@FYFI13 dun forget that it has a mid range, non K i5 chip installed. Of course I would have picked a more decent Z77 board & a K-series SKU if budget was not a limiting factor.

Rumors are all over the place, and not worth the time it takes to sort them.
Yet no one here can give me a link. ;)

My point is to question the "OC beast rumor" in the news article, I'm not asking how much it actually overclocks.

Yeah, you can't show me a rumor about Matisse being an OC beast. That's ok, because I've never seen one either as you know.

They are likely referring to this: https://www.techpowerup.com/255405/amd-ryzen-3000-zen-2-a-memory-oc-beast-ddr4-5000-possible. Not technically correct but it has the phrase OC Beast. No one really reads (guilty of it myself at times) anymore so that would be my guess as to where the oc beast reference came from.

Does that count?

Just fine if you understood the context it was said in.... thermals. :)

I've been over that here several times (was at the announcement where it was said and talked with Joe in person).

I mean, an overclocker's dream usually means you can overclock it. Overclocker's really only care about thermals....when they can overclock it.

Only the OP/news writer knows what "OC beast" means, because nobody else here seems to know. Maybe it was RAM.

So, did that satisfy?

And really, unless W1zzard is doing a special on something like the performance impact of Denuvo or the really occasional oddity from someone else, the news section is really just a slightly techy version of the National Enquirer or Perez Hilton. It's why people just can't turn away!

As Mats have already touched upon, expecting any "OC beast" is probably unrealistic, the times of great OC potential is surely gone, and new generations from both AMD and Intel is likely to have little OC potential going forward. And if there are any models with great potential, those would be exceptions rather than the norm. Overclocking at this point requires extreme cooling for marginal gains, and is no longer "worth it" for most enthusiasts.

Even though the total power consumption have increased a bit for CPUs in the past few years, that's not the biggest problem. The big problem is the thermal density, which is explained a bit in this video. It's really not that hard to cool the HEDT CPUs which approaches 200W at stock, but the i9-9900K at "95W" quickly gets into throttling territory, as a CPU with higher thermal density needs a much more overkill cooler than a CPU with higher total consumption but lower thermal density. This problem will only increase with node shrinks as long as the shrink factor is higher than the reduction in power consumption. AMD's strategy of putting chiplets "far apart" may help a little bit, but we'll see how much fairly soon.

I still would remind people to manage their expectations. At this point it seems like "most" are expecting a 16-core at ~5 GHz, with great OC potential on top of that, ~15-20% IPC gains, very low price, low TDP, and memory speeds of 4-5 GHz. How realistic is all of this?

Even if it could be- better for all of us that it not gonna be that good- or we gonna pay Extra for such chip and the prices AMD CPU's prices will double, Lets be happy if the just gonna match 9900K at lower price:).

good wordsmithing. :p

Again, it was in the context of thermals...the oc headroom...not clockpseeds.

I understand and your point taken. I just don't think you can put any context around overclocker's dream when referencing Fiji. Most GPUs that don't have a cooler made from cardboard and mashed potatoes as thermal paste have sufficient cooling to go 'above' design specs.

Fury....was....just not capable. That verbal poo didn't do them any favors in the hearts and minds category.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
I mean it was marketing, but most were thinking it had to do with clocks when he was referencing thermal headroom on the cooler. Sure, some have headroom...but this was a watercooler/AIO and overall cooled it well (if I am remembering the card right anyway, LOL).

IMO there is no point in low end parts , just transferring the CPU around to get the I/O from GF and CPU chiplet from TSMC is too much for such cheap low end parts.
They still got Ryzen 1000/2000 around.
This is why I think there will be no 8C/16T availible for many months, because if they price it $299 -what they gonna do with all the 2700X stock right now?
Dropping 2700X price to $249? but then the Ryzen 2700 and all 1800X/1700X/1700 will drop massively + 2600X/2600= Not good for business IMO.

They will sell only 3 top SKU's from $699[Ryzen 9 16C 3000X]/$599[Ryzen 9 16C 3000]/$499[Ryzen 7 12C 3000X] at first and rest will come 1Q later.
This is all wrong, and we told you that.

At least was spot on on 12C pricing :), Plus they prices top 8C @$399 so the 2700X can keep selling at good price.
IMO if the 6C can OC ~4.4Ghz then they gonna be best gaming CPU for money:).
