Wal-Mart To Sell 300$ PC With OpenOffice

Wal-Mart Inc. opened its campaign for the back-to-school PC sales season on Wednesday by introducing a 298$ desktop from Everex which combines three top characteristics, an open-source software, a power-efficient processor, and a lack of bloatware. The Monitor-Less Everex Impact GC3502 runs on a energy saving 1.5GHz C7-D processor from Via Technologies and Includes Microsoft Windows Vista along with OpenOffice.org 2.2 version of word processing and spreadsheet tools.
With this bundle Everex hopes to attract buyers by avoiding the free "trial software" that annoys many users, according to Eugene Chang, a product manager at Everex, of Fremont, California. Dell did a similar thing back in July when it withheld bloatware from its new Vostro line of PCs.
"It's not surprising that Wal-Mart, of all retailers, will sell the $298 Everex desktop; it's a good marriage with their biggest audience-- budget buyers but it has a couple of problems, one is that it uses a Via processor, which is almost unknown to U.S. consumers. And it runs at just 1.5 GHz, so it's unknown how it will handle Microsoft Vista ,and also running OpenOffice is kind of a unique tactic. It's anti-Microsoft, since Microsoft obviously owns the market for productivity software. So users may have some concerns about compatibility." said Toni DuBoise, a senior analyst with Current Analysis West.

Right.

i don't see how its necessarily anti-microsoft going to an opensource office software. afterall, they are trying to keep costs down. including microsoft office would for sure increased the price.

That and Vista may not get along to well. Single core at 1.5 ghz and 400mhz fsb? That's not going to like Vista at all, also the 1gb of ram is barely enough to run word processing and music in the background....break out the photoshop and the thing will defiantly crash....I would've just gone with Ubuntu....

Software Windows Server 2003 R2 as a Workstation now migrated to W10 with regrets.
Don't be so hard. The VIA C7 and 1GB is actually a great spec for an internet or simple applications machine.

It wont run any 3D games, but that's not the target market.

This is perfect for girls-at-college. Chat rooms and email. Perfect.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
Dump the Vista and get a Linux distro, subtract $50 off each and it would be a good low budget machine.

if they had Bundled it with Xp home it would be a decent low power system but no doubt i has been designed to include value added extras. Has anyone else noticed that there isnt one mention of Vista certification on the Everex Website.

no matter how "cheap" that "thing" is i wouldn't even bother to waste my money on it ill be going to 10th grade and i just wouldn't want it to store anything that if it crashes ill loose then have to do it over again (e.g. reports, documentation, info. for a project, etc.) id rather spend that money on parts to build my own thats just a little bit more stable and a little less " wow, is it suppose to be smoking like that" bottom line i wouldn't waste my money on it!

one positive for this system is it should run on a 9 volt battery long enough to check your emails so i guess it isn't all bad.

Well it looks to handle school basics with aplomb. I mean, its obviously intended for that. Though I recommend they fix the ram in their to make Vista at least useable. I would have recommended Ubuntu or something to go along with openoffice.
