Good to know.

It's especially helpful for those occasions when one asks for help and either gets the problem solved or there have been several developments since the topic was started and an update is required to not induce those trying to help in error and / or repeat the advice given.

I remember when I could edit my posts as far back as I wanted and that's the way I liked it. I think locking them after 24 hours because of a rare disgruntled user deleting posts is too draconian as it punishes everyone all the time. Those posts can be restored anyway by an admin/mod, since they're only hidden, so nothing is lost. Sure, we can report our post for unlocking, but it's inconvenient, especially if I need to edit urgently.

People making arguments on here that you don't need to edit posts after a short time is disingenuous.

Bad idea for the majority of the forum (consider all the people in those heated brand debates that could easily just change whatever they said), great idea for some threads. However, in a thread like what are you playing, you should really post a new message rather than edit the old one. Reason - virtually no one who frequents the thread will read skip back a few pages and read it.
That's an interesting set of points and very logical. Like I said, no problem with making additional posts just thought it'd be cleaner to edit the existing ones. No worries.

We are very supportive with unlocking the post edit time limit, if any somewhat reasonable reason is given, just use report post.
Ok, very cool.

Like anything, any member posts you have to have a following of people that even care. Those people also can’t edit it’s a balance.

As far as technical forums go I can’t imagine anything important enough in the real world to support the editing of a post more then 24 hours old.

For sure the old system was very convenient but masquerading that convenience as a tool of importance is laughable.

That's an opinion I find laughable.

This point wouldn't need discussion if it were not for certain abuses of the system. This is another example of childishness ruining things for the rest of us.

I agree. The only instance I could see going back and editing a post would be an "OP" post as it pertains to questions asked and answered. Also OP posts in polls and clubhouses. Everything else a 24 hour window is fine.
If you think that 24 hour window is too short MAYBE you should think before you post. Less to edit that way.

That's an opinion I find laughable.

What exactly did he say that was childish? Seems like you are digging at him for personal reasons and not factual ones. I hate to break it to you but Solaris is an OG on TPU before a lot of these new wave guys were on here. The same could argue that anyone joined after 2010 is ruining TPU lol. I mean your statement is that random.

That's where you've gone wrong, because you've made assumptions. Just because you can't imagine a reason to edit a post more than 24 hours old is simply a statement of the limitations of your own imagination and it's quite a laughable claim in itself. I've had good reason to edit posts that are several years old for threads that are still going and I don't appreciate the inconvenience of having to ask to edit my own damned post just for the occasional convenience of the admins/mods if - big if, a member goes rogue.

Yup, nerd alright. :D:rockout:

My response to Solaris applies to yourself too, really. Not really any other way I can put it. If you don't agree, we'll have to agree to disagree, I guess.

And perhaps you should review the reasoning's that were stated when I brought this subject up. Yes, "think before you post" is good advice.

First, are you saying that elitism is a thing on TPU? I think W1zzard would have a problem with that statement. And I don't care who was here first. A nonsense statement is a nonsense statement regardless of the seniority of the person issuing said statement. Second, you sir are being as much of a problem in this instance as you claim latecomers are. Time for a mirror again Mr MailMan? Third, it seems you have missed the blatent subtly of my response.

This matter was discussed and valid points for the limitation given. @W1zzard effectively ended the discussion with his input and instruction. The matter is closed folks.

You said his idea was part of the problem. I was simply stating its a two way street. Some think its the new comers that are the issue. I personally don't really have a horse in this race BUT I do see a correlation between the new members and a shift in the forums dynamic. See some members have been here a long time. See Qubits response above? It was polite and unassuming. If you've been here long enough you would know Qubit and I mix like oil and water yet he didn't assume I was personally digging at him. This is old TPU in action. Your response was a direct attack. This is new TPU. So who is part of the problem again?

Also feel free to bring in W1zz. I have gotten an infraction by every single mod on TPU except Bta. W1zz knows me well and he also knows I have the good of the forum in mind. Always. Your little bully tactics don't work here.

No, I said his notion was laughable.
Some think its the new comers that are the issue. I personally don't really have a horse in this race BUT I do see a correlation between the new members and a shift in the forums dynamic.
And as displayed in the past few posts, clearly the problem isn't just with newcomers. (Just an FYI, someone who has been someplace for 5 years is never a newcomer, unless you're from planet Melnix.)
If you've been here long enough you would know Qubit and I mix like oil and water
You assume that such a dynamic is relevant here. It is not.
Your response was a direct attack.
Solaris17's statement was a direct jab at Qubit's perspective and indirectly mine. My response was a likewise jab in return. Your interpretation of it being an "attack" is an over-reaction.
So who is part of the problem again?
Again, look in a mirror. This is exactly the kind of thing I was referring to as "childishness" above. Chill out and let it go.
Your little bully tactics don't work here.

There was not a single jab by Solaris in his post. You straight up snowflaked on him. THIS is the problem with TPU. People going personal and mean. Joking personal has always been a staple of this forum. Being a straight up dick is a new thing and THIS is what is killing the forum. So yeah we are done. I hardly post anymore due to it but, maybe the forum needs more Mailman to call out the BS.

Well put.

I mean imagination or not this is a forum not an IRC channel. Of course you should already know I was here when we didn’t have such limitations, and I will go out on a board (assuming) and say that you also know I have to abide by the 24hr limit as well.

You know I don’t make rules right? Just making sure we just don’t agree.

I do like a short edit "grace period" ability so we can go back and fix typos and such. But generally, I don't think we should be able to go back days later and edit content - especially if new replies have been posted. The reason is simply because subscribers to that thread do not get notice of edits. So edits, important or not, may not get noticed.

Now if the forum would send email notices saying a post was edited in a thread I am following, then I would be okay with that.

My personal preference is, if there are no replies, the last poster should be able to edit his last post. But as soon as a new reply is added to the thread, edits will no longer be allowed (without mod/admin intervention) and a new reply will need to be added. In that way, subscribers will get notice of the new/corrected content.

I agree with everything you wrote with the small exception of what i highlighted: i figure a 24 hour period for the situations it refers to is appropriate.

EDIT

That said, there are cases, and then there are cases. For example:

It doesn't make much sense to be able to edit a post that was posted 4 hours ago when there have been ... say ... 40 replies already since the time it was posted.
