Well, I found a GTX 1080 for a decent price from newegg, so I went ahead and got it. I plan on pulling the mobo and psu out of my old rig and setting it up in my basement, let it go to town and see what happens. It's an old nForce 680 but I think it will still be able to run the 1080. I may end up having to get a few additional components but we'll see. If it all works out, then the card pays for itself and maybe a few other goodies. If not, I still got a kick ass card :)

You probably should have just waited until June ish... I know it seems like a long time away, but I fully expect Nvidia will be mass producing GTX 2070 and GTX 2080 for a launch around then. I'm sure they will add an extra $150 to what they wouldn't have done before cause of miners, but it is what it is. I'm personally fine with waiting. I might even just borrow my nephew's PS4 since he never uses it and game on that until GTX 2080 Ti direct from Nvidia store on launch day (assuming I get lucky order in and beat the miners)

I thought about it, but I figure this way I can get at least a few months in and learn a bit more, figure out how deep I want to get in to it.
