I don't care if they put a diesel engine on the frontend if they can squeeze out more performance and build some efficiency.

I will just wait until we see some die shots and benchmarks. We can speculate our asses off but since vega I'm not holding my breath.

That's roughly on the same level as Polaris, the transistor budget must have went somewhere at the end of the day.

It's quite interesting though how everyone cares whether or not this is a brand new architecture , as if that's even a thing these days. Realistically speaking these things are almost never a clean slate design, that goes for both CPUs and GPUs. You can shuffle pipeline stages, execution ports, etc all you want you can never really call it "new", unless there is something truly fundamentally different , such as the transition to unified shaders.

And how would any of this even matter, if it's faster would people not be able to sleep well at night knowing it wasn't because of some exotic new arch ?

I will just wait until we see some die shots

And you could infer from that what ?

The shape? It would be bad if there are right angles. Electrons don't do right angles. Ever heard of the Obtuse Electron Flow Theory?

I want Navi to be a success, but the whole strange brigade as only bench showed is just so shady... really shame on them for even doing that and not showing us more. They are supposed to be winning gamer support, not being like their garbage monopoly competitors with more lies.

AMD used to be for the gamer, I wish that were still true, but showing us one single game in benches... that heavily favors AMD... just shame... we all know it will match a 2060 mostly.

GCN arch favors this game and we know Navi is supposed to be part GCN. How do we know if the GCN part that remains in Navi is the part that "helps" that game?

For all we know, games favored by GCN cards may be Navi's worst performers.

If this turned out to be true, AMD would be catching nVidia with their pants down ...

Unlikely, yes, but i wouldn't rule it out.

then why would AMD not show a few more benches instead of one single game? I understand your argument, just seems like marketing hype for the stock holders. I probably will buy one anyway. or two for crossfire.

The other issue is many on this forum think cards like the 2070 didn't move the market forward... hell Turing in general, stagnation they said. Yet here we are waiting for Navi to bring the same levels of performance and simlilar levels of efficiency despite being built on cutting edge 7nm tech.

They will undercut as best they can on price, but like the Radeon VII I'm not expecting miracles.
The rumor came out quite a long time ago that Navi would merely be Polaris part 2. It would be a midrange architecture designed to be profitable, in terms of margin, but not all that competitive with Nvidia in terms of enthusiast-level performance. Another small die high yield part on a low power dense library process, ready for years of rebadging.

Consoles are a pox on gaming. I've explained why ad nauseam. "Ports" shouldn't be a thing. There should be a unified software layer atop the already standard x86 hardware layer. There is zero benefit in the current state of affairs and serious drawbacks (unless you work for Sony/MS and/or hold their stock).

As for competition bringing good results for us... Duopolies don't really cut it. That's true for consoles, true for search, true for CPUs, true for GPUs, etc. Unfortunately, though, the days of high-quality competition in many tech spaces have been relegated to the distant past. The power of Sony and MS, for example, are mainly the reason for these redundant artificially incompatible low-end PCs being treated like they're something different and special ("consoles"). If people would wise up they'd understand that there is nothing beneficial about enabling this. All form factors are available on x86 and Vulkan + OpenGL on Linux takes care of the software side. All it takes is for people to wise up.

Back when BluRay was a luxury and the PlayStation (for example) had custom non-x86 hardware there was some validity in the "console" being a separate entity. Back when the only thing in gaming was DirectX with its Windows tax there was some validity. No longer.

Oh so you remember well R600? Navi don't have 512-bit memory bus width, nor does it have huge die size. So I don't see what Navi have something in common with 2900XT. Why don't we wait before it comes out

Navi die:

"pure rdna" ?

come on,navi was announced 3 years ago as next gen,now it's another year for the actual "pure" next gen ?
ah,at least there's an upside for the fanbase after the presentation.
amd never disappoint when it comes to delivering something people can wait for.
it's like a toy hype train that runs in circles.

2020 it is though,it's not like I'm upgrading this year.

AMD says and boosts a lot of things every time they announce a gpu, take it all with a grain of salt til you see independent review sites put it through its paces. Then you will know if anything they said is truthful or load of bull. AMD sadly has been a lot of latter last bunch of years on GPU side but they did finally get off their butts on cpu so maybe its not.

Computex was just a sneak peak for rdna mach. Navi skus announcement will come at E3 10th of June. So just wait week and half or so and you have all the numbers.

While true they have done that in the past, at least this times around they are not over hyping it. Definitely better than what the hype train was with Raja in charge. And watching all the Intel Xe hype now, I'm not missing that guy a bit.

AMD could reasonably double that in Arcturus if they stick to GDDR6.

Radeon VII has only 255 sq.mm populated by transistors. the rest is empty spacers between the memory controllers and the core so that they don't overheat or something. So it doesn't count. With GDDR6 there will be no such thing. so we get the same transistor count on smaller area or at least 12.00 mTr.

It seems to me that the closest historical parallel is more the 3870/3850, although TPU's review gave the 3870 worse performance per dollar and worse performance vs. the 8800 GT.

I'm still trying to figure out how they are saying this first round of Navi will compete with 2070, even slightly ahead, yet VII will remain the top gpu. Considering that the VII basically competes with the 2070 now (unless you block it) - color me confused?

Depends on the res, Radeon VII sits in between the 2070/2080. At 1080, yes it does compete with the w070 but as the res goes up it pulls away from the 2070 and at 4k competes with the 2080. I'd like to ask who spends $700 on a card to play at 1080p nowadays?
