The latest titles coming to the HD DVD format will take advantage of their player's internet connection. For example, the soon to be released HD DVD '300' will allow users to re-edit the movie by selecting scenes and reordering them as they see fit. The edit can then be uploaded to a server hosted by the studio and viewed around the world. '300' will be released for Blu-Ray but will lack the re-editing feature and other web based extras because not all Blu-Rays can connect to the internet. As of May, Toshiba's HD DVD owns 70 percent of the high definition player market share, while Sony's Blu-Ray owns 30 percent, excluding the Playstation 3.

that is the first thing i thought when i read the article. toshiba people seem to think that ps3 is only popular for blu-ray movies right now because of lack of games and once that changes there will be less people using blu-ray. but yea, it is all a way of screwing with the numbers as to sway manufacturers to their side.

i compare the ps3 having blue-ray playback to the ps2 having dvd playback, when the ps2 first came out dvd players were still expensive and some ps2 users used to for dvd playback but as the price fell people started to go for stand alone players with more features than the ps2 could offer and no doubt this may happen with the ps3, the only real thing that could sway the punters to one format or the other if you own a ps3 is if you start a disk collection because then you would be less likely to switch to the other format.

the reason there will be a format war is because independent manufacturers do not want sony to be the key holder of the format of the next generation, Sony owns a lot of media companies and film studio and etc as well as the technology and there is no way Sony's rivals will want to pay to use Sony's format, Sony together with Samsung main aim is to gain control of the market then license blu-ray and gain billions in revenue from doing so as well as restrict format advancements so they remain the key holders for a very long time. i Hope Hd-dvd win because all the manufacturers independently will the be able to advance the format without paying the vast royalties.

That's right. If Sony (Who owns Sony Pictures) is the winner of the format war, they can easily fuck with all of the other film studios, charging them more $$$ and swaying filmmakers to use Sony pictures as their distributors. I hope downloading starts to take off soon. Optical discs are like so 20 years ago.

Actually, I have a Samsung BDP-1000 Blu-Ray player, and the PS3 out does it in Blu-Ray in every way. Image quality, audio quality, interface speed, more features, etc., etc.

I don't think standalones are gonna be as good as a PS3. By the time a standalone reaches the level of a PS3 in Blu-Ray playback, we'll likely be on to the next format anyway.

Off Topic: My HD-DVD add-on for the 360 actually has better image quality than the BDP-1000. I only have a 720p set, so most movies are down-scaled from their native 1080i/p, and it seems the image processing power of the 360 does a better job of scaling it. Same with Blu-Ray playback on a PS3 (I don't own one, btw. I borrowed my friend's for a few days to compare). There's definitely some picture noise and artifacts using the BDP-1000 with a 720p set.

I'll have to retest when I get a 1080p set. The image results could be much different then. Still won't change the speed, audio, features advantage the PS3 has, tho.

there is no doubting about it the ps3 and xbox both have far more processing power available to it than a first generation stand alone player made to the bare minimum due to the high prices initially but no doubt the costs will fall and then the enhancements will be made just like when the ps2 came out vs the initial dvd players but a ps2 today vs a middle of the road dvd player would far surpass the playback offered by a ps2.

im not for or against your position, i just figured that the dvd player on the ps2 was great when standalone players were expensive but years later people went out to buy a standalone because they offered new technology. im thinking that there will be new technology to add to the blu-ray players that will outdate the ps3 down the road.

just to reaffirm the balance of my argument i certainly am not anti Sony and no doubt eventually will get a ps3 (when they are reasonably priced of course) but i certainly do not agree with Sony being the Keyholder of the next generation format especially with the influence they have with regards to owning various film studios and their restrictive nature to patents they own.
