ZOTAC Intros GeForce GTX 1060 6GB G5X Destroyer Graphics Card

ZOTAC began rolling out its first refreshed GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB graphics cards that feature the more advanced GDDR5X memory, dubbed GTX 1060 6 GB G5X Destroyer. Since NVIDIA is carving out this RX 590-rivaling SKU from the larger GP104 silicon, ZOTAC appears to be using the same PCB as its GTX 1080 Mini, with 2/8 memory traces blanked out. The GP104 silicon is configured with the same 1,280 CUDA cores, 80 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and 192-bit wide memory interface as the GP106-based original, but with 6 GB of GDDR5X memory, albeit clocked at the same 8 GHz.

The card sticks to NVIDIA reference clock speeds of 1506 MHz core, 1708 MHz GPU Boost, and 8.00 GHz memory clock, although the 10 Gbps-rated GDDR5X memory chips could come with vast overclocking headroom. The card draws power from a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. Display outputs include three DisplayPorts, and one each HDMI and DVI-D. Although the card physically features SLI-HB fingers, ZOTAC clarifies that SLI is not supported for this SKU.

why paying 600+ bucks for 2 overpriced gtx 1060
or even 300+ bucks for another card if you already have one when you could get the rtx 2070 or even the gtx 1080 for around 550 bucks and still outperform the sli cards in most games?

Memory bandwidth is all that matters, not the memory type or anything.
This thing will perform exactly the same as a regular GTX 1060.
These are not designed to compete with the RX 590.

If Nvidia just added SLi to the normal GTX 1060 range, everyone who bought one already would have a hissy fit. Will have to wait for the reviews to come out and see how well these cards scale in SLi.

If the SLI fingers are electrically wired to the GPU, I think by reflashing it with a 1080 vBIOS, SLI support may work. I say 1080 because it’s the only other GP104 graphics card that has GDDR5X on desktop, so it’s the most similar to the GTX 1060X (1060 with GDDR5X).

In addition, only overclockers would be able to see the difference. Spec for spec, normal consumers that don’t overclock (a fair majority of the entire gaming community) would see the RX 590 as a better option because it by default comes with higher clocks. The GTX 1060X does not come with higher clocks by default, just different ram speeds. The only difference MAY be the memory voltage, and I’m sure 99% of people deciding on which to buy don’t care about the voltage difference. Having GDDR5X over GDDR5 results in zero difference in performance at the same speed. Temperatures don’t make a big enough difference. Also it’s funny how nvidia made a 9GBps version with GDDR5, and only 8GBps with GDDR5X...

A GTX 1060 is ~200-220$ where I'm from. That is of course not counting old stock or models with overkill cooling and silly factory OC that cost as much as a 1070ti.

Judging by shader count, you should be right. 2x1280 cuda cores will probably perform as well or worse then a GTX 1080. The only real option for mid end multi-gpu is a pair of RX 580 cards, and while they do perform on par with a 1080 / vega64, driver support and cost keeps them from being a solution worth considering.

What is considering is a pair of cheap RX570's in crossfire. A pair can be had for as low as 300-320$ where I'm from, while a GTX 1080 costs over 520$.

Buyers are quite dumb too. Most people hear that Nvidia produces the strongest VGA cards and automatically assume that all the cards from Nvidia are the best buys in their price segment.

I think Nvidia just never wanted to provide a better price/perf option that would end-up infringing on the next generation 2060. I see this is their "rock and a hard place" issue; it's why if they made anything like 1070's they'd be taking sale from the next 2060 or even pealing off RTX 2070 buyers. Same with 1080's, although those can be made into Quadro P5000 or Tesla P4. I think they'd see it okay to make some 1070Ti (anything that has at least 152 TMU's but not the full 160TMU's, as long as they hold that price to close to the $400 MSRP.

Multi-GPU performace is not that bleak. I previously tested a couple of GTX 1070's in SLi and they scaled up to 172% - and back in 2015? I had a dual R9 280x setup, and it would scale up to a whopping 185% in some games and benchmars (and -10% in others like Assasin's Creed Black Flag).

Dunno how much the new 1060 will cost. I suppose it will be a touch more expensive then the 590x.

well I guess you are right to some extent because that 172% only applies to a few games. Only half of the games scale above 150%
