Advanced Micro Devices, the world's second largest manufacturer of x86 central processing units (CPUs) will delay the roll-out of its new enthusiast-class platform to next year, according to sources familiar with the plans of AMD.

The chipmaker only plans to unveil its AMD Phenom FX-80 processor, which is designed for single-processor configurations, in November or December this year, whereas AMD Phenom FX-90 and FX-91 products are set to be released sometime in the first quarter of 2008, sources close to AMD indicated. The move basically delays the introduction of AMD's FASN8 platform, which employs two CPUs and puts AMD's success in the field of computer enthusiasts under question.

AMD Phenom FX-80 quad-core processor is projected to operate at 2.20GHz - 2.40GHz clock-speed, have 2MB of L2 cache (512KB per core), 2MB shared L3 cache, dual-channel PC2-8500 (DDR2 1066MHz) memory controller and AM2+ form-factor with HyperTransport 3.0 bus support. The AMD Phenom FX-90 and FX-91 models are expected to operate in 2.20GHz - 2.60GHz clock-speed ranges and support dual-processor configurations.

The delay of the new CPUs for dual-processor enthusiast platforms essentially postpones the rollout of AMD's new enthusiast-class platform that the chipmaker calls first AMD silicon next-gen 8-core (FASN8), which features a number of innovations beyond just eight processing engines' computing power.

I'm starting to get a little concerned about all these delays from the AMD camp. I hope everything works out in the end.

Hmm true, but these new phenom processors etc, sound rather exciting, if I have the money for one I would get one; but thats unlikely if im at uni next year lol.

The new phenoms due sound promising. However, they keep pushing things back. As we have seen, the delay of the R600 didnt arrive with thunderous applause. Only recently have the graphics cards lived up to the hype in any form. Now, they are delaying the new procs and dies to just a single core in December and dual and quad cores in 2nd half of 08 (if I Read the news story right on tpu here a few days ago). I hope things work out as Wil E said, because Im a huge AMD Fan and I love thier price/performance. But Im seriously considering going a different route with a company who has things at least sorted out.

Sigh... come on AMD. Perhaps outsourcing the fabrication wing wouldn't be that bad of an idea.

i think you read the news wrong....there arent going to be any single cores at launch...first come the Barcelona quads, then FX quads, then desktop quads and dual cores. You shouldn't compare this to R600, that was an ATi fumble, the chip had already been designed by the time AMD stepped in, there wasn't much they could do if they didn't want a huge delay. I'm still hoping AMD hits some magic stepping before release that lets them hit the promised speeds, and then maybe they'll be able to bump up the release schedule.

sure, outsource their native quad core architecture to a fab that isn't specialized for such a chip, get terrible yields. They'd have to work with the fab to get it proper, but to think another manufacturer would focus it's line just to produce AMD chips is ridiculous, so in the end, it would cost even more. What would happen if they outsourced is that their chip designs would become simple, so as to achieve the highest yields possible from just about any fab process. That is something we do not want.
