Possible Intel New Generation Support

I was busy looking for updates for my system, as I often do when I am a bit bored. I came across an interesting one for the bios. I have no intention on updating my bios at this time. This update however, gave me pause to think. At first I thought it had to do with recent release of the Pentium Gold CPU. After checking the compatibility table, I found those cpu are covered with the first public bios for my motherboard. Now I think my MSI z370 sli plus mb may very well support the 9000 series, including the 8 core. Pretty exciting to think this even though I have no idea if it is true. An exclamation point, really?

I thought XEON used different boards than Z370, but hmm you might be right. Xeon is only for workloads, it won't translate well to gaming correct?

Of course it will support 9th gen, they're basically rebrands with higher clocks, like Ryzen 2 or Kaby Lake.

edit:Ryzen 2 is actually new process,forgot about it, probably cause it still feels like a vey minor frequency bump (4Ghz max. oc on 1st gen vs 4.2GHz on 2nd gen) is all they achieved.

Not sure you can say of course here. After all, both the 6th and 7th gen use an 1151 socket, yet Intel chose to not make 8th gen cpu compatible with either the z170 or z270 chipset.

I am making this conjecture on a simple exclamation point. A slim bit of evidence meant to excite. It does seem MSI wants to get us hyped about something and just can't say.

Intel allowed 7th gen and 6th gen on the same boards cause they were the same cpus, only refreshed. As soon as 8th gen launched with more cores, they moved to z370 but didn't allow them on z170/z270
What makes you think that there is going to be an 8 core 1151 cpu and it is not reserved for z390,which it will certainly be if it really launches. Otherwise, z370 will support only refreshes, same cpus with slight frequency increase, just like skylake/kaby or haswell/devil's canyon.

Oh, and have fun with your antique too, at 5.0GHz it's slower than my 5775c running 4300MHz with L4 at 2GHz

I may be wrong but all evidence points to that. Intel doesn't allow core count increase on older mobos, they didn't with coffee lake. Hence the introduction of z390. They could've allowed 4c i3's on b250, but they probably saw it as a chance to push b360.

You do know that people have successfully modded Z170 boards and 8th Gen CPUs to work together, right?

There's no architectural reason Intel couldn't have allowed board vendors to provide BIOS updates for Z170 and Z270 boards that would have allowed Coffee Lake compatibility.

Intel did claim that "power requirements" forced the change, but even if there's a grain of truth to that, most mid/high end boards have VRMs that are huge overkill anyway, and would have easily powered the CPUs at stock clocks - Potentially even with plenty of headroom left for OC, depending on the board.

No different than Nvidia, once you become king of something its hard to keep caring, therein lies the beauty of the double edged sword of the free markets.

Most probably untrue. The BIOS contains the CPUID for the alleged 8 core CFL8+2, 906ec. I'd say it's pretty safe to expect 8 core CPUs on Z370. They can make a 5.0GHz single core turbo like 8086K, 4.3GHz 6 core like 8700K, 8 core 4GHz? 3.7GHz? and they should have a CPU that looks good for marketing and beats the 2700x in probably every application.

Problem is, how much will they ask for it? Make it a Core i9 and 600-800USD and they will lose so many potential customers, that I expect they thought of when extending Z370's life. Make it a 375 Core i7 and you will sell lots. I still won't buy one, no point for me, the 8700K should last be 3 years easily.
