German publication Heise.de got its hands on a Radeon RX 5500 (OEM) graphics card and put it through their test bench. The numbers yielded show exactly what caused NVIDIA to refresh its entry-level with the GeForce GTX 1650 Super and the GTX 1660 Super. The RX 5500, in Heise's testing was found matching the previous-generation RX 580, and NVIDIA's current-gen GTX 1660 (non-Super). When compared to factory-overclocked RX 580 NITRO+ and GTX 1660 OC, the RX 5500 yielded similar 3DMark Firestrike performance, with 12,111 points, compared to 12,744 points of the RX 580 NITRO+, and 12,525 points of the GTX 1660 OC.

The card was put through two other game tests at 1080p, "Shadow of the Tomb Raider," and "Far Cry 5." In SoTR, the RX 5500 put out 59 fps, which was slightly behind the 65 fps of the RX 580 NITRO+, and 69 fps of the GTX 1660 OC. In "Far Cry 5," it scored 72 fps, which again is within reach of the 75 fps of the RX 580 NITRO+, and 85 fps of the GTX 1660 OC. It's important to once again note that the RX 580 and GTX 1660 in this comparison are factory-overclocked cards, while the RX 5500 is ticking a stock speeds. Heise also did some power testing, and found the RX 5500 to have a lower idle power-draw than the GTX 1660 OC, at 7 W compared to 10 W of the NVIDIA card; and 12 W of the RX 580 NITRO+. Gaming power-draw is also similar to the GTX 1660, with the RX 5500 pulling 133 W compared to 128 W of the GTX 1660. This short test shows that the RX 5500 is in the same league as the RX 580 and GTX 1660, and explains how NVIDIA had to make its recent product-stack changes.

Interesting indeed. that means that the entire market will be covered once the Super Navi cards launch. This card has 24 compute units vs 32 on the 580 and the memory bus has shrunk to 128 from 256. Hopefully the price is right too. If the performance is real for this card it is why I am saying that the 5800 or 5900 will indeed be a powerful card.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure benchmark enthusiasts will love this card. AMD takes care of it's client base...

GTX1660 and RX580 have similar 3DMark scores, but 1660 leads in actual gaming performance (by a decent margin).
If RX5500 turns out to be RX580 replacement, it'll compete with 1650 Super, so it's pretty much as expected.

At least it doesn't devour 200W anymore. Thank you TSMC.

For a mid-end card, that's not bad. Still plays lots of games with 1080p without any issues.

Performance exactly where predicted months ago (marginally lower than custom oced 580s). Power consumption a bit higher but will see in retail samples when tested by our @W1zzard . Btw, any news on when those will go for sale or reviewed officially?

A factory O/C RX580 achieves a graphics score of 15,000 in Firestrike.

It drives me nuts when reviewers don't cite the Firestrike graphics score when reviewing graphics cards. Instead they cite the combined CPU + GPU which can't be used for purposes of comparison between cards.

Anyways, it seems like a great card.

On a newer process node, with similar performance and slightly lower power consumption! Not too good. Plus already pummeled, including the rumoured 5500XT.

I remember when people were saying that the 5700/XT were the genuine polaris replacements...

IMO the only similarity with Polaris is that they have a 256-bit bus. I'd say that they're just like Nvidia's xx80, the fastest card before the flagship enthusiast model (Ti/Titan).

Nowdays, mid range in like RTX 2060 or rx 5700

may be we can call rx 580/ rx 5500 or gtx 1660 in the mid-lower or low-upper category..

True, but you probably got my point. It feels pretty rough to call a 300+ eur/usd card as a mid-end card. :D More like a lower high-end.

With today's pricing there is a reason that the 580 and now 5500 would be called low end. Gone are the days of 199 max for low end 249 max for mid grade and 399 max for high end. The 2080 is $1000 the 2080TI is $1400 and 5700Xt are over $500 here in Canada.

I miss those days when you could have a high-end card for under 200eur, HD 4850....

e: I'd call GTX 1650 and RX 560 etc. as low-end.

Perf per watt is meh.
Imho, this thing should not cost more than $120. Maybe $160 for the XT, if it ever comes out. Otherwise it'll be a failure just like 1650.

So, I'll guess RX 5500 XT will compete against GTX 1660 Ti with same price and performance between GTX 1660 TI and RTX 2060
So Nvidia will release a GTX 1660 Ti Super to gain atention.
Competition has returned, just too sad that they have too high prices I'd love to see GTX 1660 Ti Super at 220$, an GTX 1660 Super 190$
GTX 1650 Super at 130$ or less...... But Its just a dream.....

The only downside is the amount of different models on the market. I miss those days when buying a graphics card didn't require you to actually find out what you're buying.
