Lesson 1: USB and 1394 headers are keyed the same
Lesson 2: USB and 1394 are not electrically compatible
Lesson 3: Plugging your thumb drive into a USB port that's connected to 1394 will turn said thumb drive into an expensive, inert keychain.

I lost two thumb drives before I figured out what was going on. :banghead:

Huh, I wonder if you could claim warranty on that? I've had a few thumb drives killed (i.e. damaged) by friends & family ~ not my fault I lent them :shadedshu:

Interesting. It's not often that incompatible things are keyed the same.

Been so long that I never heard IEEE 1394 got to google it so find out its firewire. Those still exist on current motherboards? I guess "fire" in the firewire is name appropriate here pardon the pun. I am sorry that you lost those usb stick, I hope nothing important is in them :(

Hm, that interesting, i never used firewire, but i had some usb/fw back bracket. But still always needed just usb (in my case).
Btw, on next time make sure, you are using Lesson 0: check your motherboard's manual.

Firewire absolutely does not exist on current motherboards. This was on an X58 machine. "Important" stuff? Not really. I have a backup image of the one around; there shouldn't be too much on it that isn't easily recoverable. The other was just a Win7 boot stick. Silver lining: I didn't actually pay for either one. The 16GB was a gift, and the 8GB I salvaged (along with a handful of others) from work.

Huh, I wonder if you could claim warranty on that? I've had a few thumb drives killed (i.e. damaged) by friends & family ~ not my fault I lent them :shadedshu:

Ha! Even outside of user error, everything is so far out of warranty that the RMA department might charge me for wasting their time. :p

Well the newer AsRock boards seem to be keyed totally different now.

How ever the addon brackets are keyed the same, thats why i always follow the wire from the bracket to which one is which hehe, o yeah Mobo tells you which is firewire and USB.

^^ THIS ^^

When in doubt, whip it out, hahaha :)

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but IMHO, if you don't know the difference between 1394 & USB ports or are too lazy to look it up beforehand , then perhaps you should not be using computers.....

It was an honest mistake.. they are keyed the same.. it could happen to anyone, especially if its late when you put the rig together.

Rest assured, I know the difference; not my first rodeo. When the headers are laid out like this, and you're in a hurry and/or not paying attention, though... Well, let's just say we all carry the idiot ball at some point or other. :)
