Maybe you are right but on the other hand what you are saying is all speculation and looking for a reason why.
If there is a reason, it might be totally different than memory limitations or SoC limitations.
Sooner or later, somebody will come up with a unlocked bios or mod the board and hopefully we will be able to know, how much more you can get from these cards.
Maybe AMD locked them so that these wont exceed the power consumption too much and go overboard with it. This is valid since these cards do not gobble that much power. efficiency would be gone otherwise.
On the second thought about voltage, as 6800XT uses same 7nn technology as 6900XT in theory it should be able to go higher on voltages like 6900XT where we have 1175mV vs 1150mV so it would be interesting if somebody can unlock 6800XT voltage slider to accept settings like 6900XT.

On the VRAM as I mentioned last time, I have read lot of forums and see that lot of 6800XT and 6900XT out there cannot even reach 2150MHz so there I wonder about the quality of Samsung memory chips.
Maybe also for memory higher voltage setting will help.
I played yesterday again with memory frequency settings and I can confirm again that on my 6800XT if I set VRAM frequency higher than 2100MHz the Time Spy Score goes down by about 200 points already for 2120MHz setting.
For VRAM setting of 2150MHz Time Spy goes down to 19200 range from 19800 range at 2100MHz. :(

On Igor's Lab forum there is the RED BIOS REBELLION group that are already working on unlocking the bios. Until now they were not successful but maybe in the very near future.
This also the group behind the creation of MPT as well.

I don't doubt the voltage block but I'm not sure why AMD has locked the cards so severely.
If the 6800Xt could hit voltage limit like the 6900xt, the 6800xt would have clocked higher than the 6900xt for sure if, of course, the frequency was not locked as well.
I think the biggest problem is the ram here. AMD locked the chip due to the memory that is not the best and if everything would have been unlocked, the memory would have been the problem.

So basically, higher frequency on a mem 2150 score goes down. I think the memory is the bottleneck here and AMD locked the cpus because of this.

So when one looks at the configurations of the 6900XT Toxic where Sapphire claims to be the fastest 6900XT, you can see they also use VRAM 2135MHz.
So it could be very well the VRAM is not able to achieve much higher as also many user are experiencing.

Below is table for Sapphire 6900XT Toxic Limited edition.
You can see the VRAM in Toxic Boost mode set to 2135MHz and it also gives indication for maximum achievable GPU frequency on 6900XT of 2666MHz.
This would be like around 2715MHz setting is Radeon Software. I am not sure what voltage Sapphire uses to achieve these high GPU boost.
It would be nice to find out if they undervolt their 6900XT Toxic to lower than 1175mV. :p

In the article which is in German they mention that Sapphire allows 332W core GPU to achieve this boost. That is similar to what I did with Red Devil. :p
It seems these are good binned chips that they use as they can go higher. My Red Devil achieved only max boost of 2640MHz with similar power settings.

I really need to check how far can my go. With the core and the memory. Probably similar to what you have achieved with the 6900xt red devil.

I was doing some reading about this Sapphire Toxic Limited Edition that I linked above.
It seems that Sapphire has cherry picked chips as they are doing some promises regarding the boost and performance. :p
Looks interesting but I think an expensive card as it is also limited to number of samples they will produce:

It says I should ensure I'm running dual channel, I searched as much as I could, but I really can't find the setting in the bios. It's running 3600mhz 14CL as it's supposed to.

With 100% load on the CPU, it became 72 degrees celsius (161 degrees fahrenheit), I'm running a 3600X with a be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler. Is that normal? Mostly just wandering if I added the correct amount of paste.
Dual channel Ram is not a Bios setting, it requires at least two sticks of Ram, in the appropriate slots and it will be set automatically, also your temps are good.

The ram is placed in slot #2+4 counting from the cpu - That is as far as I know, the correct way of placing them.
Linus Tech Tips have mentioned something about a bios setting, I'm quite sure that's people who didn't activate dual channel mode, but ofcause, my memory is not perfect.
I will try check up on it.

Dal channel is enabled automatically if you have at least 2 matching sticks in the right positions, so in your case 2-4, or alternatively 1-3 is dual channel. (1-3 or 2-4 is the norm, some boards might go for 1-2, 3-4, but that's rare) Also, some boards have a preferred position for dual channel, as in, 2-4 before 1-3, but you can find that in the motherboards manual. I have not seen any board that would allow you to disable or enable dual channel in years, long ago there where some.

Great video. I could picture all the Nvidia fanboys gathering up their pitchforks while watching it
I am expecting Nvidia to send some ninjas after Steve soon, to deliver another letter about their "editorial direction"

That's why I love Steve, he's not afraid to point out nVidia's shortcomings, though I take it this vid was more for edification than anything else. Let's wait and see, nVidia doesn't like it when their cards are featured in a unfavorable light, so they might respond.....

I think there's not even one company that would like to see their products being shown in a bad light. Wonder what's NV going to do about it. Threats or some product stack adjustments?
Linus rammed NV for their crypto GPU as well. He wasn't as conservative in his choice of words like Steve was.
For those who are interested and haven't seen it.

Sorry 'bout the mix up, I'd meant I'd seen Linus ripping nVidia a new one over their threat to Steve at the time Steve reached out to LTT last year when the controversy broke out. This one about CMP and basically nVidia bamboozling peeps with their CMP not affecting GPU nonsense. Gotta give it to nVidia's PR and Marketing Division, real they're apex level spin doctors!

Is it just me or does the 6800XT have some seriously rich video settings. Everything seems to be brighter and colours richer.

Assuming you come from an Nvidia card, there is an urban legend that says Nvidia's color compression screws with image quality, and even though AMD also has some compression, its not that strong. I have seen posts with people switching between Nvidia and AMD and reporting similar things, but I have not personally experienced that, so cant comment on how true this is, and the internet is full of ....

I am coming from a Vega 64 and 5700. I have no idea about the internet though as I like to prove things for myself as well.

Recently got my 6800xt reference card. Paired with a 3900x with an auto-overclock. GPU running at stock speeds.

Getting lower scores than usual. Did I just get a bad card or something?

At stock speeds its about right (stock settings are very conservative), the 6800XT really shines when overclocked, and from what I saw from others, have yet to see a "bad" card. I would suggest, if you want to go that route, try some simple OC, like in Wattman set Max Frequency to 2550 or 2600 Mhz, leave voltage at 1150, put memory at 2100 Mhz, put the fans at max and see what score you get with that. The reference cooler can keep those clocks, only that it might get a bit loud.

Awesome! Thanks for the advice. I'll try it out.

I'm not exactly sure what changed, but this has been my highest graphics score in Time Spy so far. Maybe it's the weather. :D

Not bad. :D
This is actually inline with my score for stable setting.
For daily stable setting I get score between 19750 to 19800 range it varies time to time maybe with weather.
