MSI Announces the MAG B550 TORPEDO Motherboard

I feel MSI have too many different boards at the lower end. They have Bazooka, Mortar and now Torpedo. I think it is a matter of time they will introduce missile and grenade models. And in my opinion, the names are really awful.

I quite like the names actually. Punchy and easy to remember.

This looks identical to Tomahawk, but with one LAN instead of two. The Tomahawk was down to $165 this week. Are they discontinuing the Tomahawk after 3 months??
Another note about the Tomahawk, the video spec originally said HDMI maximum resolution of 4096x2160 @24Hz. Now the specs say HDMI 2.1 maximum resolution of 4096x2160 @60Hz. Did they release a new revision of the board, or it was HDMI 2.1 all along, and they updated the specs after the release of Ryzen 4000 APUs?

Perfect to combine with almost zero ports up front on most new cases nowadays. But at least there's a lot of front USB headers on MBs...

You could buy those 5.25 face plates with the USB ports and card reader stuff... Oh, wait, there's no more 5.25 drive bays on most cases these days, it was replaced by tempered glass and RGB bling.

Hubs are cheap, and leave less cords dangling from the back of the case.

The RAM traces aren't visible, and you can't have shielded traces on 4-layer boards (or at least manufacturers have never done it). Contrast the 4-layer SKUs like the Mortar, Bazooka and VDH and the similarity between this and the Tomahawk are plain to see.

And being a 6-layer PCB, it probably shares the Tomahawk's 5x2 ISL99360 VRM as well. Never have I seen discrete MOSFETs on a current 6-layer AM4.

I've also been seeing the Tomahawk dropping significantly in price here. I can't help but feel like there's no room for this Torpedo board.

For those complaining about USB ports, you're looking in the wrong place if you think MSI has you covered. The Tomahawk, Mortar and Bazookas all have the shitty 6-port layout on the back. TUF and Aorus Pro have USB aplenty.

It's also looks basically the same as board as MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI, just without the WiFi and the pretty light around the chipset.

I'm just waiting for the Booby trap and SCUD models to appear....

No complains with the MEG ACE I've got (So far) and it has enough ports and so on for my useage. This new one is probrably a rehash of an older model (Tomahawk) from what I've been seeing like the Unify is of the ACE model I've got now.
Could be fair to expect from it what the Tomahawk has shown based on that but a comparison between the two is really needed to nail it down.

More and more boards nowadays skimps on expansion slots to make spacing for large GPU coolers.

So I guess full ATX instead of mATX is now only really relevant for multi-GPU configurations, ie highest of high-end.

I agree with that, though I'd prefer a touch more professionalism (weapons have nothing to do with computer platforms), and some indication of positioning within the market. I'm starting to have a hard time being able to tell the differences among MSi boards - they're all relatively priced the same, and equipped the same.

mortar is the highest end, bazooka is almost gaming mid end

(there is no tomahawk in micro size, there is no mortar in full size)
