Because governments are watching. The computer industry has been trying to stay under their radar. They want to stay away from, say, The California Energy Commission, as much as possible.I personally don't understand why we're limiting ourselves to low TDP values in desktops, it's not like we're dealing with notebooks in which you have limited cooling capacity and power usage limits. This is the desktop platform, the sky is the limit. If the processor needs more power, there are 1000 Watt power supplies. If the processor needs more cooling then you know, go balls to the walls with a massive liquid cooling system.
PC World was the one that got the picture of the chip with the additional traces. That was when everyone knew it was coming.

I wouldn't be too quick to want to satisfy those hippies in California. They're worried about power usage meanwhile their state is literally on fire because of wildfires. Talk about being worried about the wrong thing! I can guarantee you that those wildfires are putting more CO2 into the air in one year than all of the power plants do in ten years.Because governments are watching. The computer industry has been trying to stay under their radar. They want to stay away from, say, The California Energy Commission, as much as possible.

If you need all those c/t to game, yippee!
Or, you know, buy something that costs half that much with half the c/t and more appropriate for gaming and rock a 2080ti AND a better monitor.

That's kind of a... weird way of looking at it. I mean, if you're an enthusiast sure, you can throw power requirements and cooling requirements out the window. Have your 1000w power supply and your water chiller. But neither Intel nor AMD is selling chips that require water chillers and go way past the point of diminishing returns. 99% of desktop users are fine with a 65w or less processor, if they even use a desktop anymore. Laptops and smartphones are where it's at for a lot of people these days.I personally don't understand why we're limiting ourselves to low TDP values in desktops, it's not like we're dealing with notebooks in which you have limited cooling capacity and power usage limits. This is the desktop platform, the sky is the limit. If the processor needs more power, there are 1000 Watt power supplies.
