Sony Interactive Entertainment is expected to hold a virtual launch event on June 4, 2020, where it is expected to finally reveal the design, packaging, inclusions, initial exclusive game library, and more importantly price, of the next-generation PlayStation 5 game console. The event is scheduled for 1 PM PDT, and will be live-streamed. In related news, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that the PlayStation 5 won't be cheap, at least not cheaper than the rumored sub-$500 pricing of the Xbox Series X. "I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can. I don't necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games... all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform," he said.

I don't see why it should be expensive, the 360 had very capable hardware (even better GPU than anything in the market in 2005) but didn't cost a fortune and CPU comparable to a C2D.
Here it's more of the same, a Renoir plus a mid range next gen GPU (especially for Sony).

Custom NVMe SSD, a ton of GDDR6 memory, custom SoC, etc.
I mean, what kind of gaming PC do you get for $500, not counting the display?

Yeah, about that... first of all, inflation. Xbox 360 was priced at $399 at launch (2005/11/22). Those 399 dollars would be over 500 dollars today... so, it would not be outrageous if Sony wanted to ask that kind of money.

Second of all, I imagine Sony would like to not sell the consoles at a loss, like it's been said above.

Third, we don't really have much information on RDNA2 yet (it's not available anywhere), and saying that its computing power is over 10 TFLOPS (which, supposing we are talking about single precision, is trading blows with the RX 64, the Radeon VII, the 1080 Ti or the Titan XP) isn't exactly useful either, so I would hold judgement on the GPU.

And fourth, well, TheLostSwede already said it...

Not even. Even assuming 2% YoY, it would be around $80 more. Actual YoY inflation from 2011 to today would be a difference of $54.77. Not over $100 dollars

MS lost money on each 360 sold, until product revisions made it profitable. Of course they had to replace a lot of launch 360s at their own expense too.

sorry, my mistake thought it launched in 2011 for some reason.

The original model, no. There were new "packages" for the console in 2010, 2011 and 2012 (the S or Slim model), though, and a less-known motherboard revision in 2014.

Not shocked at all that it'll be more than the Xbox Series given the 1TB of PCIe 4.0 flash storage.

I expect that both of these consoles will be sold for over $1K down here in Australia. I just know that we'll be slammed with them both.

I'd expect a more reasonable $799 when you consider the previous top of the line one was around $599

I am not expecting PS5 to be cheaper than MS Xbox Series X in the first place. Based on observations, MS is more willing to sell consoles at a loss to increase their market share and I am somewhat certain they will continue to do this.

The 360 and PS3 were both intially sold at a loss. The Wii was not, and it sold like hotcakes. MS and Sony learned their lesson and I don’t think they intend to do that anymore.
Wii targets the casual gaming market, and did not have any competition from Sony or MS. Which is why they do not have to compete on pricing nor on hardware. It took some time before Sony and MS to figure out what they are missing out after looking at the success of Wii, and subsequently both introduced their own motion detection controls.

Speaking of a 360 I just scored a new open box "HP Spectre x360 15 (i7-8705G, Radeon RX Vega M GL) " for $100's on Ebay. It lists it with 512GB SSD which is odd because that model came with a
Toshiba XG5-P KXG50PNV2T04, 2TB. I think that could be a copy/paste product info listing mistake though. That model had a few glitches though apparently while gaming it could throttle rather badly is what a review said on it. Really even so I think I could fix that issue I'm hoping by just tweaking the GPU's max core clock speed and/or adjusting the CPU's briefly so it doesn't boost quite as high and the overall PC runs a bit cooler it's clearly a heat issue. Comes with 2x8GB of DDR4 2400MHz as well supports up to (2x32GB) 64GB. I think the listing price was probably a mistake and was meant to be $1000's most likely. I'll be stoked if I get at that price and it works fine. Hopefully that SSD really is the 2TB one that alone would justify the cost because I could jack that one for my desktop and replace it with a cheaper smaller sized M.2 for the laptop. Even if it's a actual 512GB SSD if it's a HP one that PCIe x4 I might still swipe and it put in a cheaper 128GB to 256GB M.2 in place of it.

Either way I think I'm interested in buying the PS4 as soon as it is launched. I should be able to save on the purchase because I have a family member that is always offering me discounts on Sony products due to a working relationship.

I'm not so sure, if you also factor in the general increase in the cost of consumer electronics that seems to have been happening since the end of last year and the horrible Aussie $$, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see it over 1K
