The Nintendo Switch was announced by Nintendo in October 2016 before releasing worldwide in March 2017. The hybrid console has been well-received and is now on track to become one of if not the best selling console of all time. Nintendo recently revealed during a financial report that the console had sold 79.87 million units after 46 months on the market. This compares favorably with the PS4 at ~67 million, the PS2 at ~69.5 million, and the Wii at ~75 million units at 46 months after their releases. When compared to Nintendo's other consoles only the DS manages to outsell the Switch at ~83 million units sold 46 months after release. The Nintendo Switch has eclipsed the Wii U in sale numbers which only reached ~13.3 million.

Kind of weird, I don't know anyone with a Switch, they're basically non existent where I live. I bet a lot of these sales come from Asia.

I also haven't seen any Switch in the wild back when I was commuting to university/work. It's a fun concept but I wouldn't touch it unless they'd release an updated one with more processing power (which they probably won't).

It's hybrid. Basically the 3DS got discontinued so some people go for NSW instead, something that didn't happen until recently. Maybe that's why it's got some strong sales.
Also, 13 Nintendo game series titles already got their best sales for NSW (ports or new) including Animal Crossing, Zelda, Hyrule, Mario, Mario Kart and others, and that's a strong sales point for NSW too. In Greece it's also nowhere to be seen but as an owner I completely understand why it's selling so well.
Hell, I can even hack it and install android and play a million games via emulator, steam from my PC or PS4 or even play native android games using hardware buttons.
It's by far the best gaming console I've ever had. And I also own a PS1, PS2, Gamenoy Color, Advance, Advance SP, 2DS, 3DS, PS4...
It's right on its way to overthrone even NDS.

Imagine what will happen if we eventually get an NSW pro with updated Nvidia GPU that will support DLSS...

" Best selling console"
Totally exaggerated, nothing ever close to 2000's Sony Playstation 2 in term of console and Nintendo DS in handheld category.

What surprises me is how well all consoles sell five years after the launch.

Deteriorating price and newly emerged games attracting people to bought one.

It has actually sold more units than PS2 for the same amount of time in stores (46 weeks).

Is it a console or a handheld? The lite version is definitely a handheld/portable.

I'm shocked at the number of people here who don't know someone who has one. I'm related to two people who spent at least half of 2020 trying to get their hands on a standard(non-lite) Switch. My son(18 years old) has one, he loves it.

I don't care for the standard controllers(joycons) they too small and flimsy feeling. I'm really impressed with how much they manage to get from what is essentially a tablet processor. Despite that, I feel both models are way overpriced for what you get in the way of hardware, Nintendo is definitely making fat profits on it. The accessories are also insanely expensive.

The Switch lite isn't bad at $199. Practically the cost of tablet. Honestly the pricing seems very reasonable considering what you get and there's nothing else out there that offers the same and they can't price it to low as than the returns in profit wouldn't be that good. All in all you get a device that can Stream, Browse, and play games. My only problem is the lack of AAA games likely because the hardware is underpowered.

Hopefully with rumors going around we actually get a Nintendo Switch 2 with a Zen CPU and RDNA2 GPU similar to the Xbox Series S than it will be a force to be reckoned with. Likely it would be a Tegra X1+ though

IMO, the 5.5" screen on a Nintendo Switch lite is more like the size of a phone. I haven't been hands-on with one yet, but I've read it's much worse than the original with garbage viewing angles and washed out colors. Everyone I know opted to get the real version. You know the reason it's named the switch, because it switches from a handheld to a console.

I did some googling found out the margins are actually slimmer than you would assume on the Switch. No information seems to be readily available for the Lite version. Apparently, Nintendo makes less than $50 a unit of the standard Switch. This seems insanity to me, knowing what most companies pay to manufacture similar devices. I would guess the Switch costs $100 maybe $150 tops to build, based on build prices for tablets and phones. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Ngreedia is ripping them off on the silicon. Then again, is it a rip off when no one else sells a comparable chip?

Your first statement becomes null as like you said you read it somewhere. I actually have a Switch lite and Switch and when gaming on the lite you don't notice the size difference unless you have both side by side. The whole point of the Lite is to be more portable. Yes the Switch was portable but it was also heavier, battery life was ok, and the size made it where you couldn't fit it every where. The lite I can slide in side pockets or similar thanks to its smaller profile

I guess when a company focuses on making a unique console gaming experience and not trying to replicate PC gaming on inferior hardware, it actually works.

Awesome! I've also owned one since day one, and we gave our son a Switch lite for Christmas, he loves being able to bring minecraft and among us with him on long trips.

The only complaint I have is, the joycon drift is getting bad on my OG model, I've replaced the joystick on one of the joycon a, but it was a tedious affair, don't wanna do it again for the other joycon, so I had to buy a couple more joycons on sale last black friday.

Other than that, I love the system, I don't think I've put as much play time on any other of my consoles, as my family loves playing multiplayer games while docked, and I can bring it along with me and even play a little when I'm not busy.

It's a fun little console, and it has a fantastic game library, IDK what the fixation with cramming more power into it is, and yes, this coming from someone with a capable gaming PC.

I can wait for Nintendo to update it when the hardware is ready, in the meantime, there's a lot of awesome games on this platform, and at $199 or $299 for the bigger version, trust me, you're doing yourself a disservice by not trying it.

a Monopoly in the Handheld Console Market.. No surprise here..

Sony made a big mistake pulling the plug off its PSP.
it would have been a serious contender and a choice for the gamers.
instead of sony making rare smartphones, they need to bring back PSP to compete against Switch.

Sony released the Vita after the PSP, still an impressive piece of kit, with many great games, but then they killed it too... At least you can collect games for cheap for it now.

Sony should be as committed to their portable platform as they are to their home consoles, then they would really pose a threat to Nintendo.

I've got an OG Switch. Was able to snag one off Amazon for MSRP about 3/4 through 2020. Was hard to find for quite a while with quarantine. Just about all I use it for is playing a Mario Kart drinking game with my buddies online (docked in console mode), although I binged Legend of Zelda: BoTW pretty hard and did bring it to work a few nights when I was just babysitting our server backups to kill time. Might consider flipping it and picking up the rumored refreshed model if they offer high refresh rate support.

Thanks for nullifying my statement, I'm sure I'll see one at some point. Then I will be entitled to my own opinion or maybe not...

I also read shortly after my posting the other day that Nintendo has recently revised both the Switch and Switch Lite LCDs. They are supposedly considerably better quality than the originals. I only read that though, so it's null as well.
