I finally have an excuse to own Ryzen.

A while ago I was building lego space ships in Lego Digital Designer, and I made some cool designs for my Sci-Fi Role Play game i used to play with a friend.

Today I downloaded this awesome program and it can Import LDD Files! My Space ships will live again, I thought! But wait, where does Ryzen come into this?

Omg. It gets even better. The Stud.io program has a built in Photorealistic renderer for lego models! I am so excited and happy. I loaded up the renderer and watched as my 2700X worked full throttle on all 16 threads for 10 minutes to render my "Endeavour-class Battlecruiser" model.

JPEG_20190223_153044.jpg

And here is the finished image. I am so happy with it, now I can create my wildest ideas in lego and produce awesome images of them like never before. Sorry I'm just so pleased with this.

So now I can justify having a 2700X over an 8600K without just saying its based on principle xD - I can say, legitimately, because a hobby of mine is rendering cool space ships. And I think the 2700X might have an edge here. :3

I will do more soon :D poor 2700X going to have its work cut out, lol.

Sci-fi RPG eh? I only ever knew Traveller and it's spin-off 2300AD. But that was the late eighties. We're talking paper and dice RPG?

Nice ship but I've found her weak spot. Fly a small enough fighter in a direct line to her forward nacelle and those laser turrets will have a blind spot. I use an advanced chaff system for all anti-matter missiles but they're generally banned across the galaxy. And my chaff is cat food. You are impotent in the feline fog.

Now your base are belong to us!

We used to meet up and role play with the lego models but most of it was just talking and occasionally some space battles (I was like 15) xD We carried it on for a few years over Skype and then Discord. I've just asked him if he wants to play again now we can recreate our ships in the renderer :O

The Endeavour uses a Point-Defence system of small rotary mass drivers and laser interceptors dotted around the hull on weak spots, but almost always accompanied by a pair of lighter cruisers for fighter defence (and their own escort wings). :D !

Biggest model i ever made was the Volcyon Conglomerate's Mammoth mobile Factory/Trading Post/Transport/Space Station/Battleship. over 30,000 bricks xD (but a lot of the design is modular lol).

Yeah it might be worth it to wait. But that said, I only recently (a month or so ago) got my 2700X knowing full well the Zen2 is coming middle of the year, but I buy and sell parts so often I will 100% get a Zen 2 also :D i am thinking I might wait for a 12 core on AM4 if i'm planning to do this rendering quite often. I want to slap the sample count and resolution to max :O

What? No D20?

As for Rolemaster - we talking Iron Crown Enterprises (ICE)? As in MERP?

Oh my, my. Cans of cola, slices of Pizza and getting trashed by trolls in Moria. That was the best part of the end of the 80's.

Curious about this as well? I would guess 50% faster with the Ryzen?

Exactly.

You made the purchase knowing full well in most cases it wouldnt be utilized, but certainly was a huge upgrade regardless. :)

Oh i don't actually own an 8600K haha, I just mean because when I say I wanted to spend £300 on a CPU and all I do is play games everyone seems to say I would've been better served with an 8600K. Which is technically true as all I play is Warframe and it uses 4 threads at most. But I always just loved Ryzen. Like, AMD is the underdog so there is that appeal. And also because I don't really feel like 6 / 6 is worth paying £260 for, in 2019. That's just me. But as for the title of the post I can finally have an actual valid reason for choosing 2700X over 8600K. (I also consider more future proof platform and significantly better multi-threaded performance for only a slight reduction in gaming performance to be valid but other people don't agree).

If you want to load up all your threads... have you considered joining our WCG team? Ryzen (or better yet, Threadripper) is kicking serious ass here. It's true that Intel still holds the performance crown, if you're willing to pay... but AMD really shines in price/performance while not being too far behind Intel, or even surpassing Intel in heavily threaded situations for the same price. There's a lot of us on the WCG team loving Ryzen right now for the performance it offers for the price.

If I wanted to, I could get a Ryzen 1700 right now, which is an 8/16 chip, for $170. On the other hand, the cheapest 8 core Intel is the $420 9700k, which doesn't even have Hyperthreading... the AMD chip literally costs less than half. While it's still going to be a full GHz or more slower, that kind of price is mighty attractive to somebody who isn't looking for top framerates in games, or somebody who is stuck working with software that is dependent on a fast single thread to perform well.

I must admit I do want one... but I have other responsibilities and must keep cash on hand for a rainy day, and God knows I've seen my share of those already... maybe when my loan is paid off around this time next year, but right now I just don't need it.

What is WCG? is it like Folding @ Home? :O I Oooooh that would give me an awesome excuse to build another pc with like, a 1700 like you said, but just for processing (at stock too for maximum power efficiency and stability). I would be very interested in joining! (And a good cause too :O ) !

Edit: omg i would buy this; https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Ryzen-1700-16-Core-3-7-GHz/dp/B06WP5YCX6?th=1

for my server (which runs our home security camera system, but would basically process all day long too (its 24/7). I'm goign to save for that 1700 now xD

yess i did play this for a good while but then they added a ton of new stuff and I sort of stopped playing :/ I still have it tho i might try it out again :D

Also:

I can strongly recommend going back into Space Engineers right about now.

They have streamlined their complete mess quite a bit, UI is revamped, functionality is pretty much done, and the new changelogs only contain minor / add on stuff. Also pistons are no longer a guarantee of total meltdown and you can mix small grids into your build much easier (I remember the huge hassle with ownership and what not you had to do back in the day for that).

It's not entirely correct to compare it to F@H, but not entirely wrong either. F@H specifically studies protein folding, which when gone wrong can cause cancers and a few other ailments (and these days most folks run it on the GPU), while WCG has a much wider scope and is run on the CPU only (save that one oddball beta task years ago that actually did use the GPU). Running WCG, I've seen everything from projects related to rice and clean energy to projects aimed at fighting cancer, AIDS and even ebola.
