Looking for a Paperweight? Buy an Oculus Quest 2 and Get Your Facebook Account Locked

I pledge allegiance to Facebook and promise to use no social media but yours...now pretty please activate my hardware.
Nope, no thanks...I have my eye on HP. Wonder if I can trade in an HP-25?

and then the world wonders why VR isn't being adopted in mass ....

the choice of closing down a market will:
-limits your gaming options (like HBO & sorts)
-allow anybody that pays blackmarket value for your profile info to crosslink your PC info to IP address to FB profile to linkedin profile to teams profile to github profile, and to all your information)
(yes FB has already sold all your posted information to any crook on the planet, and with this , even more)

so will you use it?

we are already living the black mirror future for years, slowly it becomes more obvious

fb & oculus will be sued soon due this...the more people will have issues the better and higher chances to end this "integration"

I was talking to my nephew who and he said one of his friends who is in the know said that is one of the things they are working on. Apparently Covid and Half Life Alex have had a positive uptick in VR adoption.
But what did your uncle who works at Nintendo have to say? ;)

Told you so.

Stay far away. Just do it

I wonder how long until Facebook implements a 'social score' (just like the Black Mirror episode). It's all fun to poke at the tin foil wearers until it's

You mean like the Peoples Republic of China?

You must be fun at parties.
People at the parties I go to generally don't make jokes where the punchline has logical flaws that clear - unless that's the point, of course. At least I've yet to experience that. Sorry for actually paying attention to what I read, I guess?

Cyberpunk in VR sounds like you'd need a 3090 to run it (or potato graphics settings i guess).

This is being way overblown.. Most users are good to go within a few minutes after verifying. I haven't had any issues and I preordered and got it on the first day. I know a lot of people have issue with FB and that's fine. I mean I did at one point as well but at the end of the day, they aren't any different than the other big names. The Quest 2 has by far exceeded my expectations. I mean the ease of use is a huge selling point. The hardware that you are getting for $299 is amazing. Now with that being said so far I'm using SideQuest which is an unoffical store. It's pretty great and I'm playing Half-Life with full motion controller support and Pavlov.

Also, there is already a way to use the Quest without a FB account. If you are looking to get into VR this is the best and cheapest way to do so. You can play wireless PCVR with this using Virtual Desktop. If anyone is interested in VR and AR then don't forget to check out our Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality section!

I hope FB gets sued into oblivion over this mandatory integration.

Tin Foil theory: FB is going to be untouchable because the government(s) also use it as a valuable data mining tool?

Facebook ruining Oculus is nothing new.
It keeps happening though because people keep throwing money at Zuckerberg.

Sued on what basis? That would essentially set a legal precedent where it's no longer allowed to require an account to use a device, which ... well, ain't gonna happen.

I've said this before but this my issue with FB, is it being integrated into everything.
try to apply for a job online the first thing there isn't companies job Application forum, it's Login with Facebook.

I think that came from a "promise" that the Oculus ecosystem would not require integration with Facebook...

IMO, if it's not in written down in the documents of the deal, there is no basis for suing.

The lawsuit would be consumers who already have said device and do not want or need the use of other software to use. Because they did not buy the device with those Policy's in place and are not under the terms of agreement.

When I first heard about the upcoming requirement for a FB account to use any Oculus VR headset, I was like "who cares, just make a John Doe account" but that doesn't seem to be a working solution.

I better be careful when posting drunk shit on FB though I dunno does this affect (at least yet) on older VR headsets like my CV1?

Policies and ToS change all the time. I don't think this will be enough for suing. Besides, from what I read here, it seems that you still needed an Oculus account to use this device. It's not like it was completely standalone and suddenly it received a firmware update and now you have to keep it connected to the Internet to use it...

However, I think this might be interesting for regulators, considering they're looking at Facebook's (and other companies too, like Google) acquisitions over the years.

Well, if I can prevent assimilation, I will... so........ no go with these!

Oh yeah... 'de'? :p

Also, the title is clickbait at best, misleading to be fair...no? FB doesn't ban your account when you try to hook these up... you even said, it is the verification process that is already in limbo that needs to be corrected, right? If your FB account is verified, there isn't an issue.

I'd agree it's a clickbait title. This article is horribly titled and should be changed.

In all my English classes up through freshman year of college (even my mom that minored in English drilled this into my head) it was always taught to have a title that showcases what you're paper is about and then the first paragraph should be designed to grab the attention of the reader and provide all the pertinent information: who, what, when, where and why that makes your title legit. After the first paragraph it's then your job throughout the rest of the paper to drive home your idea to convince the reader that your paper is correct and they should believe your work.

It's become the acceptable norm these days to design a title that kind of touches on the information provided in the article, but more so to grab your attention simply so you click on it to produce traffic. Now that you've clicked on the article, the information provided isn't substantial to the reader nor does it actually really pertain to the title given. It's generally misleading or so vague, the only real reason behind the title is simply to get people to click on it - hence reason why folks would consider this title to be "clickbait".

"Buy an Oculus Quest 2 and Get Your Facebook Account Locked" - reading the title it leads the reader to believe that if you simply buy an Oculus Quest 2 that your Facebook account will be locked. However, reading through the article it kind of touches on the reason why your account could be locked. "Could" be locked and "Get Your Facebook Account Locked" simply by buying a Oculus Quest 2 are two very different things.

Sorry for the off topic, but folks posting here can do better. This isn't a shot at the OP, others that post news articles here are also to blame for click bait titles. Then again, maybe the problem is with me and I'm just reluctant to change, roll over and accept this is how the rest of the world now operates???

What do you expect? TPU news staff have ALWAYS been viewing VR with a strong negative bias, ever since 2016 when Vive and Rift CV1 first came out. They take every oppotunity they can to bash it or mock it. I have grown tired of arguing with comments in news sections for anything related to VR. Sensationalized title attracts VR haters who celebrate and parroting the "TOLD YA IT SUCKS" narrative.

I hope this changes in the near future. Quest 2 sales are very good atm. I can say I had one bad interaction with Oculus/FB, but that was only over not having access to the story for around 4 hours. I had no way to play any of my games for that period, but FB made it up with a $15 credit to my account. I bet all of the legitimate locked out accounts will be compensated with something similar. But honesty, most of the ones that I've seen were resolved after they verified their account. It's just security measures in place to circumvent spam and account hijackers. After I merged my Oculus account with my FB account i see no difference in how I use my Rift S or Quest 2. It's automatically turned off to not allow anyone to see your activity while using VR. Now you can turn it on for Friends or Friends and everyone if you want to see other people have VR as well, but they have to turn it on.

It might be an uphill battle but I'll keep fighting the good fight by promoting VR. This is the closest thing I have to a holodeck.. haha

EDIT: Just to be clear no one had access during that time but it was fixed. It was over a ssl cert had expired. I bet that doesn't happen again. well I don't know.. It's happened to me as well in the past.. lol So I understand and know shit happens.. lol I had an exchange server go down over that a few years ago due to accounting not paying it.. lol

So if I get this right, you can buy it but if you cannot log into your facebook account after linking the headset to it then it becomes a paperweight right.(and that is not a normal situation anyway) I'm pretty sure that you could just reset it somehow. Is it confirmed that its permanently linked and if it is wouldn't that also make it unsalable on the used market. I'm just going to keep rocking my samsung odyssey+ while waiting for a new odyssey or a new rift. (that hopefully does not do this) It really sucks for quest users though.

Quest 2's are not becoming paperweights due to account lock-outs... My Quest 2 is already better than my Rift S and it's wireless. I don't see the Rift coming back when the Quest/Quest 2 can do PCVR. I would not get an Odyssey+ unless it was really cheap due to the controllers. The Quest 2 controllers are much better in every way. Maybe a HP Reverb G2 at some point but I don't even see paying $599 for it with Quest 2 so close to its resolution.
