CD Projekt Red has announced another delay for what most certainly is the most anticipated game of this year. Cyberpunk 2077, which had a release date set for September, had already been delayed from its original release date in April. Now, the developers have announced they need some more time with the game before they let it loose on soon-to-be-empty shelves and digital storefronts.

Fret not: the game is apparently in great development shape. The announcement that was made today makes it clear that the game is already technically finished: all the quests, cutscenes, skills, items, and functionality are already in place. However, the game itself has become so complex that CD Projekt Red wants these extra months to get balance and bugs just right for the games' release. This makes sense, as it seems that CD Projekt Red's systems will be intertwined in a much more organic way than they ever did in The Witcher 3, which could result in some emergent gameplay and consequences for the games' systems. CD Projekt has already started distributing the game to specific outlets and gaming media who will be releasing their previews after the Night City Wire event, set for June 25th (itself delayed from June 11th as a show of respect for the Black Lives Matter movement). To their credit, the team at CD Projekt keeps their promises once again: the game will ship. When it's ready.

This also puts the games' launch around the release of both next generation systems from Sony and Microsoft. CD Projekt has already confirmed that the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be released after the original release, so it seems that console players who want to play Cyberpunk 2077 on their next-gen systems will have to take advantage of Microsoft's Smart Delivery system.

Just so it can launch with the PS5.

I've been looking forward to this for years, more than anything else, but I feel really sorry for people who already gave them $60 last year only to have the date pushed back again and again. Holding off on taking people's money would have been the decent thing to do.

From the article: "CD Projekt has already confirmed that the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be released after the original release ". So no, it's not because of the tin cans.

I think one should never give money for an unfinished product, but some people never learn. No one forces you to preorder stuff.

Though I might add, knowing CD Projekt Red, they're only delaying (again) to make the game more awesome, which I think is a lot better than playing with some half-done sh** on the original release date.

You will run on PS5 just the ps4 version with ps4 graphics and probably better loading. CDPR always had a very good relation with microsoft for some years, all the CP77 trailers and reviews were on MS presentations.

I gave them $60 for the pre order and I don’t care at all.

it makes sense, I think it gives time for RTX3000 OEMs to release their custom SKUs. usually they come more or less 1month after the founder edition announcement.
RTX2080 was released mid-sept, RTX2070 mid-october. they seems to follow the same timeline.

and Cyberpunk is the big teasing for raytracing this year. the 2 consoles wants to benefit from the hype.

its a good marketing deal for the industries (and CDprojekt)
less for pple who doesn't care about the 3000 or the boxes.

lets admit that it has been quite a time we haven't seen such a hype for a game.
expect your boss to come with pink hairs in November.

I do wonder if this game can live up to the hype?

Anyway, launching unfinished products will just lead to unsatisfied customers, far too many games are crap at launch these days. So delaying for bugfixes and polishing is good, but it's not if it leads to last minute changes.

Welp, one sure thing for me is that I've lost the hype when it was nothing alike with gameplay as the teasers promised "blade runner like" world instead it's another GTA clone. Might give a shot, hence Saint Row success.

I have so many games I haven't beaten already. It's ridiculous. They could probably delay it to the beginning of next year, and I probably wouldn't care, honestly. I am excited about the game, though; I just know, realistically, it'll be another game that collects dust because I bought it on release.

I do wonder if this game can live up to the hype?

I believe it will. Mostly. I guess we'll get a reasonably good idea during the stream on the 25th.

Let me guess. You’ve been conditioned by everyone except CDPR to accept games not ready for release.

Well, this is how CDPR does business. With no publisher to force them to release a product that isn’t ready, they can actually make sure the game is ready. What a concept!

We must be playing entirely different GTA games because I don’t feel that at all with this. If you are basing on the initial teaser well that’s your fault. Thise things are merely concepts that are meant to gauge interest, nothing more.

I'm telling ya, development must be a dumpster fire. They bit more than they could chew.

Just so it can launch with the PS5.

I doubt the PS5 is lauching soon enough for this game. You can't port the game this late, realistically speaking, developers have barely gotten dev kits by now.

Well at least it will give them more time to iron out any bugs and add some polish.

It actually literally says in the article next gen will receive its own version later on.

What are you smoking? Its about as strange a comment as saying 'they took our money' when the choice of a pre order is entirely up to the individual AND its widely known you're dumb if you pre order in the first place. No matter the dev. It does not promote anything that is good in gaming at all. On top of that, can't you just cancel the pre order anyway?

I'm telling ya, development must be a dumpster fire. They bit more than they could chew.

Delays for games are about as common as the flu, what are you talking about? The problem is with all those studios that do NOT delay and instead rush out a piece of crap that is simply unplayable at launch.

In any case...
- this is why you don't pre order
- this is why its best to just trail behind new releases to begin with

Saves you a lot of headaches... I'm not really bothered with this delay even though I'd love to start playing the game. Just give it to me feature complete and well polished. Its not like writers or producers release books and movies that get patched post release... why would games / should games be different? Its strange if you think of it, especially for SP-oriented titles.

Massive delays for games like these are harbingers of doom. I have some connections to the game development world and let's just say I know when "it bad".

Its also bad to release a product containing blockers or majors, right?

All I'm saying is that you'd be shocked to find out what a delay actually entails, it usually means the game is still absolutely broken and unplayable. Executives avoid delays at all costs, when it happens, that's big and when it happens twice...

I think they have the Polish part down pretty good.

Polished gold, right there :D

Spreadsheet world versus reality... 'its bad' happens in all companies all the time. Executives get worked up about it all the time. Yawn. I see it every day :)

Its just a rock/hard place situation. You either release with broken shit, or you don't and get delayed. Its not new to software development, really, no matter how much you plan and project. Let's avoid the sensationalist Youtube headline that somehow CDPR is in trouble. They're really not. They take a few months time to release a big budget title. Full stop.

You don't delay a game to "polish it", whoever actually believes that is either delusional or naive to put it blatantly. I wish I was wrong but I know I'm not.

That's not what I said, did I, I spoke of majors and blockers which we seemingly both agree clearly exist in the product still :) You really want to believe CDPR might go under for this, be my guest, I just won't join you.

What I'm seeing is economical reality: their pockets run deep enough for the foreseeable time, so they can fund the delay, and when they release they have the number one blockbuster of 2020 on their hands, even if reviews are lukewarm. To have that sales cannon in the year 2020 which hits economies hard, is a major competitive advantage.

No problems whatsoever.

I am not saying that, I am just telling you what these kind of news are code for in the world of game development.
