HP Unveils new ZBook Studio and ZBook Create Notebooks

Today, HP Inc. unveiled its newest Z by HP mobile workstation and HP ENVY portfolio - designed for creators who push the envelope of what's possible. The HP ZBook Studio, HP ZBook Create, and the HP ENVY 15 are the latest additions to the HP Create Ecosystem, which launched at Adobe MAX in 2019.

The powerful line-up enables all levels of creators, including consumers, prosumers and professionals, to capture, create, and bring to life digital concepts and ideas that can be shared, enjoyed, and experienced. In the past, creators had to choose between heavy workstations or bulky gaming devices to get the power they require for work and play. Will we ever see similar cooling and screens in a HP laptop with AMD? Latest Ryzen 4000 seem quite worthy of such treatment.

Imagine if they add LM TIM in the mix too!

HP Envy based on Zen2 -U have been announced already.

ZBook would need the more powerful -H chips, which are currently directed to gaming laptops (fortifying AMD's core market).
Imagine if they add LM TIM in the mix too!
I can imagine a lot, but what's your point?

ENVY with AMD are just some x360 (dare I say junk) pieces. I meant some decent 'desktop brick' or something similar. No less than EliteBook that is; I don't count these 455 as worthy of my attention.

As for the LM TIM, I think it would certainly trim 3 to 5 degrees C at least. The lower temp would surely allow for quieter operation, as the TIM is usually one of the biggest thermal bottlenecks. It would surely allow for more frequent and sustained boost clocks, which is always nice to have.

Yeah well, you wanted an Envy so I mentioned the one confirmed.
HP offered EliteBooks with Ryzen 3x00U, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't update them this year. There's probably a limited supply so they don't announce anything at this point.
As for the LM TIM, I think it would certainly trim 3 to 5 degrees C at least. The lower temp would surely allow for quieter operation, as the TIM is usually one of the biggest thermal bottlenecks. It would surely allow for more frequent and sustained boost clocks, which is always nice to have.
Quieter operation - no.
Higher boost... maybe. But that would create even more noise. :)

Well, title of the article being 'Zbook blah blah' implies I was talking about Zbook-class (or at least spec-wise) lappy. Or so I thought. :)

With better heat dissipation it's always a win-win. CPU is either idling with low temps, i.e. low noise from fans and lower power draw from them.
Boosting to higher clocks for a bit longer would mean get the job done quicker, i.e. get back to lower power states faster, i.e. waste less heat on average. Or at least in bursty workloads and good SW optimization.
For sustained high loads we'd hit another thermal bottleneck, so it doesn't really matter past certain amoumt of time.

Yeah, not really.
The whole point of very good TIM (or active heatsinks, i.e. peltier) is to lower CPU temperature for the stationary state. In other words, it does make a difference in long loads, because it could make the "final" clocks slightly higher (at the same temp).

But initially, moving from idle to boost, CPU heats up very quickly and the slightly higher thermal conductivity of TIM doesn't make a big difference for how long boost lasts. And even if TIM was infinitely conductive, the CPU would still be limited by the heatsink, which has to be warmed up to start dissipating efficiently. It's not instantaneous.

Also, have faith in OEM cooling solutions. A dud happens from time to time, but in general they're way more efficient and optimal than what you're used to in DIY desktops.

OEM cooling is the easiest - OEM aim for the cheapest way to get a job done. They can certainly produce better designs but it is more costly, and over 10 million units it makes quite a difference even for a 2c per unit. So, why would OEM give us 3 degrees more thermal headroom?

Well, I feel pretty confident with my knowledge of thermodynamics, so if you want to open a discussion, make a separate thread. If I have enough time (like: next weekend maybe?), I can probably provide some calculations as well. :)

But you know... for this discussion to make sense, you have to understand the difference between temperature and heat. Which you probably do, but the comment about TIM improving heat dissipation threw me of balance. :)

In short - heat travels like this:
CPU > TIM > heatsink > air
So the actual limit of dissipation is always in the heatsink, i.e. when heat moves from the system to the "infinite" environment.
Heat (energy) is conserved, so everything the CPU emits has to go through the heatsink.
In other words: heatsink-air surface is the actual limitation and layers that exist between it and CPU (that is: heatsink body, TIM, IHS) only affect the temperature.

Also, keep in mind liquid metal TIMs have fairly high minimal operating temperature.
I don't really know products used in DIY PCs, but google says Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut is popular. Manufacturer says it's fine from 10*C up.
Laptops are usually rated for operation from 5*C, sometimes even 0*C. Of course TIM will heat up quickly, but I'm not sure if this wouldn't force laptop manufacturer to change laptop temp range accordingly.

You seem a little confused. You say OEMs go for the "cheapest way to get a job done" - which is absolutely true for every company making any kind of product. Then you say they could make something better. Of course they could - but why if the existing one gets the job done?

If you like having low temperatures (I don't judge), you can fullfil that need on your DIY desktop. :) Laptops just aren't made with that in mind.
