An increasing number of users are reporting the crash to desktop (CTD) issues with factory-overclocked NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards. The issues were reported on various forums and social media platforms.

ComputerBase has provided a quick overview of what users are reporting. At LinusTechTips forums users are reporting problems with ZOTAC GeForce RTX 3080 Trinity. Owners of MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus 3X OC are also noticing this type of behavior, a thread on Overclockers.co.uk seems to suggest. Even on ComputerBase’s own forums, there are threads describing the same problem.

The threads also mention other custom boards such as MSI Gaming Trio or EVGA’s. You can find them on NVIDIA forums, Tom’s Hardware forums, Tweakers, and also Reddit.

The problem:
This now clearly widespread, but still unexplored issue appears in a certain group of games when the boost clock exceeds 2.0 GHz. As soon as the clock speeds reach a certain level, the game crashes to desktop.

There is currently no official statement from any board partner, but ComputerBase has confirmed that they are in contact with the manufacturers. They were unable to reproduce this issue with at least three of the custom models they have.

It is currently unclear what is causing this problem. Whether this is a power supply issue, software bug, or maybe even too aggressive factory-overclocking from custom board partners, it is yet to be confirmed.

The solution:
At this time there were no official solutions to this problem. However, if you are experiencing such issues with crashing in games at higher clock speeds it is recommended to manually downclock the GPU by 50 to 100 MHz. Undervolting may also be recommended, but this requires MSI Afterburner 4.6.3 Beta 2.

I hope this is getting sorted soon, because I will buy a 3080 as well.

Just putting my thoughts into context:

Folks say AMD has terrible drivers, that I will not contest because I too have ran into these issues before, more than once in fact.
Nvidia has had hardware problems before and apparently once again.

Either situation isn't "Good" so critiziting one over the other doesn't solve a thing - It's still what it is in the end with each.

Point:
I've been lucky I was able to find a good driver version with my Radeon VII that works without issues, the card itself has been nothing but great since day one and is still doing fine today. I have Nvidia cards too and so far, so good but then again what I've got isn't exactly the newest, or even of the previous gen.
In fact the newest one I have is a GTX 970 I bought used instead of new.

TBH I'd rather have an Nvidia card but the expense of them I cannot afford. In truth with all the hardware problems they seem to have like this makes me wonder why they charge so much more than AMD does. Some say it's due to the performance or popularity of an Nvidia and that's all good but the following expresses things about it for me.

This is not the first time such has been happening and one can argue it's because it's a new arch but isn't that what R&D, testing and so on is supposed to reveal?
And after all that, does it make sense to implement soutions to fix these problems BEFORE they become an actual problem for the guy (That would be us) that just bought one?

With the extra expense of an Nvidia vs an comparable AMD by model you'd think so (I would and do in fact) but what one thinks vs what it really is are two different things too.

One that's dead is worth just as much as the next dead one whether it's an AMD or Nvidia card and just as useless, goes to the same place in the end too.

Overheating capacitors? Not enough cooling on the VRAM modules? Not enough power to the board??
They could easily test this ,that statement is bs that they couldn't reproduce it.

How can it be widespread and unexplored at the same time ?

We appreciate anyone bringing news to our attention, and that of the news editor mods. If you turn up something "newsworthy", feel free to tag one of the News mods to see what they have going, or if they would like to incorporate your thread into theirs. Such threads will most likely get merged, or closed, at the moderators discretion, but we do like to see everyone's input on Tech Topics.
The forums do not actually operate on brownie points for anything, first or not. We do, however to some extent, operate on warning points. Repeated off-topic posts, whether the thread is in the "correct forums" or not, will earn points appropriate to the infraction.
Please stay on topic, and I've alerted @Raevenlord to see if he'd like to merge this thread. Thanks for bringing it up, P4!

Seconded. @P4-630 usually sends newsworthy info to our inboxes as well. @Ahhzz there's no issue with merging the threads. One only has to look at the timestamp to see that P4 did post it before the news article, but discussion will just end up being fragmented.

It's offputting when someone beats news to the punch and the original thread is closed. Merge moving forward if you could...

We have a news section of our forums. If you will notice, there is no way to post there without permissions.
That means to me, that members should not be posting news, as they are posting in improper sections, and trying to beat the news posters to the punch, like it is some sort of game.

I suggest either said members send the news to the appropriate members, or expect us to not cater when the inevitable happens.

Maybe save your comments for the proper thread, when it arrives ;)

Also, so you all realize I am not alone in this stance.... straight from the guidelines you all agree to.....

Posting a lot of tech news articles in the forums.
  • One or two things when the newsposters are all on vacation is nice, but in general, please leave the newsposting to the news posters. It's their job, not yours.
