RTX 2070 artifacting when power limit is set to max

Hi guys!

So I just got 2070 gaming z, then used msi oc scanner and when it set a curve of +135 core clock I was using it for a couple of days without problems. Then I booted up Resident Evil 2 and suddenly white artifacts everywhere! I noticed in that moment power usage was 104 while power limit was set to 100 in afterburner, so I thought I happened because there wasn't enough power so I reset clock speed to stock and raised power limit to max, then ran furmark test. After a couple of minutes same white artifacts, so I restarted pc, returned power limit to 100 and ran furmark again with everything on stock for 30 min twice and everything was fine, also all games ran fine after hours of playing (ac oddisey, kingdom come, metro exodus...)

Now my question is, what does this mean!? Is there insufficient power from psu? Is it because I raised power limit without touching core voltage? Could it be that it's just unstable at max power limit? Or is it a faulty card perhaps?
Psu is coolermaster b600 rev.2 (Yes I know its not ideal and I should get a better one, but since I don't have optical drive or ssd or anything of that sort that would draw more power I thought it was enough, am I wrong?)

It's only been 2 weeks since I got the card and if it's faulty I would really like to return it asap so any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Artifacts are normally down to the memory being too heavily overclocked. When the core is pushed too hard, the game will either freeze, your pc might freeze and your screen will go blank or it will CTD and you'll get a message that pops up from the Nvidia control panel thing saying that it has recovered from a crash or error.

I see, I didn't touch memory at all, and after I returned power limit to 100 and core clock to +0 everything is fine, so I don't know what the problem is. Is there any way I can figure this out?

Unless you have a very special version of that 2070 Gaming Z and a newer version of Afterburner than 4.6.1 then there is no way you can rise the power limit. I have two. I will not copy your torture but I'm sure that the card is fine since you cant replicate under normal gaming.

Stop using Furmak. Test you GPU in games if that is the purpose for the purchase. It has noting to do with power to the GPU, it will donwclock if it needs more than the setting. A short 104 % at 100 % is normal.

Alright, so when I was playing Resident Evil 2 and using +135 curve on core clock, power usage went to 104, and in that moment artifacts appeared and game crashed. Same thing happened when I used test option in oc scanner. Power usage went to 116 at one point while max power limit you can set in afterburner is 111. I don't know if that is relevant or not but what I can say for sure is that artifacts only appear when power goes beyond 100. So what is the likely cause of this, psu or gpu?

Since you didn't fill out the System Specs I have a hard time to help you. If you have a heavy OC 9900k and the PSU is eight year old there you go. But I think that you found your maximum OC for your GPU and that is lower than +135 MHz.

Wizzard managed to get 90 MHz on his sample. I stay on 40-50 since I run 24/7 and plan to do it for years. Settle for less than 135. Your artifacts/crash is due to too high OC.

I started having instant crash to desktop or the smallest amount of artifacts in games with my MSI Gaming Z RTX 2060. Had to back down on the GPU overclock. Haven't had any trouble since.

Good for you, mine just crashed in game with artifacts all over and "error dxdevice hung" message at stock speed

Bought it two weeks ago, but the thing is the store where I got it has sold out gaming z model, and I don't want them to repair it or anything so I don't know what to do...

Well. There are a few other steps we can take here...

1. Deal with it - If it breaks it breaks - live with it.
2. Send it back for a refund and buy or exchange it for a different card that they do have in stock.

Oooo... heart goes out to you. Sounds an aw ful lot like the dreaded memory degradation plaguing early batches. Sorry you're dealing with this. I'm praying I avoid that fate. Believe I got my 2060 at the same time at biffzinker... no issues yet, knock on wood. Still running a slight OC on memory.

I've heard that with memory issues like this with the 20 cards, turning down the memory usually fixes it and doesn't really hurt performance much. Might try that. The downside is that in all cases I've seen of people doing this, it eventually degrades to a point where there is no more turning it down. It just dies.

Just luck of the draw, I suppose. If it's what it seems like, it may well get worse over time. Or maybe it'll always work at stock.

You can always go through manufacturer for a replacement. By now they ought to be past the bad batches. With all of the press this stuff has gotten they better just handle it. When you get down to it, the card has a fault - no denying it.

Not sure how MSI handles warranty these days, but it's worth inquiring. Sometimes they'll work with you if you're calm but serious. I might wait and see if it does it at stock first. Just easier than trying to explain how the card crashes when you OC. They may take that and say no way, Jay. They really shouldn't, but in my experience, you never give any of these people a reason to deny your claim. The less you have to explain away the better, doesn't matter if it's legit.

Do you have enough time to wait until the store you bought it from has it in stock again? I mean, the card is still working for now. Or you could just go for a similar card thaty they have on hand... there are several good ones at around the same price point. I think one of these options is probably your best bet. Especially since it means you're not stuck without a card in the meantime. Just know that you always have MSI to fall back on, there.

Believe I got my 2060 at the same time at biffzinker... no issues yet, knock on wood. Still running a slight OC on memory.

No issues with the OC on memory still stable at +895 MHz was the GPU boost clock going unstable if I ran it at +115 MHz. No degradation on memory stay running the same.

@losemi, refund/exchange for a different brand if its out of stock.

Well that is pretty interesting.... and yet it worked fine before? Pretty freaky. Usually you'd associate artifacts with memory. Gotta be something going on there. God only knows what.

Yeah it use to pass the OC scanner test with 90%. When the OC started to fail it was getting 30-37% for the scanner test. I figured the warmer outside summer temperatures might be a factor but it's downstairs where it's cooler than upstairs.

Well I waited for them to restock with a new batch that's supposedly free of this memory issue and got a replacement a couple of days ago .So far everything is good. Here's something I noticed, when the card is idle afterburner shows power usage 7-8% and the one with memory problem was constantly at 11%. I don't know if this has anything to do with anything since I never used 2 different cards of the same model so I don't know if this is normal or not but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Anyways im very pleased with the replacement so far, it OC's higher than the last one and with just core OC It scored 14th on userbenchmark out of more than 100k tested, so fingers crossed this one doesn't die. Thank u all for the replies!

1. Stop running furmark. It is a power virus both AMD and nvidia do not reccomend running. It throttles the card and runs it at lower speeds so you arent really testing the same clocks.
2. Liky just too much overclock. Back off about 25 Mhz and see if that works.

Turns out it was the overclock on the memory I had to back it down to +866MHz. The GPU if using RTRT was unstable so I back it down to +76 MHz from +115.
