Using a different switch type for the space bar and sometimes other larger keys isn't such an uncommon practice as to conclude that it is an assembly line quality issue. Usually they use slightly higher actuation force switches from the same family, for example, for a Cherry Brown MX keyboard, the space bar could be using a Clear MX switch, as it is believed it offers a much more overall balanced typing experience.
