...so, let's be clear here: TPU reported on a breaking news item Wednesday 12:30, then updated the story at 16:30 as new information came to light, changing the story. The statement in the update also implicitly confirms that the initial report was true (at least to some degree), as there would be no need to "extend" production of reference boards if it wasn't planned to go EOL soon. Meanwhile, you apparently read this at some point ~27 hours later going by the timestamp of your "fake news" post, failed to read the entire article, and jumped in here to claim that it was somehow "fake news". Fake news is, by its definition, false or purposefully misleading content masquerading as news reporting, spread in order to affect public opinion, political views, etc. So you are claiming here that TPU is purposely spreading information they know to be false in order to ... make people dislike AMD? Drive traffic? I frankly have no idea what the purpose would be, nor how TPU would stand to gain anything whatsoever from such reporting. It's also about as serious an allegation as can be made towards any news outlet - that they are, on purpose, spreading information they know to be untrue. If they did, that would make everything they ever reported on fundamentally suspect. Of course this isn't an accurate assessment whatsoever, as it entirely ignores the fact that the article makes it perfectly clear that this was a developing situation, and that the ultimate outcome was different than the initial report. What more do you want?

Wait, what? The title is intentionally misleading false information? Don't be daft. The title is inaccurate when taking the current state of affairs into consideration, sure, but that is nowhere close to fulfilling any reasonable definition of "fake news", as that requires an intent to mislead - otherwise it's just plain inaccurate.

The title was an accurate representation of the contents of the report in question when the article was written, and while there have been developments since, there's no obligation on TPU to change the title after the fact when developments render this information inaccurate. The update to the article is more than sufficient in this regard, and for anyone only reading the title and not the article and then getting the wrong impression? That's on them. One should never, ever make assumptions or come to a conclusion based on headlines alone. That is primary school level media literacy.

... do I really need to spell this out to you this clearly? The title was accurate when the article was published. The statement from AMD confirms this, as there would otherwise be no need for them to extend the production run of these cards - if they weren't planning to end it soon, the statement would be that "we have no plans to discontinue these SKUs in the near future" or something to the same effect. Instead, they said "hey, sorry, we see that you like our GPUs, so we'll keep making them". Your example would thus only be comparable if AMD had actually done so, but later changed their minds. (And if so, that would surely be huge news, no matter if they changed their minds, right?) See the difference? Stop spreading FUD. There's nothing wrong with the reporting here.

That wouldn't be accurate either. The question mark would then imply that the content is speculative, which it wasn't. The initial report was factual, based on several sources confirming the same information. Going by your logic all headlines with information that is yet to be officially confirmed would need to be formulated as speculation, which ... isn't how facts work. Official confirmation is not needed to establish something as factual. TPU reported the known facts of a developing, breaking-news story, then updated the story as further developments happened. That the title reflects the initial report is arguably a good thing: if media outlets changed their published articles all willy-nilly, that would be a troubling development, as you could never trust that what you read and what someone else read at another time was the same report.

And again: this has no relation whatsoever to the concept of fake news. None.

The title accurately reflects the reality as of the time when the article was written, and the further developments are clearly detailed in the article itself. If you can't be bothered to read the article (regardless if that's due to being in a hurry or something else) that's not TPU's fault. The update is clearly visible from the front page, as well as noted right next to the publication time/date.

I hadn't spotted that that wasn't real (though I did think the number sounded unrealistic for a single shipping container), but again, where is your evidence that it was made or posted to intentionally mislead people? Jokes aren't made with the intention for people to believe they are true beyond the "fooled you" punchline, and if everyone is in on it (such as with April's fools, or I assume this Spanish fool's day) it is entirely expected that the contents are untrue without that making them any kind of fake news. Nobody is meant to believe them, and nobody is trying to manipulate anyone else into believing something in order to affect their opinion or similar. If someone unwittingly repeats a satirical post or one written to fool people in a commonly accepted humorous context such as this, then they have egg on their face for believing the joke, but it by no means qualifies as fake news.

I really don't understand how this is difficult to grasp. Unless the news piece is intentionally fabricated in order to mislead someone into changing (or cementing) an opinion (typically political, though arguably everything is political), it is by definition not fake news. Period. Intentionally misleading for humorous effect? Not fake news. True, and disseminated to change or cement opinions? Not fake news. News reports made in good faith of events that turn out to not be true, whatever the reason? Not fake news.

For what seems like the millionth time: unless the author of the article knew this to be false at the time of posting it, and indented for the article to sway people's opinions in some way, this does not qualify as fake news. An honest mistake does not make fake news.

... no, and? Did I ever say it was? Does that have any bearing on it being fake news or not? You don't seem to be able to grasp the core issue here: something being factually wrong does not make it fake news. Can you please just accept that - that "fake news" is a term with a specific meaning, which has been repeated several times here - so we can all move on?

We all make mistakes. Journalists included. Making a mistake and reporting on false or misunderstood information does not make that report fake news, as that requires it to be intentionally misleading in order to change or cement people's opinions. An error is an error, not fake news.
