GOG's Back to School Sale is Live, Features 500+ DRM-Free Game Titles

The whole concept of a Back to School game sale is confusing to many, given kids have less free time with school coursework to handle. Perhaps it is targeted more to parents, who have some time to spare now and also appreciate a good sale that brings monetary savings for games in general. GOG.com (formerly Good Old Games) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of CD Projekt and aims to offer a DRM-free platform for PC gaming. The week-long sale ends 10 pm UTC on September 10 and lists over 500 games discounted by up to 90% on some titles. These also include flash deals (remember those, Steam?) as well as new additions to GOG Connect that offers DRM-free versions of games one may have purchased on Steam before.

Current flash deals as of the time of writing include Star Trek Starfleet Academy for $4.99, The Dwarves for $9.99, This Is The Police for $3.79, Prince of Persian: The Sands of Time for $2.49, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon for $2.49, and Shadowrun Dragonfall Director's Cut for $2.29. Well, not on sale but $9.99 is not bad. Of course, you could keep checking back during the sale, it may end up 50 to 60% off.

I get the impression the publisher of Gothic isn't participating. Maybe it was added recently so they're not interested in discounting it yet.

Sadly, not much added for me (Shadowrun and "King of Dragon Pass".. a light throwaway title I haven't played yet).

That said, I actually have a lot of the games that are on sale here.. just not on GOG.

The Saboteur, one of my favorite games.
If you like games like GTA and Assassin's Creed and a feeling of Mafia, this game kind of does a good mix of those three. You should check it out.

They're the developers of Elex - that's on sale on GoG. Then again THQ Nordic is the publisher of the game.....other THQ Nordic games are discounted, it just seems more so that Piranha Bytes games are specifically not discounted.....Anyway, I'm tempted to pick up a copy of Elex since I really, really enjoyed Gothic and Gothic II (Gothic III was okay once you got all the official and unofficial patches to the game).

Saboteur was a very expensive game to produce and it didn't sell well so no sequel. Yeah, it's a fantastic game.

Gothic, when I first played it, the controls felt wonky (not what I was used to using) and the combat felt about the same. I allowed myself time to get to used to it and pretty soon I was having a blast. It's not a game you just charge through, you need to take your time to learn combat movement, when to strike and so on. It can be pretty punishing if you're just trying to get through the game as fast as you can.

Gothic II (and the expansion - sadly, I never did play it) were about just as good as the first.

Gothic III - felt horribly rushed. Much larger world than the other two. If you track down all the patches (official and unofficial) it'll make a difference in how you perceive the overall game. I didn't feel that the story was as good as the first two and I probably only made it about half way through the game before I finally stopped playing. I still have my physical copy of it, I should try it out again.

Gothic III expansion (Forsaken Gods) I hear was crap. I have an unopened copy of it. I found it for cheap back in the day when GameStop actually sold PC games without opening the boxes to prevent theft and I grabbed a copy of it. I never played the expansion it since I didn't complete the actual game.

Arcania: Gothic IV - just don't. Do yourself a favor and don't. For the love of everything that was great about Gothic 1, 2, 3 and even 3's crappy expansion, do not play this game.
