Blizzard Shuts Down World of Warcraft Sex Guild

Some people play RPG's like World of Warcraft to escape reality. Some play them for the online community. However, the World of Warcraft ex-guild "Abhorrent Taboo" took the latter reason a little too far. The interests of the group could be summed up in three letters: ERP ('erotic roleplay'). Among other strange pleasures that should not be mentioned for the sake of decency, the guild indulged in what they call "extreme ageplay", which is where members pretend they are ages they are not. Concerned World of Warcraft players decided to take a closer look at the clan, and promptly found a twelve year old girl engaging in "erotic roleplay" with a man much her senior, who did not stop "erotic roleplay" even when she stated her real age. Blizzard took a valiant stand against this, and Abhorrent Taboo is now an ex-guild. However, they have reformed themselves under the name "Vile Anathema". Whether or not they've learned not to have ERP with a 12 year old girl remains to be seen.

You know who's to blame? The parents of this 12-year-old for letting their kid play an online game which clearly states in its ESRB that content may change online.

Parents -- please be parents, and don't leave the job up to video games.

The article states: "The underage gamer took screenshots showing a member of 'Abhorrent Taboo' continuing to proposition the gamer for 'ERP' even after he/she stated she was only 12 years of age. The posting of these screenshots is what prompted Blizzard to shutdown the guild, according to the theorizer on the forum."

Even if she was just stating that she was "virtually" twelve, there's no law being broken -- I don't even think it breaks Blizzard's TOS.

blizzard's TOS also says that they can delete you and tell you to get a life. if this girl were abducted due to playing this game, blizzard could face a lawsuit.

I face a lawsuit every time I turn on my computer or drive my car down the road. I'm sure Blizzard's fending off at least a hundred at any given moment.

We had the same thing going on in Anarchy Online during the early days. Not just ERP, but also all-out prostitution, public strip-shows and whatnot. It doesn't suprise me even for even a microsecond that this case popped up for Blizzard and WoW either.

Hell, I know that this sort of thing is actually more common than most people, and ESPECIALLY parents, know. As an avid RP'er myself, I've seen it often enough. It's there, it's real, and it comes it pretty much every shape and form there is, from mere stripping/erotic dancing to scenarios where you have rape, BDSM and everything else. Just as in real life, and often just as disgusting if not worse. Most of it is hidden, but sometimes it comes out into the open and people are shocked, horrified and start blaming the game-company. Why?

It's not the game-company's fault that people get off on pixels. Neither is it the game-company's fault that people do this or are exposed to it, and every time people start bitching about this or that company "allowing" this to happen, it annoys me to high heaven. The company designs and makes available a game-world with it's features and content, and people fill it with life. Then who's to blame? Partially the parents of the kids that are caught up in it, since they don't seem to bother and/or take interest in what their kids are doing (most because they haven't the slightest clue what so ever, and even less of an interest (and treat the computer as the babysitter that you don't have to pay), and partially the mere fact that if you put people into a situation where they have a perceived belief that they are anonymous, they'll do the strangest things. Give a person anonymity, a stage and an audience, and you'll have them change their behavior so completely that you'd think that you've never met them.

These things are present in ALL MMO's, regardless of what people say. In some it's more acceptable, like for example Second Life. Why people are surprised I have absolutely no clue about.
