Latest Version of Ubuntu, Named 'Gutsy Gibbon', Boasts New Features

While the final version of 'Gutsy Gibbon' is not expected until late October at the earliest, the latest alpha shows some very nice new features. The most notable is a polished interface with which users can choose graphics drivers, install dual monitors, and set the default resolution. Gibbon will also have a special version of Firefox, which boasts a "plug-in finder wizard compatible with the software download mechanism apt, as well as with an integrated extensions manager." The printer management system also is getting an upgrade, as is the Gnome window management system. The beta Gnome 2.20 features a nicer desktop search, fast user switching, and a new security framework.

Yea, I downloaded Tribe 5 of this yesterday to fool around with it... it's pretty nice! It's still in Alpha, and it was pretty stable on the LiveCD for me. I think the beta comes out end of Sept or early Oct... if only Ubuntu could do my laptop's wireless and video... if only... lol

i have gusty gibbon tribe 4, it worked completely with my custom built comp. it should be able to work with your laptop's wireless and video, it comes with all the drivers built in, i didn't have to install anything at all. and you could probably the linux version of your laptop drivers online. the new features are preety sweet btw.

it's got a 8600M GT. but, i think something is wrong with it. in xp, it is AMAZING, but in vista, it artifacts and junk on just moving windows around, even with the laptopvideo2go updated drivers. then, half the time ubuntu doesn't get past the "loading gnome display adapter" segment. well, it gets past it and i can hear it load up, but the video cuts out. i can understand the linux stuff, but the vista artifacting is really getting to me.

Fiesty fawn doesn't work on mine. Doesn't like the IDE controller or network adapter. Maybe this one will.

Thanks for the heads up... I'll have to see what happens I get the board on Thursday... Guh I hate waiting.... Not like I'll see much of a performance increase being near none of my machines are overclocked anymore. But I'm sure it will fit to my e6420 nicely.

If I like the chipset I'll have to find another board for my Xeon system, but its going to take a pretty nice board... I love my P5B-Del.

You might want to check what wireless chipset you have against this list -- you might have one of those chipsets that refuses to release drivers or that has otherwise made its components completely incompatible with anything other than Windows.

What I really love (and what I hope most people will, to), is the new graphical interface for configuring the video card's interface with your system -- this is something Ubuntu has needed for a long, long time.

Thanks for that. I've had pretty awful luck w/ anything on my laptop, so I'm really hoping this new release will fix that graphics issue I'm having. All this trouble w/ the 8600M GT in Vista and Ubuntu almost makes me wish I had gone integrated! :roll:
