System Name M3401 notebook
Processor 5600H
Motherboard NA
Memory 16GB
Video Card(s) 3050
Storage 500GB SSD
Display(s) 14" OLED screen of the laptop
Software Windows 10
Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
Soo... both next gen consoles go with 16GB for GPU + CPU, while targeting 4k. For Sony it's unified, Microsoft has 10GB of higher throughput, 6GB of lower throughput RAM.

Much faster SSD to GPU RAM transfers hence no need to pre-load data that is not immediately displayed is stated as the reason for going with conservative sizes (Cerny @ Sony)

Why would PC graphic cards of the next gen need more than 16GB? FOr people without SSDs?
Even going beyond 10GB seems an overkill.

You might be right, but it also depends on which card they serve with 16GB. I don't think many outside either company have a good idea of what's coming.
Perhaps "big navi" is a ~60 CU 256-bit memory card, affordable, decent, but no high-end card. ;)

Multiple rumors have stated it's going to be at least 80CUs

More reputable sources like MLID have speculated on two 3080 variants. One with 20GB. Tho if Nvidia really does end up giving 3080Ti 24GB it will be a massive jump from current 11GB.
Personally i doubt it. I'll believe it when i see it.

Nvidia has a habit of releasing the highest-end consumer SKUs in phases to keep those who want the very best to be constantly shelling out money. It could very well be that they release later SKUs with substantially more memory.

The real question is now, how much will those cost. Knowing nVidia as one of the most greedy IT companies in the world, second only to Apple, I have a very bad feeling about this...

Nvidia is no more greedy or evil than their counterpart, as shown with e.g. Radeon VII.

It's not even greed, it's caring about shareholders...

Right. Very flawed system of business ownership.
You can say about shareholders what Churchill said about democracy: "it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time" :p

It's just how humans work.

Except we're not talking about democracy. We're talking about greed. Shareholders only care about money and profit. They don't care how it is made. The interests of the shareholders are put first when they should be near last. NVidia's shareholders need to be put in their place and shown why they need to let things be done a better way.

The money you get for selling your products, you divide between paying employees, shareholders, research. The more you charge, the more you can spend on all of these.
Greed is mostly a matter of opinion. If it wasn't, someone would have translated the (more or less clearly) defined crossing point into legislation by now.

My problem with shareholders of such companies is their desire to make stock the company's primary "product", over long-term profitability and product development.
But let's steer this topic back towards Ampere.

I believe 20/24 GB VRAM would be "wasteful" for gaming cards for the immediate future (while it will be useful for certain semi-pro users). I'm sure many will complain if Nvidia doesn't increase the memory, but the impact would be negligible if not nonexistent.

On the other hand, bigger numbers sell. "This card has 16GB VRAM, the other has 24GB" - many will choose the later if only for "futureproofing".

It certainly can. If AMD were to offer more VRAM for the performance tiers, it could help AMD sales, like it has many times in the past.

Hi,
Limited group sure they make more money off mainstream than limited groups willing to shell out thousands for max memory....
