I can get an MSI Ventus 3X RTX 3090 for as "little" as $1790...
Not seen any 3080's in stock for over a week, except that one card yesterday that was sold 30 seconds later.
3070's comes and goes, usually available for under $680.
The only 3060Ti's I saw was listed for as much as the 3070's.
Not seen any AMD cards in stock for over a month.
All the larger e-tailers have zero stock of anything over a GTX 1650Ti...

Edit: Oh, hang on there, there's an MSI RX 6900XT Gaming Trio in stock, for $1,310.

a quoted price for something that isnt available should not count.. its too low which is why the item is not available..

to count as a true price an item has to be available.. as i see it Ebay is the only true price discovery mechanism at the moment with stuff actually available.. everything else is just pie in the sky..

i use ebay a lot.. both to buy and sell stuff.. if something is priced too high on ebay it dosnt sell if its priced too low it disappears super quick..

by my reckoning the price of something should be based on what people are prepared to pay for it.. in a free market price is governed by simple supply and demand..

the good side of a free market is that stuff (at a true price) is always available.. the bad side is that what is available goes only to those who can afford to pay more..

all this talk of scalpers come from those who dont believe in free markets with true price discovery or those who simply cannot afford to pay the true price.. basically its total nonsense and belongs in a

communist totalitarian state controlled world.. the fact that Americans are spouting this scalper sh-t does make me wonder..

there are more than one way to pay more.. one way is more money another way is more time and effort put into obtaining the item in short supply and then again there is simple luck.. but often these lucky people simply resell the item for something closer to the real price.. :)

I'd get screwed by VAT difference when placing order (16% vs 23% in Poland). Either way deep in mind I remember that those 6800 XT's should be in €800 price range so I refuse to give in.

I'm just unable to get the GPU I want at the moment, I just have to wait, thereby I'm not in a rush because my 2070 Super still runs anything I throw at it.

I couldn't find that when I looked for the same price so damn

they sill have some good deals relative to current graphics card prices.. pre built systems seem to have been all planned and priced way back before graphics cards reached their current silly price levels.. which in my book makes them a good deal.. especially so for someone wanting a complete system..

i just see this scenario getting worse from now on in.. it will be interesting seeing just how high prices can go.. :)

trog

ps.. assuming a price should be based on what a market will bear nvidia quoted rrp prices are or were way too low.. the reason for this i think are..

they knew they would not be able to meet market demand.. knowing this they deliberately set a price way too low relative to what the market would bear..

they did this to damage amd and severely restrict the prices amd could charge for their yet to be announced offerings..

the bottom line being the whole rrp thing was a con.. review sites fell for the con hook line and sinker and a fake rrp pice was established with nvidia earning lots of brownie points..

3090s don't seem scalped here in Norway. Plenty of stock for MSRP for various models. Even the 3090 Strix I bought only took a week from purchase to shipped. Was going to just go for the 3080 seeing as it's less than half the price, but the one I bought literally a minute after launch still hadn't arrived last month so I cancelled it and picked up a 3090 instead.

3080s and down though are hopeless. There are still people who bought the Strix 3080 from launch day that haven't gotten theirs... Komplett, the biggest etailer, has just stopped selling all 30 series cards and AMD 5000 series cards. You just can't even put in an order for any of them. Proshop still has orders up though and a public table of the statistics. 3090s are all with the oldest order in February or January, while the others are all last year.

I'm guessing it might have something to do with the Chinese new year now as nothing is getting shipped?
Shipping as been an issue as well but not the main culprit; US has imported more goods from China in 2020 than any other year in history. Late this fall all the shipping carriers drastically increased rates to beat the Chinese new year, our own shipping costs doubled per container. Containers are another issue as a heavy demand for them created a large amount of empty containers in US & European. The scarcity of empty containers in China slowed down imports while maxing out storage facilities waiting on containers to ship goods; literally our goods were turned around from several warehouses because they were at max capacity. All these goods coming in helped create a back up or ships off the just of southern Cali as port of LB and LA struggled to move all the containers. FYI, the Chinese have been buying ports in Greece to help speed up their goods into Europe.

It's not a quoted price, it's products that are in stock in a local shop here.
The shops here are getting stock of things every few days, but they sell out quickly, as I guess the locals buy them and flog them with a profit in eBay or something similar.

The problem isn't necessarily the scalpers. The problem is the people who will pay 2x to 3x MSRP for these products. These scalpers are just people who have discovered a market segment with very high demand.

These people are showing that reselling GPUs for extreme markups is a sustainable business model. If people stopped buying from scalpers, they'd be forced to reduce prices in order to sell their inventory.

Regulation really shouldn't be the answer, but some markets are just too stupid to regulate themselves.

free markets always regulate themselves.. its in the nature of things.. the problem here was nvidias attempt at creating a fake market price for an item they knew they could not supply..

Here in Poland gpu prices in 2020 were decent up to autumn. RX580 8GB: 900-1200pln (depending on aib), 5700xt: 1800-2400pln. When big navi got released 6800xt was 3900-4600pln. Now? 580 costs around 2000pln, 5700xt is 5500pln(!!!!!) and 6800xt 6000-6500pln. Prices i'm listing here are from one of biggest shops with electronics in the country. This is insane.

I wanted to buy 6800xt but decided to wait until it will drop under 4000pln and in the meantime i'm mining on my single 580 when my pc doesn't do anything demanding like gaming or video encoding. Since november with such casual mining i made 0.1eth (at the moment it is around 160eur/190usd/135gbp) so far. Nothing spectacular but kinda free extra money or future investment.

If you're spending that much money, you might as well get a 6900 instead as they seem to be about $2200 and get the extra performance, I'm actually surprised there's any 3070's in stock anywhere, but 3080's seem to be almost non-existent

6900XT are $1,999 here, so a bit cheaper but still going to cost a kidney.

the AMD higher end GPU's 6800xt/6900xt are the hardest to get now in the US. Nvidia cards are more available. i needed a 6800xt for a job, but the closest i could come was a 3080, luckily the swap was acceptable , otherwise id still be trying

Interesting as I only really saw them in stock at the higher price at most of the major Aus e-tailers when I had a brief look

People are buying them from scalpers to mine as long as the purchase price from the scalper is still less than expected cash flow from mining. Scalpers are exploiting illegitimate back room buddy-deals from unscrupulous employees at Microcenters and other resellers, intercepting these cards before they ever get to the shelves.

incidentally the ready built PC i picked up for £1750 whilst looking at 3080 ebay prices is now priced at £2350.. its due for delivery tomorrow.. the seller seems to have caught up with the price curve.. :)

trog

ps.. people are not just buying these things to mine they are buying them to resell at a profit.. anybody lucky enough to get their hands on one at anywhere near the rrp would be silly not to..

i paid a month old scalper price of £1045 for one.. i dont need the cash else for sure it would go straight on ebay .. a quick £700 or £800 profit would be hard to resist for most people..

i have paid a total of £2800 for one complete gaming machine and one 3080 gpu.. if i so wished i could bung both cards on ebay for the going £1750 quid each.. make a profit of £700 quid and get a free PC thrown in..
