Can we please stop giving these big game companies money for reskinning the work of devs that no longer even work for them.

No.

Some franchises just hit the nail on the head and D2 is arguably the most true to its core ARPG concept and adds depth that keeps it replayable. A tad hardcore, pretty unforgiving, dark and rewarding because things take real effort. Progression is tangible. Elements you can hardly come by in todays 'everybody is special and we cater to stupid' gameplay. Where 'RPG' means a choice of adding 1% damage or they even simply dont even use numbers but 'a bit' and 'a lot'. Who needs math right. Every idiot must be able to play along. D2 is not that. D3 is however a perfect example of being that. You can even like both, but Id say for different reasons.

Grim Dawn is possibly the closest offline example (or; not always-online). Cherish these gems, really, because they are super rare.

Stay a while and listen...

Its so cheap and never gets old anyway lol. How such a simple thing got stuck in so many minds, thats when you know a game is art.

The real question is: can the new shared stash hold everything I have saved in Atma?

Does anyone want to form a group and play this when the time comes? I kinda feel like diving into it and getting carried away like I did 20 years ago. I still have the original CDs.
It's been 12 years since I've played this. Hell, short of sports titles on Xbox, this would be my first gaming since finishing Skyrim in 2014. That being said, I'd be in for playing some D2. However, I'm so rusty that I would most certainly be the "special" "short bus" member of the party.

I will also be a lost cause, but that is the fun in it. I never mastered the art of finding the perfect kit.

Its easy. Roll a Necro, raise skeletons and enjoy the TV. Its really a great way to explore the game because you can see how monsters work without dying left and right :) that setup only gets challenging in the highest difficulties.

As much as I dislike Acti-Blizz these days, Im going to try it at least for free.

Beside that, original game was by Blizzard North, which has nothing to do with today Blizzard. And it kinda shows, in today quality of Blizzard. :D

I wonder, if they make D2R a battle.net only affair, will the skeletons add modern desync to the gameplay?

Yep, absolutely zero atmosphere -- 100% Chinese arcade.

Tbh, when I wrote "modern desync", I was thinking of desync in single player, because it is only "modern" to be tied to an online connection when playing on your own ;)
Oh well, nostalgia...

What a rip off ( I have pre purchased the game prior to the open beta announcement) :
a)I had the game dialed to max details before anything on first run only for the game to just barely make 50FPS In the " Rogue Encampment";
b) following above point a I set the game to minimum , at where it yelded ~60 fps's
It ran on a Ryzen 5800x , 32GB DDR4 and an Rx 480 8GB.
Le: I mean wasn't the minimum spec for the remastered to have the in-game FPS limiter removed or what? ( Yes , I somewhat know the original ran technically different, sprite-like animation)

Apparently they removed the 21:9/Ultrawide support in the Beta even tho it was in the Alpha and now it has black bars, theres quite a noise about it on the Blizz/Diablo forums.
Supposedly it was removed due to the vocal minority of the PvP die hards saying that its too much of an advantage.

To be fair the game did have performance issues even on higher end systems with a lot of fire effects on the screen and also around water/reflections.
Thats also tuned down in the beta now, I don't have beta access just reading stuff on the official forums as usual.

I also had to lower settings to around medium to get smooth-ish frames 'I don't care about 60 in a ARPG' but to be honest I coulnd't see much of a difference between medium and maxed out anyway, it looks good either way.

Gonna try the free access beta starting on Aug 20 and see how it runs on my system compared to how the Alpha ran.

Reskin.

I played it in April or when it came out on alpha, played it now. But this time I played it with 3 more people.

I can say this: it's the only hack &slash in the planet that has 7 player co-op (one for each class). And on that note, this is 100% a reskin nothing more. Only worth it if you have your friends with you in a lan party or via Discord to laugh your ass off while having a drink and doing infinite dungeons.

The mechanics have not changed one bit, you are playing a 21-year-old game. And that's the sad part.

So many games, on the top of my head, Chaosbane, Van Hellsing, Walcen etc have new mechanics. know how to do micromanaging on the potions and over-all inventory ++ the visibility of the map exploration wise is still the same one from 20 years ago.
Choasbane and Walcen lord of mayhem have one of the best way of showing the map as you progress through the dungeon without having to constantly keep the map open....from this point DIablo 3 had better map visibility and potion managing than this. And of course it id, its a newer game with a better way of handling everything.

Well, for games like D2, polishing is exactly what I want. Not a remake/reboot, but a remaster.

Newer isn't always better. Many people consider D2 the pinnacle of its genre, and I'm pretty sure a big part of the reason Blizzard is doing D2R is so they re visit and do some solid take aways so they don't end up with another Diablo 3.

They're just betting nostalgia will have us buy Diablo 4, after that Diablo 3 train wreck.
I'll take this for a spin, but I have no intention to touch Diablo 4.

They're just betting nostalgia will have us buy Diablo 4, after that Diablo 3 train wreck.
I'll take this for a spin, but I have no intention to touch Diablo 4.
Maybe the D2R is a try-out before releasing D4 and they want to see people's reaction. If this d2r turns to be ok and has a warm welcome, D4 might be more likely like that but added few things, something changed or expanded :)

Too bad Wolcen is utter shit otherwise though ;)

Similarly, many other ARPGs have implemented new things. Some are also better ARPGs overall; but lets take a game like Path of Exile. Its bigger. There are more skills. The economy is arguably managed better (currency and crafting systems). It has an actual endgame.

But is it also more enjoyable to play? I think it depends on your expectations. Where PoE has its charm because of all the options, pethaps D2 had and maintained its charm because of all its limitations, while being absolutely excellent on atmosphere and itemization.

Im playing ELEX right now. Its actually similarly 'clunky' as the original D2 in terms of combat and in action gameplay. You are literally fighting the controls more so than the enemies; their numbers just come on top of it. D2 has similar taste: yes you would corpse run a half dozen times to just get that one elite down, yes you run into things that utterly murder you and you lack things to survive. Yes, you get lost on the map and the overlay makes you dizzy after a while... Its what makes if tick - and then you get better gear, and zerg the map feeling like a god.

Newer games - even Arpgs, seem to lack that high effort - high reward gameplay because they are trying to make 15 min dopamine shot gameplay cycles. Not too hard so every idiot can somehow progress and not feel bad about losing. D3 was that way. And even PoE caters to that norm. Every update the skill level needed is moved further away from the start of the game.

Well, for games like D2, polishing is exactly what I want. Not a remake/reboot, but a remaster.

Exactly; D3 was their sorry attempt at a remake, lets be honest, and they failed completely in terms of concepts and systems that were changed or added. Fast food gaming - every mcDonalds tasted the same, even between different classes or levels of progression.
