.

There are benefits in having faster RAM for gaming, but nothing drastic, 1-3fps maybe.

I still have a Core i7-920 that's used pretty much daily. My Core i7-6700K blows it away. The fact Nehalem didn't have UEFI support is really a deal breaker for me. The boot is so slow using the same SSD.

You can have EFI booting with Clover/Duet... however, I doubt it will make much difference.
Have you disabled all not used devices in BIOS ?

Its funny why haven any one come up with the ultimate X58 setup yet.

2 x Xeon X5690 with water cooling and oc to like 4.4 GHz or more. thats 12 core/24 threads.
EVGA SR-2 motherboard
Samsung 950 PRO 512 GB M.2 NVMe SSD as main boot/game drive
one or maybe even two GTX 1080 TI. One for 1600P gaming and two for 4K fun.
A but load of ram like 24 GB per CPU.
windows 10 PRO 64 bits.
And else configured with HDD/SSD and other things you else needs.

Can we get a better X58 system than that. It might be a god idea with a bag CAPSLOCKSTUCK for al your drooling. Here wipe your mouth with this handkerchief. Jesus son there is drool all over your keyboard :p

Some people have done it. Games don't work well on dual CPUs. A lot of games are limited to single CPU.

Theres little benefit to running triple channel vs dual channel on x58 unless you mainly play benchmarks... although if you can then sure, why not, but it's certainly not worth spending money on triple channel if you already have dual.

Instead of RAM, you get more from OCing UnCore (~3,6GHz).
