Well I'll admit, I cherry-picked this game. But other modern titles follow a similar trend, such as RDR2, AC Valhalla, MSFS, etc. putting the 1080 Ti between a 2070 and a 2070 Super in performance. Hardly remarkable, and that's coming from someone who owns an RTX 2060 Super.

Honestly I would have agreed with you as I have done so for the last decade and often upgraded cards every 3 years or so. Had the 3080 stuck to it's MSRP I may have sold and upgraded. With lack of availability and price gauging it's allowed me to spend a little more time observing whether something better is a requirement or is it just feeding the performance enthusiast in me. For me i've decided it's the latter (subjectively speaking). This is not a one-fit-for-all-shoe hence it does boil down to individual preference and as you rightly suggest specific games.

It's been a weird time for me... esp with the Covid lockdowns, job termination, side-business collapse, etc (but doing okay). I'm just re-evaluating how I spend, getting my finances in order, trimming off added luxuries and saving on bills wherever I can. Upgrading hardware falls in the same boat. To-date i've always been an impulsive buyer, just wanting the best hardware possible but it's not always been necessary. It would have been a different story had CP2077 or CO were the go-to games for me but far from it, anything I'm currently playing at the mo is being easily chewed up by the 1080 TI - frankly put 100fps+ "high-end performance" whilst preserving top quality settings. I don't mind compromising on quality settings too as long as i'm not forced to drop below the "Highs". Granted if I get onboard with these newer games demanding greater rendering juice... i'd pull the trigger.

I still can't get over the CB2077 1440p (ultra) benchmarks... even the $800+ (MSRP) newer cards struggle to celebrate "high-end". The good thing being, i tend to avoid newer games as I'm a complete mess with time management. Once im on, there's no getting off... at times 4-6 hours of play flat-out. Now multiply that by 10, .... 40-60 hours listening to the wife nagging - nah can't do it anymore lol. Definitely not getting any younger.

Of course! As YouTuber Steve from Gamers Nexus always says, upgrade when the performance no longer works for you, otherwise appreciate what you already have.

The 1080 Ti is an excellent card. It just isn't a "beast" anymore. It can handle plenty of recent games, just not at 4K with max settings.

Personally I don't care about raytracing at all, so nothing to lose there. And I haven't played CP2077 practically at all, tried it with 980 Ti, ran okay with 1080p/medium. I also still wait that the game is truly fixed as still some people report more or less about its problems.

Everything else what I play, runs at 1080p60 without any problems.

I'm sorry, but what's the point of this thread, besides flexing?! Especially after that thread about hardware elitism the other day?
Yeah i know i'm blabbering along without reason but atleast i'm doing it with my TPU tech family as my real one/mates don't give a crap about PC gaming hardware :)
This.

Flexing would be babbling on and on about the 3 3090's a person has and belittling folks who cannot afford that. (which is what the elitism post was essentially about)

It's a a bizarre concept to be stashing videocards for later use, would you have ever considered doing this, say, three years ago?
Except for that one day you come across the Youtube vid that states "Guess what you can do with your old VooDoo card"!

This is a bit where I come unstuck on forums and butt heads with people. I can appreciate that for some they could 100% care less about it (and things like DLSS too), but I am all about the latest and greatest visuals and rendering techniques. At a guess I'd say 50% of my 'gaming' time is spent checking out visuals, tweaking settings, messing with clocks etc etc, then I get the game running/looking beaut and barely finish half of them :p

This is definitely not a dig at you whatsoever, I fully respect your stance on it and specifically the way you've phrased it using the word personally, but for someone like me these features are extremely enticing and I even got a bit of fomo with Turing when I stuck with the GTX1080, but it worked out for me in the end. It's just a touchy subject when some out there argue so passionately against these things like nobody should/could want them and they're worthless, but that isn't the case for people like me, I want all the new and shiny - pun intended.

I'd say it's here to stay. It has been in offline 3d rendering for some time now, and now that is performant enough to breach into real-time rendering (eg gaming), we have both Nvidia and AMD and the new/current generation consoles supporting it too, which seems like the industry betting on it being here to stay. The hardware will need to go through many more revisions before it's just a commonplace setting and a 'given' so to speak though.

Meh, I can appreciate your stance as well, but visuals are not fun for me. They don’t provide any enjoyment on their own. I play games for the story, supported by good gameplay. Visuals are just an enhancer for me.

That's exactly it isn't it, and I appreciate the game aspects you talk of too, after all I enjoy gaming for the game itself, but I am through and through a graphics junkie, and to me those features do provide enjoyment on their own.

Neither opinion or preference is wrong in the slightest, but where my jimmies get rustled is by people making sweeping arguments against such features as if they speak for everyone, we've all seen it. I get the distinct impression such people lack good people skills, or at least effective communication skills.

I play at 1440p and bought a 1080 TI in 2017. At the time of purchase (on an electrifying impulse) I regretted forking out £700 which was way beyond the initial budget. I was a sucker for benchmarks and going 1440p for the first time put a dent in the savings.

.....almost 4 years later..... IT WAS THE BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE! lol

For a brisk moment I was considering the RTX 3080 as per the usual 3-4 year upgrade.... but I'm glad these cards are hardly available or overpriced to stop the impulsive monkey in me. It helped to realise the 1080 TI is still an absolute monster at 1080p/1440p esp in real-world visual perceptions opposed to enticing benchmarks which needlessly feeds the FPS crave. I'm back on gaming more regularly now and it still handles everything and anything I throw at it at the best of settings or a soft mix to hit 100-120fps without compromising visual quality. I guess it would be nice to hit 144/165fps (the displays max) with a 3080 but I'm now convinced its just dispensable enthusiasm for small returns in noticeable benefit.

Anyway I've finally settled with sticking with the 1080 TI until next Gen. Yeah i know i'm blabbering along without reason but atleast i'm doing it with my TPU tech family as my real one/mates don't give a crap about PC gaming hardware :)

What about you 1080 TI owners @ 1080p/1440p.... what are your thoughts? Any compelling arguments to go 3080 when/if prices return to reasonable purpose? Not bothered about RT for the time being.

There will be no next gen. Mining is here to stay this time and there will always be a alt coin to mine. The bots will get more sophisticated as well. Enjoy your 1080 ti for a few more years.

Of course there will eventually be a next gen of GPU's. What their MSRP pricing structure and availability will be at that MSRP might be grim though.

I thought you didn't have any faith in cryptocurrency? If the market crashes, surely mining will slow down. It won't disappear completely, but a lot of it will go away.

oh? no i simply think it's terrible for environment when they say bitcoin mining uses a few countries worth of electricity that's nothing when you add in all the tokens and alt coins infrastructure and mining etc. i imagine it's more like 20 countries combined - we are destroying the Earth. we were even before cryptocurrency but this is accelerating it exponentially.

i don't think it will crash this time. too many big banks and investment firms are using it now. just makes me sad. its w.e though. meh

Visuals are almost everything for me as in

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

but without a story they are wasted.

I go hiking for the visuals more than the exercise.

I am. I have been gaming a very long time. Everything since then is a bonus on visuals. Very nice attempt to sharpshoot me, though. Visuals are the last element I consider when evaluating a game. Are they a nice enhancement and appreciated? Sure thing. But they aren’t a dealbreaker or deal maker for me.

This. I still play NES/PS1/PS2 games and as long the game is good, better graphics are just a bonus thing.

I still play Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Hexen Beyond Heretic & DOOM wads, CS 1.6... Graphics are a nice bonus to me, but not necessary. If I have fun in a game that's what matters.

Graphics take about 30% of the total score to me and I wouldn't play any game that score 70% or less, so yeah game Graphics kinda matter.
Take CP2077 for example, that game would be a 60% but impressive graphics easily boost its score to over 80% (85% on metacritic)
So naturally RayTracing would add about 10% to the game score, or even 20% if done correctly like CP2077.

Call me picky but I don't really have time nor willingness to play every fun game out there LOL, just choosing great ones to sink some time into.

Cyberpunk got a lot of the graphics (and GPU torture) but lacks everything that makes a game a game

I would say the graphics and music are CP2077's major saving graces, I still play the games just to drive around the city, enjoying the view and listening to the radio.

Music is definitely a big plus
