Intel Books Two 3 nm Processor Orders at TSMC Manufacturing Facilities

Apple sits on money, Intel spend theirs
Yeah right, you think Apple beat the sh!t out of Intel, with M1, using marketing slides

Intel has been sitting on its backside for the better part of an entire decade & pretty much saw anyone even semi competent move past them, AMD with probably 0.1x their R&D budget! If Intel would win any awards it'd be how to lose nearly each & every performance metric it had an unassailable lead over a decade back ~ in other words the world's most expensive hare :slap:

This has nothing to do with money, or Apple or anything of the sort, everyone is missing the main factor on why this is probably not gonna happen : Intel has proven to be either inept at adopting new manufacturing processes, be it theirs or someone else's, or unwilling to do so.

They've sacrificed years of progress in order to maintain 14nm output and they've only recently barely managed to scrape enough 10nm volume for a couple of relevant products and I am to believe they'll have not 5nm but 3nm chips by next year ? Right...

So, TSMC will screw its long time partners for Intel, this continue to seems to me like BS story.
Not at all, Intel will get their 3nm once everybody else is on 1nm. :D

I've mentioned this before and I will again; any company migrating can kiss their competitive edge goodbye! Those ramps aren't one off runs, the foundry builds on validated ip blocks.

10mm3mm cup coasters anyone? :D

Im not comfortable with the most leading edge technology is produced next to china. Western world needs to wake up. Your technology, your research and development but others is eating your cake because they can afford much more lower wages and infrastructure.

All part of the bigger picture.
Thanks for the article, although i'm not sure what the bigger picture is. Intel keep expanding its manufacturing, it's well known.
TSMC giving large chunks of its cutting edge node to them, seems even sillier.
The last paragraph in the article is comedy gold. TSMC would agree to that, because?

No, I'm absolutely right, over 102% positively correct. Intel does indeed spend their money, for plants, equipment, training, billions and billions of US dollars for fab's all over the world - and they just KEEP ON SPENDING and investing in people, property, factories and JOBS.
I don't place much value a company that values patents for a STAIRWAY more than they do jobs.

Apple patented this, United States Patent: D478999 (uspto.gov).

Looks like ordinary stairs. Lol

Lol "he expects Intel to use them as "gap fillers for some of the highest performance".

Intel: Make My Chips!

What would be even funnier if Intel contacted TSMC just to stymie the volume going to AMD? Two birds with one stone.

Intel "lost market share to NV", seriously, guys?

Apparently they have secured even higher capacity than Apple . This is huge news and could be a real obstacle to AMD execution plan .
This sounds as if Apple's orders were bigger than AMD's.
They are not, not even remotely, AMD is times bigger a customer for TSMC.

USPO is a disgrace of this planet.

AMD has the better tech and their market share is limited by manufacturing capacity
I doubt it.
To me, as a person who is trying to buy a decent AMD notebook, it is obvious, that OEMs are still gatekeeping, as it was back in the Athlon times.

Check Intel financials, with their crappy product lineup they are still shoveling money.
That's because DIY is just 16% of the CPU market. Oh, and that's only desktop CPU market, cough.

Lol intel is the biggest silicon provider in the world. Whats amd next to intel lol its a tiny company

Epyc destroys Xeon in the datacenter outside of niche AI or other weird AVX workloads, pretty much the same thing in the workstation and enthusiast desktop market. With mobile since thats the only place Intel is remotely close, Tiger Lake is generally pretty competitive but benchmarks show Ryzen is still better overall. The laptop market has lot of design and supply momentum on Intel platforms so most of the really good designs still go to Intel but thats Starting to change with AMD specific designs.

AMD sells everything they make though, this isn't really debatable but Intel is several times bigger than AMD in many ways but most specific to this discussion in manufacturing capacity. If Intel somehow magically vanished tomorrow it would take AMD and TSMC the better part of half a decade to fill in the missing capacity. AMD can affect Intel's margins a bit when they have better products but there is still plenty of profit for Intel make even in their ancient and inefficient 14nm. It took Intel a very long time to get this dominant market position and it would take just as long for AMD (or anyone else for that mater) to make any significant impact.

If AMD would display the same tough attitude towards its marketing employees that it demonstrated to OEM's in order to stop them adversely competing with one another, there is much potential in AMD's stock performance that goes undiscovered due to poor basic overclocking concerns. There is absolutely no benefit of using excess power which these chips actually suffer from due to heat dissipation issues. Spike power consumption for instance is such a tdp wasting protocol that, if eliminated, would benefit overall performance.

When the largest dairy in existence tells cow farmers "we want all the milk"
Guess what?

They get the milk. All of the milk. Anytime they want it. TSMC is just a crazy lazy courtesan in the silicon family album.

Intels 10nm has scarred a lot of AMD troopers. Get used to it, 3nm is coming. Lol

I was talking about patents, from the USPTO, there is no "patent" office, we have the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

I get that you are an ignorant person. Foundry business runs on trust.

Stay on topic.
Quit the bickering and arguing.
Stop with the insults.
Be civil and discuss the topic.
Report problems; and, do not post retaliatory posts after reporting.

Thank You

It is indeed quite an amusement to be lectured on a company after having enjoyed an hour long interview with a "hero" keynote opener.
I'm delighted to meet fans' expectation to reality.

That AMD's CPU market share is limited by manufacturing capacity.
Even for DIY market, 5000 series are in stock and at MSRP or below for months. (as if that was an indicator, anyhow)

USPO?

Oh, I'm so sorry. Clearly nobody would have figured what I meant, given the context.
I'll punish myself by not doing something pleasant this evening, that I've otherwise planned to do.

Why tsmc would agree to this is simply economics. More demand and a rich customer causes prices to rise for other customers of tsmc. That is if new customers is willing to pay higher prices, that causes other customers to also have to pay higher prices or risk losing out their spot. Tsmc is the best manufacturer right now and if they want to keep that position, they will have to continue their spending war. Higher profits helps this out.

Intel on the other hand has no chance of amortizing 100 billion dollars on fabs and recouping the spending over 3 years. They are more and more likely to go fabless and commit r and d to architecture and software because that is the only way they can get back to tick tock(something the new ceo has committed too). R and d for process and keeping their fabs up to date is too expensive. Unless revenue grows exponentially soon, they won't be able to do it

On top of this, AMD gets crippled if intel outsources manufacturing to TSMC. I think TSMC will have no problem taking intels money over AMD because they can pay better than anyone and help raise wafer prices. Because intel does not make consoles and intel is already charging 300 to 500 dollar for what are small chips, they can pay high pricing that can even intimidate even Apple. AMD is making TSMC 9 percent of its revenue while Apple is making 25 percent of TSMC revenue. Do you not think Intel could be a similar size to Apple when Nvidia is barely making anything with tsmc this year and is still a 5 to 6 percent revenue share customer? On top of this, intel can pay way higher prices considering the savings on not buying new fabs, would be 10s of billions of dollars.
