It was less than a month ago that we reported on GOG.com's Back to School game sale event, and today we got wind of an even larger one. Indeed, GOG.com (previously Good Old Games) is 10 today, and decided it was as good a time as any to celebrate the anniversary with us. First up, the entire website has received a visual makeover which offers a new color palette and also some user experience improvements as it pertains to the game collections and menus.

More important to you, I presume, is the free game(s) available via a vote. As of now, visitors can vote between Shadow Warrior 2, Superhot, and Firewatch for another ~36 hours as of this posting following which the winning game will be available for free for the next 48 hours after voting ends. There are also many, many other games on sale on the website now, and GOG.com has also added in support for their media partners to curate a list of recommended games including Eurogamer, PC Gamer, and GameSpot- a move that reminds us of Steam's own Curator system for game recommendations. The page also now includes a history section showing the website's humble beginnings to what is today the leading store front for DRM-free games. Go ahead and see if you find something you like today!

Shadow warrior 2 is a hell of a game to get free. That would get my vote.

The other day I had some noob tell me CDP and EA weren't that different.

Just the size of the whole company, yearly revenue, games' quality, no DRM... Yep, no difference at all.

While I had some issues with CDP back in the day (when we bought boxed games :) ), cause they polish-dubbed a lot of games without giving the option to play with the original language, gotta love them for creating GOG, especially for all those lost classics from the '90s. And the games are mine, not like on steam/uplay/origin etc...

I love old-school FPS games. Simple gameplay, fun maps and simple UIs.

Knowing this, and being a stickler for memories of when I was a young gamer, I bought Shadow Warrior 2 upon release.

Within the first 10-15 minutes of gameplay, I was confronted with what's in the screenshots below.

What the hell have they done? I mean, check out the third screenshot! They've turned it into a game for RPG nerds.

I then went into the control settings and saw: Healing Flame, Vanish, Chi-Blast, Grip of Darkness, Shadow Fury etc.

It's just too complicated now.

Such a shame that they had to ruin such a fun, simple series.

I actually much prefer Duke Nukem Forever due to its simplicity and fun level design. Fun multiplayer, too.

Ill agree right away this is not 'Duke Nukem' simple, but if you play more of it, you will realize that all those menus represent are layers 'on top of' the simple FPS experience. You can play through the entire game just using the pickups you find and not diving into the numbers game at all. OK you get to rank up some skills, but its not ever really complicated in any way. Descriptions are straightforward.

Those additional layers of gameplay and min-maxing are awesome because the game offers a 'true endgame' as well. Not just New Game +, but Diablo-style ARPG progression where things keep scaling. And you can get to pretty sick numbers at that point, including real changes in the gameplay. Different damage types and all those other aspects suddenly start to actually matter. There is even a special currency and a weapon upgrade system that starts to shine only when you've reached the highest difficulty.

So rather than 'ruining it', they added things to it while preserving the core gameplay.

In other words, you need to give SW2 another shot ;)
