Blu-ray Version of '300' Outsells HD-DVD Version 2:1

The epic tale of Leonidas and his 300 Spartans who bravely defended Greece from the Persian Empire is now an epic and successful film. In this day and age, it's not surprising to see that 300 was put on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Warner Brothers soon proclaimed that 300 was the fastest selling HD-DVD movie ever. However, the Hollywood Reporter has recently (figuratively) burst Warner Brothers' bubble by reporting that twice as many copies of 300 were sold on Blu-ray than on HD-DVD.

Blu-ray because it has more studios supporting it. Most other specs are the same, except blu-ray can store more, but it doesn't really matter right now.

I hope blu ray dies, sry i'm a anti-fan boy of sony. I can't stand sony's products. they are overpriced and they quality isn't that great of many of their products. I really hope hd-dvd wins this but it's looking like blu-ray will win. :shadedshu

Another thing I think helps Blu-ray is that PS3 supports it, so you get a game system and Blu-ray player in one. And it's (still?) cheaper than a standalone player? (I haven't checked prices for those in a while.) Wasn't there an article somewhere on how Sony was losing money on every PS3 sold because of the fact that PS3 has Blu-ray capability?

I liked 300 to. It was a good movie, just bad ending, the spartans should've at least fought a little more.

Sony didnt invent blu-ray, it was invented by an incredible amount of companies, its just that sony integrated it into the PS3, so dont go bad mouthing blu-ray due to your hatred of sony, for your information it was invented by: Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson.

Don't pick a console based on hd formats. One day the players will be $200 and under and will be much more responsive than a console is now. Just look at it this way....it's a bonus.

Putting aside the fact that I may be a closet Sony fanboy, this is good news. The sooner one of these formats dies completely the better for everyone. Except maybe Toshiba, we'll see. I'm just pissed off that PS3 is still $1200 in NZ. Grrrrr

Lets see, don't like Apple to much, Hate dell, not a hp fan, dislike all or JVC products, lg make a lot of crappy stuff, Panasonic always felt cheap to me, Mitsubishi, well i have nothing against them. love pioneer, phillips makes ok stuff, love samsung, hate sony, never like TDK either, Hitachi is awesome. Thomson is eh. So out of 14 i like 4

Neither is a better format.

For all intents and purposes, the formats are IDENTICAL. (data compression of video steam). The only difference is therefore:

1./ Type/reliability of media
2./ Extra "feature set"
3./ Size of disk

ANSWERS

1./ HD-DVD is a more reliable media format... blu-ray (unfortunately) isn't as "wear proof" and there have already been recalls of blu-ray disks

2./ HD-DVD has a more extensive feature set in the minimum specifications. Therefore HD-DVD disks usually have more menu features etc

3./ Blu-ray is 2x the capacity. But for HD video, and normal 3hr movie, a blu-ray disk will be half empty. Note that due to identical data compression methods, the extra size of the disk can only be used for LONGER movies, or a SECOND movie. You cannot get a "better quality" movie on the same HD-TV. So this extra capacity is not worth it for a single film. After all, 99% of movies are less than 3 hrs, so the only true feature of the extra capacity is a second film on the same disk! (Except for TV soap, where you COULD get twice as many episodes on a disk... )

At the same price, points 1 and 2 win.

At a HIGHER PRICE, blu-ray doesnt win 3 for me.

Hence, IMO, HD-DVD is the winner.

Great movie indeed.

Blu-Rays ace in the hole was its 1080p support that HD DVD couldnt touch. Until recently, newer players, not gen 2s, but the newest ones, support 1080p. Who knows, HD and Blu might get back together and merge into one.

Sony and Samsung are the creators and guardians of the Blu-ray format with the rest just being the backers of the format.

That's actually not true. The studio support is there but they are not releasing that many movie titles. But don't take my word for it, look here. Before you post you better find out which movies are already under Sony and which are backers.

Not true, the backbone of Blu-Ray is PS3 not stand alone players. Look here and here for details.

Actually, stand alone Blue-Ray players have many more options than the PS3 version. As far as the movie 300 goes, they stretched the truth and didn't make a good story line at all. However, 300 is an AWESOME action movie!

I would say the 360 if and only if you can find one that doesn't die on you. I just bought a 360 yesterday and it's already starting to give me crap so I'm going to the store tomorrow and getting an exchange for a PS3.
