High WAF and PEC seem related, my MX500 does have high PEC which is coursed by yes as you said high WAF. I am getting on my MX500 in order of 50x the rate of other SSD's.
What revision do you have (I can discover it from the firmware)? The one with SMI SM2258G and 64L flash like me?
I expect its unlikely their newest SSD's have the same problem, but I was curious.
Yes as new revisions have newer and better flash (at first it had 64L, then 96L, 128L and 176L) and controller (at first SMI SM2258G and now SMI SM2259G - this latter has a better ECC, higher clock and efficiency).

Theoretically:
- M3CR02x: SMI SM2258G + 64L TLC.
- M3CR03x: SMI SM2259G + 96L TLC.
- M3CR04x: SMI SM2259G + 176L TLC.

I don't know which is the firmware combined with the 128L revision. I'm sure that it had 128L flash since also P5 and BX500 used it.

at $.18/GB this performance is mediocre given that it is neither the cutting edge in real-world performance nor has gamebreaking sequentials (lol), when there's (multiple) competing products that are like half the price and perform just as well ...
It's fun the fact that you consider only the performance and not even the hardware, lol, because the Samsung 980 isn't better as you said. The Samsung 980 is DRAM-less, has a slower flash (128L vs 176L) and a worse controller (quad-channel vs eight-channel). Also, if I remember correctly, the 980 has better performance after the SLC cache.

Firmware is M3CR023 which as I understand it is the latest firmware for the first hardware revision.

If there is 2 newer revisions not just 1, thats a bit of a wow, as I didnt buy the ssd that long ago. Some places must have some quite old stock.

It has 114 erase cycles in 9 months of usage.

$.18/GB is good value when a product with comparable (real-world) performance can be had for as low as $.9/GB (okay, outside of the US but yeah)??????????????
i swear to god you guys must all have minting machines in your basements ...

Well, the BX500 has 5 revisions:
- M6CR01x=SMI SM2258XT+64L TLC.
- M6CR02x=SMI SM2259XT+96L TLC.
- M6CR03x=SMI SM2259XT+96 QLC.
- M6CR04x=SMI SM2259XT+128L TLC.
- M6CR05x=SMI SM2259XT+176L TLC.

The Crucial P5 changed the flash from 96L TLC to 128L keeping the same controller (Micron DM01B2) and well, maybe the P1 switched from 64L QLC to 96L QLC...

What SSD are you talking about? Another DRAM-less with worse performance after the SLC cache?

P5 Plus vs 980.png

I would say that almost 1000 MB/s are not the same thing, or am I wrong?

Still stuck on (post SLC-cache) sequentials I see.

I am referring to this graph:

(I am also blind, apparently the 99%'s the Exceria PLUS, which is $.14/GB, the Exceria isn't on the graph here for some reason, but would be at 94% and that's $.9/GB, but yea)

Yes, and you are still stuck on that graphic ignoring the hardware of SSDs and the SLC cache management.

Yes, because these do not matter for average, daily use cases.
If you really care about sequentials (because of the work you're doing, perhaps), I'd recommend you look for professional datacenter SSDs ...

Yeah while a graphic that show a percent of every SSDs without knowing on what it’s based yes. Really, you are ignoring the hardware of each SSDs, and the P5 Plus is very good under this aspect. The 980 - as I already said - is DRAM-less with a four-channel dual-core controller, it’s worse than the P5 Plus.

Like the Intel P5510 which is QLC? lol I’m joking, but seriously, there aren’t only datacenter drives for this case but also MLC drives. By the way transfer file isn’t a so rare case for “normal” users…

For that, SLC caches and stuff exist. An average (home) user will do a full drive-write like that maybe once in their lifetimes, if it comes to that.

Yes, I'm aware that the 980's DRAMless (amongst others). Doesn't mean that it cannot perform. If you would but have read the reviews, you would have seen that in actual realistic usages the 980 performs quite well actually.

Be a DRAM-less SSD doesn’t mean only that you have worse performance in random and post-SLC, but also worse endurance.

Again, if in some case the 980 is better this doesn’t mean that it is worth than the P5 Plus. DRAM-less SSDs are not recommended as OS drive.

Unfortunately VLO doesn’t support Marvell 88SS1074, I was curious to know about the flash.
Ya, I didn't pull it apart to check, and now it's installed in the PC. I'm kind of curious also though.

"24 GB additional overprovisioning"

Can you stop saying this its not overprovisioning its binning
there wasnt enough good blocks to make a 1024GB drive

Drives with enough spare blocks are made into Micron 3400's
Then the rest are made into P5 Plus's

Uhm… no? Every SSDs has an amount of OP in terms of gigabytes, even Micron 3400s. Spare blocks have nothing to do with it.

Yes they do have spare blocks but the ones that get turned into 960GB or 1000GB instead of 1024GB dont have enough left over without eating into all of them

I will pull the bad blocks right now for you for any of my ssd's and show you if you like

Since I first commented prices have plummeted making it far more interesting. Torn between WD SN770 and this drive basically within $10 of each other.

I'd go with the WD770. The $10 pays for 2 years extra warranty for drives that are otherwise nearly identical.
