Why do modern motherboards have so many high-speed USB ports on the back panel nowadays? Is it just because they are connected directly to the motherboard - like side ports on a modern TV?
Note that I am only talking about the commonplace type-A ports here.
In the case of my current PC I have two 2.0s and four 3.0s for a total of 6. A lot of mainstream motherboards have a similar configuration - but with even higher speed USB 3.1/3.2 gen 1/2 ports.
Some of the motherboards I am looking at have 5 or more high-speed ports.
This doesn't make sense to me. For me the only high-speed thing you'd want to connect is a USB 3.x hard-drive/SSD and that has a cable of only about 50cm(20 inches) so I'd not want to connect that to the back panel.
In my current PC I only have my keyboard, mouse, printer and a bluetooth dongle connected, none of which require more than USB 2.0.
What am I missing here?
