AMD Cuts Prices of First Gen Ryzen Threadripper Processors

With the arrival of its 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper HEDT processors, AMD cut prices of the socket-compatible first-generation parts. A highlight of this move is the availability of the 12-core/24-thread Threadripper 1920X at $399. This chip trades blows with the Core i9-7900X in multi-threaded tasks, and considering stores are still listing Intel's 6-core/12-thread Core i7-7800X at $390 and the 8-core/16-thread i7-7820X at $469, could make for a better alternative, with more PCIe lanes. The 8-core/16-thread Threadripper 1900X is now down to $299, or less than the SEP price of the Ryzen 7 2700X. The 1900X still gives you 64-lane PCIe and quad-channel memory.

This doesn't look good, an $800 part cut to $400 after 1 year. Some might say this is AMD's way of giving back to their customers, but I think they're cutting their losses. The sTR4 boards are too high ($300-$600), 4 sticks of DDR4 3200 will cost almost another $400. This is just too much for the average AMD customer, who are used to $100 boards and $50 RAM. A half price CPU is still not cheap enough to entice many to this expensive platform.

The average customer won't need 12 cores for a loooong time and any Intel HEDT route has the exact same price issues on all other components ON TOP of the CPU. I think this loss is a calculated one and a logical one. AMD needs mind- and marketshare before anything else and unsold chips are dead weight anyway. To get back to the McDrive comment, these TR chips are as common as flipped burgers (its just Ryzen x Ryzen); the real money is made on EPYC and to get that going, you just need more wafers.

I remember when Intel moved 'mainstream' core counts into the HEDT line up for the bottom end and it had good reason: some workstations are fine with just the added lanes and RAM options. What you get here with TR is quite the same, and some extra cores on top, almost for free.

Most of the money that you pay for a AMD CPU probably goes to R&D and staff. Those are constant expenses that AMD can't afford to cut, not against Intel. It's not just the cost of the materials and fab hours.

The sTR4 socket isn't for the mainstream. Its for the enthusiasts. If you want a $100 CPU and $50 RAM.. look at their entry-mainstream.. Socket AM4.

That's baloney. Microcenter had a hard time keeping them in stock for many months. And obviously HEDT doesn't sell like ordinary desktop parts. Old parts have to be flushed.

I always got what the different segments were.

I bought a 1900X and the Gigabyte Gaming 7 X399 board for my daily rig. I got the 1900X cause it was an entry level. Enough to get me into the HEDT platform till Zen2 comes out. (7nm) (or if they don't plan on doing 7nm for my board... I'll do a 2950X later.

Please note- I got the 1900X for $289 shipped... and the board for $330. RAM was Samsung B-Die TridentZ RGB 14C 32GB for $380.

I think you missed the recent news of How 1920X was number 1 selling CPU on Amazon during firesale. In HEDT market AMD is out gunning Intel by 10:1 ratio.

1800X was $449, but discontinued now.
Around $460 for the 1900X
$600AU for the 1920X
$1,129 for the 1950X

Well amd could afford to make one chip.
They did and that is the reason why they probably end up being that cheap cause there is one mask, one design, one manu. line etc..

It's not like they're bad or anything.
They're clearing inventory which is all and I'd love one of these for a server but unfortunately I have to buy a new car
