Hi, I have a Sapphire RX 580 8GB OC.
SKU# 11265-05-41G

My graphics card fans are stuck at full speed irrespective of the load and heat. Trying to control fan speed through the driver or Afterburner has resulted in failure. Removing and reseating the 4pin pwm fan header also yielded no positive results either. While searching techpowerup forums I came across a thread with similar problems underlined. In that same thread the graphics card was diagnosed with a failed fan controller and was advised to return it.
I would like to ask if my fan controller is damaged would there be a way to connect the graphics card fans into the motherboard itself bypassing the graphics cards fan controller and using the fan controller of the motherboard. Also, could something be done with a software tool (maybe) to read the temperature of the gpu and adjust the fans accordingly through the pwm fan controller of the motherboard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have to ask since you didn't specify, did you exit out of Afterburner? The fans should go back to normal speeds once you exit the program. You may have to go into 'Task Manager' and do an 'end task' on MSIafterburner.

Yes I did, even in safe mode the fans are full speed. Even during POST!

I would turn the pc off, switch the power supply off and leave it for a few minutes. Then try again.

Ok, Go into Amd Radeon Software and go to the performance tab for your gpu and reset it (top right corner) under 'sidebar'.

You can also try resetting your pc bios.

Well, if the fan is 100% right from when you boot the pc and it wasn't before msiafterburner I would have to assume the fan speed is sticking for some reason. Did you try removing the bios battery when you turned off the power supply?

Also, if you capable, you could remove the graphics card from the pc and leave it off for a few hours maybe even overnight, then re-install the card and turn the power supply back on and boot the pc.

Are you sure you didn't do anything else to cause this? Such as bios mods?

Yes 100% right from boot. The temperature is below 45C and no load still. Motherboard bios battery not removed. I did remove and leave the graphics card overnight no change. No bios mod, bought it new 4 years ago.

Edit: I was playing a game when this happened.

Looks like this is a continuation of an issue from May 2020

At this stage-

1) Either the thermal sensor is toast and causing the fans to run at 100%

2) the onboard fan controller is toast and runs the fans at 100%

----

There are a few solutions.

1. Look for a dead card with the same SKU and rip the cooler off that one

2. Replace the cooler with one from Raijintek or Arctic Cooling.

3. Replace the Graphics card entirely.

4. Rip the shroud off the heatsink assembly and ghetto rig your own fans on to the heatsink with cable ties

Use a 3pin fan to sata adapter to run those fans. Arctic Cooling P12 fans are absolutely cheap as chips in most places and they are exceptionally good fans

---

Option 1 & 2 are not guaranteed to fix your graphics card.

In reality, 100% fan on a Rx580 probably isn't all that loud. I have been running 4 pc's full of cards with 100% in different rooms and it's not that terrible.

Not actually, in that case the temp. has to reach 70C and only then fan would rev up (to maintain 70C all along). This time its not the case, even at 40C fans are 100%.

Yes, I agree with the fan controller going bad.

#1 Not possible at the moment
#2 gpu coolers are not available in my country. Maybe atleast not at the moment.
#3 Not possible at the moment
#4 Yes possible and the exact thing I was thinking but why run the fans through sata? Also the gpu fans are working fine, only the fan controller is gone, could I connect the fans onto the mobo header instead?
Again if I go with your Arctic cooling fans hack would it be possible to connect them the motherboard itself and not the sata ones; Could these be temperature controlled as in when the gpu temp. rises, fan speed rises too?

Thank you.

Its upto you however you wish to power them. the sata power adapter was just a suggestion in case you didnt have spare fan headers.

Optionally you can get the PWM version of the P12 fans and a PWM splitter. Depending on your board manufacturer and age of your board you can set which fans ramp up when your graphics card reaches a certain temperature.

You might not even need two P12's Maybe even one will be fine as it will push more air than the stock fans ever could at full RPM.

Run one P12 at full RPM or Two P12s at half RPM if youre not doing the PWM thing.

How to do this? I think motherboard fan header controllers can read only cpu temp. and control fan speed accordingly (not sure)? Can the motherboard fan header and fan controllers read gpu temp. and adjust fan speed accordingly? What softwares would you need to do this? Afterburner?

Thank you.

You do it in the bios. I think for Asus it should be in the fan control or a Q-Fan settings.

All headers should read fan RPM but fan control will only be provided if you have 4 pin PWM fans in a pwm header.

Its alot easier just to get something like a 3-pin Fan Resistor Cable that can lower the fan speed by 25-50% and have them going at that speed 24/7 rather than mess with the bios. Buy the P12 fans first and see how loud they are at full rpm, If they are too loud then get one of those fan resistor cables to slow them down so you get all of the cooling but without the noise. The one i linked to is just an example, There are many other manufacturers that make the same kind of cable/adapter if you cant manually lower the fan speed in the bios.

I do not have q-fan but would this do?

I have got two free 4pin fan headers. So there's no way of controlling fan rpm with 3pin header? Did not knew that, thanks.

I do not like this idea, guess I will go with the bios one.

Currently I do not have the fans, will have to order. Will get back when I get it.

Thank you so much!

Im not familiar with that bios so you'll just have to read through your manual or just play around to see if its possible. You want to set the GPU as 'target source' - if you cant see anything about that in the bios then I assume its not possible.

Some Asus boards allow traditional 3 pin fans to be controlled in the same way as a PWM 4 pin fan from the bios but I have never managed to get it to work. I may have needed to install Asus Ai Monitor to get it working but I never install the software that is normally supplied with motherboards and there are better software available when it comes to monitoring voltages and temperatures so i dont bother.

is that even the real MSI BIOS? (doesn't look to be so to me) or is that "hardware monitor" a software suite of monitoring sensors, much like "HWInfo" ? or....something else?

I've never been familiar with a MB BIOS that can read the sensor on your GPU! ie one of the sensors on the GPU die specifically. What the MB will likely measure/monitor is the PCIe slot temp that the GPU is plugged into. My opinion is that is not as as accurate as having the GPU fans controlled by the sensors on the GPU. It will work, but that is not where the heat is directly being made so the residual heat that makes it to the slot doesn't provide as accurate of a picture for the system to use to control your fans

No GPU as target source in my bios, only target temp., min and max fan speed. I think its not possible in my board. Could you think of any third party app. that could do it?

Hardware Monitor is a tab in my uefi bios, yes it is real msi bios. You can set system fan speed wrt temp. in it. It also displays voltages and other info.

It will work, but that is not where the heat is directly being made so the residual heat that makes it to the slot doesn't provide as accurate of a picture for the system to use to control your fans

read up on your MB manual. I'm not familiar with MSI BIOS, literally have never seen anyone post a screen shot of the "hardware monitor" tab you have shown already. but the concept you are trying to do is universal regardless

you will need to
1) connect the fans that are physically attached to the GPU to an available fan header on your MB. Take note of what that fan header is labeled as
2) In the MB BIOS go to your fan control tab and select that specific header and select that it should be controlled via the specific PCIe slot the GPU is plugged into

For ex: You plug the GPU fans into the header labeled "CPU_OPT". Then go to your fan control tab, find the "CPU_OPT" header and where you can select which source is used to control the PWM signal. You should have selections like the CPU, VRMs, PHC, PCIe slots, etc. You would want the specific PCIe slot GPU is plugged into. Assuming you are using the top most slot of your board it will be called something like PCIE16_1 (for 16X PCIe slot #1)

zkus odinstalovat ovladače grafiky (asi to není nutné) vždy se přeinstalují. Hlavní je mít všechny ventilátory nastavené automaticky v BIOSu. Vždy existuje možnost automatické konfigurace ventilátorů. Pomohlo mi to.

try to uninstall the graphics drivers (probably not necessary) they will always be reinstalled. The main thing is to have all fans set automatically in the BIOS. There is always the option to automatically configure the fans. It helped me.

IZ

v BIOSu také nevidím gpu.

i also don't see gpu in the BIOS. But BIOS set som setting for fans and software in win too.

try letting the BIOS set all the fans.

bad communication at BIOS and OS priority for me like a jerk

I finally decided to clean up. I disassembled the gpu, blew the compressor, cleaned the old paste and applied a new one. And now everything is fine
