Windows 10 games lagging

I had minimal FPS around 20 and average around 30-40 FPS in Metro: Last Light Redux. All newer games lagging (DiRT 4...). I have GeForce GTX 970 and Intel Core i5. Is this because Windows 10? In CS:GO i don't have this problem. GTA 5 also works normally but many other new games lagging.

I also had this problem when i had ATI Radeon 7870 XT and the same CPU. All newer games lagging like with GTX 970.

Check your VRAM usage in MSI Afterburner and your RAM usage in whatever monitoring tool you have available. Methinks one of or both are getting filled.

Are you recording or streaming at the same time as playing games?

IMO, 8GB of system RAM is not enough for modern games anymore and that's your problem.

Sorry I disagree.
8GB of RAM should be more than enough to run any game. I just picked up Diablo III and reading it's spec's it calls for no less than 2GB of RAM and for optimal performance it say's 4GB of RAM is recommended.
I haven't played any games that require 8GB of RAM (can't say as I have seen any game that required that much RAM to run).
I have been experiencing this same thing in Diablo III, I changed the game settings to start in 32bit not 64bit and now it doesn't do that.
As for Metro I have not had this happen yet, Not sure, I think the game is set for 32bit.
I am going to say it is a windows 10 and or a 64bit OS issue here.

That is not a newer game. That is a 6 year old game and not a demanding one and doesnt apply here.

When was the last time you reinstalled Windows 10? Did you upgrade from Win7? If so, have you ever done a clean install of Windows 10? Updated all drivers? Video, chipset, sata, etc?

Show me a game that Requires 8GB of RAM to run. It is NOT a RAM issue.
And what is your POINT? that OLD games are not demanding? or that metro or Diablo III are not demanding? LMFAO!

It's some other issue than RAM.
Drivers, settings, OS in 64bit VS 32bit.

We can't outlaw anything as not being an issue until we see some figures. If OP has 200 tabs open in Chrome eating up 6GB RAM then it is a RAM issue...

Okay yes I agree on that. I am going off the supposition that like me the OP would make sure NOTHING was running other than the game you are playing.

If you have Fall Creators Update installed, run Task Manager (ctrl+shift+esc), put it on the performance tab, then select the GPU view. Play the game for a while until you run into a low fps state. Alt+tab out of the game, select the Task Manager, alt+print screen to take a screen shot, paste it into Paint or similar program, save it, and attach it your reply.

Example:

This is Anno 2205 on my system. Nothing is pegged at 100%, ergo, no problems.

1.Make sure the Nvidia control panel is set to Maximum Performance and
2. Keep the shadows and shaders at medium or low ,
3. also turn off AF and CMAA...
4. ALSO set the WIndows Power options to Maximum Performance
5..and set the Windows Power options to not let your harddrive go to sleep.
6. and as a last resort temporarily turn of AV .....test and report back.

I haven't played any games that require 8GB of RAM (can't say as I have seen any game that required that much RAM to run).
I have been experiencing this same thing in Diablo III, I changed the game settings to start in 32bit not 64bit and now it doesn't do that.
As for Metro I have not had this happen yet, Not sure, I think the game is set for 32bit.

So you disagree that 8GB isn't enough for modern games, and your reasoning for this is because you can play games that are 6-8 years old just fine with 8GB of RAM. Yeah, great reasoning skills you have there.

Also, given your system specs, you're turning down settings to get smooth gameplay as well, which reduces the RAM needs for the games as well.

And we also have no idea what he has running in the background. My main system, running Windows 10, idles at over 5GB of memory usage with all the crap I have to have running in the background. That doesn't leave a whole lot of room left for a game if I only had 8GB of RAM.

Agreed but see again I suppose that when playing games anyone would shut all non-essential tasks down and all other background stuff as well. This is why I have little issues playing games I guess.
My Gigabyte Gaming 3 MB helps with that and much more too!
Okay don't get me wrong MORE RAM would be better YES it always IS! I just think the OP should try other things first RAM costs a lot and once all other things are tried then I would say get more RAM. I have yet to play ANY games that require more than 4GB of RAM as stated before. If I where to get any news games I will be getting more RAM YES. BUT metro is NOT a NEW game and therefor I think he has some other issue. JMHO.

Yep, turning down settings will often lower the RAM usage enough to make 8GB sufficient.

If the OP is content running the game on medium, then that is indeed a solution. But he has a much stronger graphics card than you, and really shouldn't have to run it on medium.

Right on Brother but a guy has to start somewhere right? Once he has SMOOTH he can then start bumping things up one at a time!

Here is a screen shoot while playing Dirt4 with the settings I posted above and never even reached 6GB ram usage. EDIT this was a mistake as it was what was used before I even played DIrt 4 as I forgot I had it on (AfterBurner) for hours and hours before I tested Dirt4 So this measurement for DIrt 4 was WRONG. Sorry

So it maybe possible that on High / Ultra settings it could maybe go 8GB or above. <<<Ignore this last sentence please.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, of course. If you want to run a bunch of virtual machines while playing a game at high graphical settings, you’ll definitely need more than 16GB of RAM. But, if gaming is the most demanding thing you do on your computer, 8GB is the minimum and there’s no reason to go beyond 16GB.

Anybody who builds a computer to minimum specifications is either on a very tight budget and going to upgrade later or a poor planner

Alrighty I have run more tests with Dirt4 on my laptop and even with Everything on Ultra settings my Laptop never reached more than a Maximum of 4,762MB of total ram usage measured by HWiNFO64 for everything so I really really doubt it's the 8GB of ram he has as I also have, unless he has a bunch of other stuff going at the same time so I'm going to side on a configuration issue with game settings and the Nvidia control Panel settings and possibly System settings for now at least.
P.s. Also worth mentioning even on Ultra settings I never used more than 3203MB of Vram.
P.s.s Also worth mentioning Dirt 4 is Highly optimized in mho.

i have metro, but i dont have them installed, and im certainly not going through all that to see there is no issue on my end. its gotta be a settign ,or something else.
