The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) today announced Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA and a trailblazer in building accelerated computing platforms, is the 2021 recipient of the industry's highest honor, the Robert N. Noyce Award. SIA presents the Noyce Award annually in recognition of a leader who has made outstanding contributions to the semiconductor industry in technology or public policy. Huang will accept the award at the SIA Awards Dinner on Nov. 18, 2021.

"Jensen Huang's extraordinary vision and tireless execution have greatly strengthened our industry, revolutionized computing, and advanced artificial intelligence," said John Neuffer, SIA president and CEO. "Jensen's accomplishments have fueled countless innovations—from gaming to scientific computing to self-driving cars—and he continues to advance technologies that will transform our industry and the world. We're pleased to recognize Jensen with the 2021 Robert N. Noyce Award for his many achievements in advancing semiconductor technology."

Huang founded NVIDIA in 1993 and has served since its inception as CEO and a member of the board of directors. Starting out in 3D graphics, NVIDIA helped build the gaming market into the world's largest entertainment industry. More recently, NVIDIA ignited modern AI—the next era of computing—with the GPU acting as the brain of computers, robots, and self-driving cars.

Huang is a recipient of the IEEE Founder's Medal, the Dr. Morris Chang Exemplary Leadership Award, and honorary doctorate degrees from Taiwan's National Chiao Tung University, National Taiwan University, and Oregon State University. In 2019, Harvard Business Review ranked him No. 1 on its list of the world's 100 best-performing CEOs over the lifetime of their tenure. In 2017, he was named Fortune's Businessperson of the Year. Prior to founding NVIDIA, Huang worked at LSI Logic and Advanced Micro Devices. Huang holds a BSEE degree from Oregon State University and an MSEE degree from Stanford University.

"I am honored to receive the 2021 Noyce Award and do so on behalf of my colleagues at NVIDIA, whose body of work this award recognizes," said Huang. "It has been the greatest joy and privilege to have grown up with the semiconductor and computer industries, two that so profoundly impact the world. As we enter the era of AI, robotics, digital biology, and the metaverse, we will see super-exponential technology advances. There's never been a more exciting or important time to be in the semiconductor and computer industries."

The Noyce Award is named in honor of semiconductor industry pioneer Robert N. Noyce, co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and Intel Corporation.

Will there be any mention in the award citation of the dirty tricks used by Nvidia, to force competing GPU vendors out of the market place in the late 90's early 00's, under his stewardship?

Probably not.

Did I miss something? I don't remember Nvidia doing anything interesting this year, enough to get an award.

I appreciate what he and his nvidia have contributed to the industry, but what I do more is that I hate him for all his disgusting behaviour and attitude towards his company's partners as well as us gamers.
I made a promise this year that no matter how cheap an RTX 30 series card would be, I would consider all of it mining card and go for an RX 6000, especially considering that 6600 XT is perfect for me, though it's also hard to buy...

The world doesn't revolve around consumer butt hurt. Industry, any and every industry, is a competitive place in which the main motivation for progress is uncompromising rivalry. The end goal for every corporation is complete dominance over the industry. If 3DFX was strong enough it would brutally trample nVidia, just as Intel would destroy AMD if other corporations wouldn't force them to create a secondary source years ago - or AMD would destroy Intel if they had the means. Or Amazon is diligently working towards destroying every company in the world and be the uncontested ruler of the planet. That's the global economy for ya.

The fact that Jensen Huang managed to get nVidia to the top by any means necessary and create a near-monopoly in many industry segments means that he's a very effective CEO and deserves praise.

I mean they kind of have to give the award to Jensen since under his control Nvidia have bought out and shut down, sued, or monopolised anyone else relevant to the award.

When there's only one player in the industry because that player isn't playing fair, it's no longer really an award, is it?

Up next, the "best current US president of July 2021 award" goes to Joe Biden. Well done for being the only current US president, Joe!

get nVidia to the top by any means necessary
Any means necessary... seriously? He sucks money endlessly at the cost of killing our very own planet? He did a great favour to his stock holders by creating CMP cards on purpose and selling tonnes of them, yet claiming that's good? Oh, come on. He's making more things into total waste and contributing to energy consumption. Just as Linus from LTT said, he ignored the first two R's of the 3R - Rethink and Reuse, on purpose to fill his own pocket at the cost of hurting this environment where all human live and depend on. So "by any means necessary", especially what Jensen Huang has done, isn't really a good thing.
Let me conclude this with the famous sentence by Linus, the creator of Linux, "so, nVIDIA, xxxx you!"

Dunno guys but lets face it... he did move a thing or two forward in the world.

Its supercomputers that gave us current day vaccines. Take a short while to consider whats in those. Nvidia has been using a leading position to keep moving forward. Not something we can attribute to, say, Intel.

As for playing fair, welcome to the world and business. Im not a fan either. But its the reality we ALL cultivate by being part of it. Excess happens everywhere and they show us the current system is at the end of a lifecycle. But we are humans... one upping the next guy is nature. Exoansion and accumulating power is another.

No, for the fact that he is willing to destroy everyone and everything in the name of corporate progress. That's the corporate benchmark, not some touchy-feely sentiment

People seem childish in the way they try to believe a fantasy of companies having any reason to exist other than to make money. If nVidia could make money by kidnapping you or your children and selling organs on the black market, they would absolutely do it. I have a small, insignificant company and yet, If I could make a deal with an omnipotent entity to get a guaranteed 1000% yoy growth for a decade by personally poisoning half of the world's population and destroying half of the endangered species of flora and fauna, I would take the deal with no second thought. "Any means necessary" is a great thing when talking about a CEO, becauce a CEO's only obligations lie with shareholders. Consumers are just a means to an end and are of little significance once they played their part.

Well deserved, and earned.
I don't like everything they've done but business is business.
But he has definitely earned it on technical merit and business acumen.

No, you missed my point. I admit he's a great CEO and businessman, and at the same time I don't appreciate his way of making money at the cost of hurting this planet. It's important to treat business nicely, but it's definitely more vital to treat the planet nicely. If not, every company now can start to develop "by any means necessary" and killing ourselves in just a few years and we're all done.
Yeah sure companies don't have other reason than to make money, but there are certain rules, or rather responsibilities to follow. We shouldn't hurt this Earth after all. It will be going to backfire if we don't treat this planet well.
