Another bone head moment for me was seeing the little switch on the back of a PSU that changes input from 110V to 220V and letting curiosity kick in before my brain could.
Yep Computer was on, and a loud bang and a few sparks later the PSU was dead.
That was a life lesson, I never even thought about doing that again.

I've always wanted to do that. Is that all that happens, it blows itself?

I mean what did you want it to do? Shoot electricity out like a Tesla coil? Shock your gear?

I guess it depends on which direction one is switching to. If you're on 230v and drop it down, I'd expect the system to just sputter. From 110v up? I'd expect a few things to fry with the PSU, not just the PSU itself.

In the U.S. where you are on 110V I wouldn't expect much to happen, but here in Aus. we're on 240V so switching down to 110V basically doubled the voltage it was meant to be getting.
Also it was a friends computer I was playing with at the time so needless to say I wasn't allowed to touch it after, not even to inspect the damage.
Hey, if you want to try it, at least video the event and wear brown undies while you're at it ;)

The thing is, no matter what you're switching from, the frequency is different. That will fry components faster than current of voltage will.

A brown out condition, going from 230/240v to 110/120v will cause little damage, if any, regardless of the hz rate.
Power companys tend to cut the power if the brown out exceeds 10% to 15%

I haven't tried it, but telling the components to expect 110V and then sending them 220V, could result in "surprised" components.
On the other hand, there's all sorts of clever designs out there, so the above is not necessarily a given.

Edit: I would also like to take this opportunity to thank @Hotobu for starting a thread that 3 pages later hasn't turned into a flame war :toast:

I did this exact same thing a couple of weeks ago and I'm supposed to be a PC tech, although after this episode I began to question whether I was in the right line of work.
A customer had bought a new Dell Inspiron 3668 in the US and managed to get it through customs here in Buenos Aires, which made her even more anxious to see it come to life and so asked me to set it up for her.
I've become so used to auto-switching PSUs that i didn't notice the little red switch at the back which was set to 110v, resulting in sparks, a lot of smoke and plenty of cursing.
I felt a complete knob yet luckily was able to get the PSU repaired as only the voltage regulator and some diodes were damaged and it was a huge relief to find that the rest of the brand new PC hadn't been affected at all.
Lesson learned.

It counts even more actually, for the embarrassment factor, especially with the customer breathing down my neck at the time.

....very first pc upgrade on a store bought pc. I added a second hard drive and was reinstalling either windows Xp or vista. I was playing around with the bios settings and heard raid 0 makes pc's run faster, so i enabled it. No true understanding of what raid is. So i installed windows and boom it does make it faster. Still saw multiple hdd under my pc so no concerns there. My wifes pc hdd dies. So no prob I've got 2 in mine so I pull one format and reinstall the os in my wifes pc... it works fine. Go back and turn mine on and.....what????? :nutkick::shadedshu::banghead:

My first own PC that I used for gaming had some FX 5200 AGP card - bleh. It let me play games, but not to the level I wanted. Not having learned much about computers yet and how to read into the hardware, I picked up what I thought was a massive upgrade....FX 5500 (you know, larger number means better! Yeah me, got a new GPU!). I installed it, installed the driver for it, load up the leaked Doom 3 demo I had and no performance difference. I tried out some other games, no change and I honestly think some of them ran a little worse than before. Anyway.....live and learn.

I keep the FX 5500 for a little bit and finally decide to upgrade my awesome AGP graphic capable system to something with some proper umph. I found the 7800 GS had just come out so I picked one up. Would have worked great if I actually knew what kind of PSU I had in that computer because all my system did was beep at me when I tried to power it on. I spent about 30 minutes dinking around with the computer, disconnecting and reconnecting all the cables and reseating the GPU....nothing worked. In my great wisdom I finally read upon the box that the 7800 GS says it required 400W to work. I work the PSU out of the case and find that it's 300W - PSU isn't enough to properly power the system. Thankfully just down the road from my work was a PC repair shop. I stopped in there and picked up a 450W PSU, got home, installed it and everything worked!

Here you think I would have finally learned to make sure I read the boxes of computer related stuff before buying so I could make sure I could run whatever it was I bought.....but no, I let one more reading failure get me again a short time later. It was the only game that I pre-ordered on any system and back when buying PC games from GameStop was still an "in thing" to do. I pre-ordered Advent Rising (which I think is an awesome game still) for my computer. I was so excited when it came in that I raced home to install it. I insert the disc into the CD-ROM and the disc isn't being detected....WTF? Pull the disc out, make sure it doesn't have any damage on it and gently wiped it off, put the disc back in, but still it won't be detected! Son of a......okay, I guess I pack the game back up and see about returning it. As I put the game disc and manual back into the box I notice on the box, in the lower left corner it clearly marked with:
tempsnip.png

Stupid me! My computer only has a CD-ROM. All my other games prior to this one game are on CDs. This was my first game that came on a DVD. I ended up picking up an exterior DVD-ROM drive from CompUSA the next day on my lunch break.

Okay, not really bonehead mistakes that broke anything, but I think they're kind of funny. I now make sure I read carefully the requirements of any game/software/hardware when it comes to going into my systems.

I was referring to a brown-out local to the PC itself from being undervolted when switching the voltage on the PSU.

@Splinterdog nice bike, looks a lot like my old Kawasaki ZL I have rusting in the garage.
Not really computer tech related but a motorbike is tech of sorts, and it definitely was a bonehead moment of mine....
I was riding along a beachside road perving enjoying the scenery when I failed to see a slight bend in the road and went arse over tits after hitting the kerb and going over a street sign which coincidently indicated the slight bend  long story short, the bike ended up with bent forks and my left leg got a deep gash in it from going over the sign and slashing on it.
I ended up being collected by an ambulance and a local was nice enough to keep my bike in his driveway until I came out of hospital a few days later.

@Caring1 It's actually a Jawa 350 (4 stroke) assembled locally with Chinese components. Solid as a rock and easy to maintain myself. Looks good too.

I'm gonna necro this because of something else I did that was stupid.

I was an early Ryzen adopter, so this was back when X730 was having some serious memory compatibility issues. I was having troubles of my own, so I set my 3200 MHz memory to 2133 in order to get it to act right... Except I forgot I did this... OVER A YEAR AGO! All this time I've been running with underclocked memory. Luckily it didn't cause me too many issues since pretty much every game I play maxed out my framerates, but... well.. yeah.

That's why you forgot about it, it didn't affect your system performance to any high degree. Betting your system feels snappier now that it's set correctly, yes?

Actually it does. I was wondering why my FPS was so low in the GTA 5 benchmark. The frame timings were bad, and it was dipping into the 30s at some points. I figured maybe a RAM overclock could fix it and I was right... just not the way I thought I'd be. Now it's a rock solid (+/- 3) 60 fps.

Benchmark Scores world record for most amount of times machine has pissed me off ....
Recently tried to squeeze that bit more out my faithful 2500k before retirement that had sat happy at a very modest 4.2ghz most of its life in a somewhat iffy p67 Pro board. Set bios to 4.4ghz and voltage offset slightly higher but my motherboard decided to not play ball, shot voltage straight upto 1.56 volts on stress test after boot and blew itself instantly. Now doesn't boot to bios, only fans spin and no beep when rams removed etc ... So now I don't have a system and not quite enough yet to build new... all for a measly 200mhz

For something more on the lighter side of things...

Yesterday I had a serious brainfart when I didn't realize that I tweaked a setting on my TV which prevented me from seeing most Windows screens past my mobo's splash screen. Because I thought this was a Windows error I ended up opening up my computer, unplugging hard drives, repairing the Windows startup, downloading and then reinstalling Windows at least 5 times, calling MS tech support, restarting dozens of times, cursing loudly, and questioning my existence (not necessarily in that order) and wasted about 5 hours of my life. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have done something stupid like this. Anyone else have a story to share about a boneheaded tech moment?

I think its pretty hard to top your example. 'Calling MS tech support'... I mean that is taking things pretty damn far and underlines you were pretty damn desperate... Its that last resort that never really amounts to anything anyway :D
