Yeah, I don't care if it's slower. Firefox is much better by way of functionality(extensions), its safer by way of the COMPLETELY open source code base that gets examined almost daily and trust is simply not an issue. I'll deal with 1/2 second longer load times for much better security & reliability. Thank You.

If you want speed and privacy pair Firefox with Squid Cache on a USB flash drive for the best of both worlds.

Does that work today with encrypted communications, though?

I care about as little for browser benchmarks as I do for game benchmarks. If the speed is sufficient, it is OK. After sufficient speed, there is room for other considerations, like security, privacy, functionality, GUI, etc etc.

Similar things apply to gaming. There is more than the highest FPS number... I get the impression you're a big fan of the new Edge. This is great, just don't make it a crusade. Every other post seems to go in that direction. First with the image sharpening (and you still didn't let it go... :p)...

I voted no, but have to add in the following;
Hell to the NO. A strongly expressed and proudly displayed pair of middle fingers to you Microsoft! Did I mention "no"?

Not quite nearly enough, no :D

But I will admit, there is a sliver of IE6 pain left inside of me too. I really like the new Edge, as I did the other one. But still. No.

No problem, man. If you have the nerves to be patient with a laggier and heavier browser good for you.
I had never thought that I would ditch Google Chrome altogether. Uninstalled it on my phone, as well, and it now flies with Edge ;)

I don't care about security because it's not critical in my case.

Proper Edge is discontinued, isn't it? A browser is literally one of the worst applications to not have up-to-date. Its the front-end for EVERYTHING we use nowadays. If anything is always up to speed, its the browser, quite simply because of massive userbase and usage. Many companies scramble every day to keep their applications fully compliant with the latest version.
I'm pretty sure MS will patch any new holes found in old Edge too for at least for some time, after that, who knows.
Even if you have not-up-to-date "proper" Edge, it will run extremely slow, it's unstable and crashes all the time.
Why this hate towards Chromium-based Edge ? It's working and it's excellent.
It won't turn slow or start crashing overnight, probably not for years (+ see above)

Google has too much power over the internet to begin with and this just increases it. Also it's a horrible memory hog (even though MS has been able to remedy this apparently)

FWIW, EdgeHTML version still follows Windows version, but I'm not sure if Microsoft is actually making changes in the code or if it's just something automatic that happens regardless.

It looks like whatever was the issue was fixed by re-starting the whole browser.
I couldn't take screenshots of the browser window either, it looked just like Chrome screenshots, way overbright (I'm using HDR colorspace on desktop), but after restarting the browser that seems to have fixed itself too
Aaaand now the cursor problem is back, restarting browser doesn't help, neither does full blown reboot of the computer.

Maybe something is borked with your registries.

I am asking for another very helpful feature - how to have individual language preference for each different tab ?

That's a profile-wide setting. What you can do is switch profiles when you need different language preferences, but that also means having different sets of settings, histories, cookies, saved passwords/forms, etc.

At the very least, you can have Edge jump straight into one profile or another by adding the parameter --profile-directory and pointing the profile folder, which should be in
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge SxS\User Data . In my case, I have my main profile which is "Default" and this one that I just created to test my idea, which is "Profile 2".
EDIT: You can run multiple profiles concurrently, no need to close one profile to start another.

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work, but instead after I press Enter I get this:
1591392096712.png

But it gets even crazier! It only happens on some tabs, including every new one I open, but one of the tabs that has been open for longer works like it should, like in your images

Which KB is the update? It should be in the article. TIA

First of all, welcome to TPU! Hope you enjoy your stay here! :)

Regarding your question, it doesn't seem to have a KB number, at least according to a search through Microsoft Catalog. The source article for this newspiece however is KB4559309.

It's likely that Edge, once upgraded to the new version, will handle the updates itself, sort of, instead of Windows Update. That's how it works at least in my case.

I been enjoying it, is there a way when you open it automatically goes incognito, adding "--incognito" doesn't work like chrome.

EDIT: Add -inprivate as a parameter. I suggest keeping it separate from the original shortcut, since when Inprivate mode, it doesn't really allow you to switch back to the main/normal profile in an easy manner.

20200608-184337.png

Right-clicking the shortcut in the Start menu or the taskbar should provide you the option for In-Private, which is the same thing..

Sharpening is an effect that distorts the original image. It does not create a higher resolution.

You might not like it but it does add clarity or does improve the overall resolution compared with Google Chrome:

Nah it clearly looks oversharpened. I was past that since Warframe, to be honest. Its also the most utilized way to 'improve' shitty jpegs across the web (not with browser but just by adding a filter on the pic itself). This is meme quality photography, if anything.

Another thing it reminds of, is Borderlands / cell shaded graphics. Everything has an outline on your Edge example, even if there isn't one. Thats not sharpness, its an outline, surrounding a still shitty quality picture :)

Sharpening is a bit like 'improving audio' with equalizers and effects... the end result is never what it was intended to be. For the best quality, you want a flat EQ, neutrality.

I don't know if the Chrome is neutral, it's just that it irritates me and disturbs me. So the Edge one even if not perfect, at least hides that irritation and makes me happier.

Its all about the source image being of decent quality really. I barely ever see low quality photos if I'm honest, even on the internet.

But yeah if it makes you happy, by all means go for it, but it won't hold a candle to good source material, and can even reduce its quality, after all, you're adding data to something that was already fine. The eyes also play tricks on us... we get used to a certain clarity or perceived sharpness and when we let go, it can easily take a few days before we've adjusted. That even happens if you suddenly move to a radically different resolution. I had real trouble grasping everything on a 1080p widescreen when I came from 1024x768 4:3. Took months to adjust and have the same comfortable viewing feeling.

That would be a nice test case, could be interesting for you. You've used sharpening for a while now, what happens if you keep it off for a few days... re evaluate and try to forget you're evaluating while working with it ;)

Note its not the browser adding its sharpening here by the way, its your radeon settings. You could also disable that and still work in Edge, find out if it does trickery besides sharpen - I did notice differences here on an NV card.

Very very interesting. I think they are right :)

Microsoft REALLY wants Windows 10 users to switch away from Google Chrome
