Steam Users Review Metro Exodus Positively While Review Bombing the Epic Games Store

We reported earlier this month how Steam users were resorting to review bombing of the previous game entries in the Metro franchise, mostly driven by Deep Silver/Koch Media's decision to take Metro Exodus over to the Epic Games Store for a timed exclusive. 4A developers commented on how this could impact further game development on the PC platform, and that ended up being more kindling to the fire despite some language communication gaps in play. Metro Exodus has since launched, and has been getting reviews from the media and players alike, with the former mostly agreeing it is a good game, but not necessarily as good as the previous entries were. The latter, however, is where things got interesting- especially on Steam.

For those who were able to add the game to their Steam library before it got moved, and there are a lot of those too given Metro Exodus rose to the top spot of best selling titles once that news broke, the game appears to be more than satisfactory at first glance. While many were expecting users to review bomb the title negatively again, the current status of the game on Steam is "Very Positive" as far as user reviews go. Discussions have been mostly on point as well, until you dig deeper. The most helpful reviews, as rated by other Steam users, are really just a dig at the Epic Games Store, with language used that is less mature than the game rating itself. Newer reviews continue to do the same, so perhaps this was an attempt by many to appease the game publisher by leaving positive reviews of the game, but still making it more about the Epic Games store than the game itself. Not the best way to go about things, but it is still better than review bombing the game.

Okay, I understand the past rage against the publishers for doing things wrong, but this is getting more and more retarded.

Do we know if it was just Steam users that review-bombed the title, or just random people who didn’t like the idea of a timed exclusive? I’m sure many were one and the same, but it’s still an important distinction. With any site where reviews can be made without a verified purchase, pretty much anyone can trash a product for any reason. I know I don’t depend on user ratings like I used to, as even what looks like legitimate reviews are getting hard to trust. I wonder when (how?) these review systems will change, as they don’t seem to serve their purpose as intended.

You need to be a verified purchaser on Steam to leave a review, so those are all owners. Also, the Epic Games Store has no user review functionality at this point.

When you see almost exclusively positive reviews for "games" such as Life is Strange you'll know steam user reviews are worthless:)

That is a discussion for another day, but I see nothing wrong with Life is Strange counted as a game and would personally review it positively as well.

Life Is Strange may be my favorite game of all time (the series is also amongst the top of my list), sooooooo...

Just because you don't see the appeal doesn't mean that those who do play don't love it.

Though funny you should mention LiS as LiS2 was also review bombed because you can't buy the episodes individually. Though you couldn't do that with Before the Storm or the original LiS either so, yeah...

I partly get your point, but steam is so differentiated, you have the handle the things in their on place, and btw you pick a bad example :)

You cannot objectively review something like a game, or music, or a movie. It isn't as simple as installing a new video card or processor and running some benchmarks to measure the performance difference. I remember a game I liked which only got a 6/10 from some review... so I don't pay much attention to reviews of such things.

Clearly, they have hit the acceptance stage to where they understand now that you don't play Steam. You play Metro Exodus.

it would not surprise me if Steam did some botting help scores or even removed troll reviews.

Well, does anyone remember what happened to Steam reviews when they removed mod support from GTA V.. Maybe one or two gamer's whining doesn't matter, but many raindrops can cause a flood.

Of course it got positive reviews, since it's the best game series to exist so far. Even better than Final Fantasy, and I've been a FF fan for 20 years.

I think steam just paid money to the bots companies to do it.
On their side they don't need to pay anyone, they just generate those reviews in their DB.

I doubt Steam would do that. They would be knee deep in shit, if they would get caught. And the Internet detectives these days would easily expose something like that.

I don't think they have to. There's plenty of Steam fanboys to do it of their own free will in the name of Lord Gaben.

I wanted it on Steam as much as anybody else, but I'm not wasting my time writing fraudulent reviews that have less to do with the game itself and more to do with the publisher.

I agree. Thats why I "borrowed my friend`s laptop with installed game" as I refuse to install Epic store on my machine.
No hard feelings, will get the game later (when its released on steam) to have whole trilogy in one place.
Cheers!

there's a lot of things you can say about Metro Exodus, but it being boring? are you criminally insane?

No. Steam just completely removed a game because a dev had paid people write glowing reviews. Leave the tinfoil hat at home, please.
