Sony Launches PlayStation 5 Pre-Order Registration Site

Sony has recently launched PlayStation 5 pre-order registrations on the PlayStation website, without pricing or launch date information. To register for the pre-order queue you simply need to submit your PlayStation Network ID and ensure your email is associated with the account. This registration is simply for a pre-order slot for the PlayStation 5 from the Sony online store and not an actual pre-order. If selected you'll have a limited amount of time to complete your order, you may purchase one PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition along with up to 2 controllers. This early registration is only available to US residents with global availability expected later this year when the console is officially launched.

Price it right it will sell, try to please the shareholders and up the margins and it will sell poorly. With the whole pandemic in full swing for the 2nd wave, do they really think that people will rush to buy a gaming console that is not cheap enough to justify in the duration of an economic crisis?

Oh so now you have to unlock the "You play way too many video games!!! achievement before you're allowed to purchase their consoles? Or they're tracking how much you've already spent on their games...so instead of pay to win it's pay to pay with Sony. Seems super scummy.

If I were to guess, they're trying to estimate the number of consoles to ship to various countries (or provinces / states within a country). There will be very high demand for the first few months and very low stock.

Allocating the PS5s to the correct locations would result in more revenue and more happy customers.

It is scummy, but companies would usually give first priority to the major/regular users of their product when possible, as they're usually the ones most likely to upgrade when a new product comes out. At the same time, that doesn't mean that they should outright ignore the "casuals", and limit how many are available to them. I can't see Sony doing this to be honest though. They have to time their PS5 release alongside all the new games since both are dependent on each other.

If anything, I suspect this pre-order measure is just for those who want to order from Sony directly, as opposed to via whatever store you have reward points/credit with. In this case, it's Sony seeing how many they can immediately, directly market while skipping over the middlemen (stores like Amazon, BestBuy, GameStop, Target, Walmart, etc), and balancing out some stock that way in order to maximize sales for the impending Holiday rush.

this has nothing to do with that, they know it will sell well especially because of the pandemic. this is just a way for them to get actual PlayStation users first dibs on buying it, instead of scammers buying it and posting it at inflated profit. this is great news imo. it would be interesting to know what filter they are using though, is it trophies acquired, how old the psn account is, etc. and its limited to 1 console too, its a great way to get the console into hands of actual gamers and limit price gouging.
