It doesn't matter what OS you use, you're going to be in "non-integer scaling" hell for pretty much everything. 157ppi leaves you at the mercy of 125/150/175% scaling - all of which look like ass.

28" is too big for 1080p and too small* for 4K. Fight me.


* - might work for 4K gaming where 25-30" is desirable, but competitive gamers choose framerate over resolution every time and this isn't a gaming monitor, not by a long shot....

It might work for gaming at 60hz with half res or no AA 4K with heavily upscaled UI

Absolutely fine - that's 217 dpi which is pretty much perfect size for 200% for an effective 108 dpi. The problem isn't scaling, since 200% and 300% look great - it's scaling at non-integer values that results in the image quality going to hell.

Benchmark for raster fonts is 96 dpi and people generally get upset if it's below 80dpi because the pixels are too visible at regular viewing distance, and at 120dpi even people with great eyesight end up leaning forward to read text because by that point it's as small as newspaper fine print, but at a further viewing distance than you'd normally read a newspaper.

But iMacs are 5k on a 27 inch, and they look fine...windows is just doing a poor job at upscaling (I wrote that before seeing you answer)

Yep. Integer scaling is the only way because even in a modern, vector-heavy UI like iOS or Android you will still have to deal with raster fonts, raster images, and raster UI elements in applications.
