Ryzen Owners: Is Alder Lake tempting enough to switch to Intel?

Intel's Alder Lake launch has been a huge success, with the company able to reclaim the performance throne with the Core i9-12900K. The Core i7-12700K and i5-12600K are offering better value than AMD's competing processors.

As Ryzen owner, are you considering to switch back to Intel with your next upgrade?

Well, why would I spend a LOT of money to get a new set of CPU MB RAM and maybe even radiator at the same time? I'm still using 3700X and waiting to go for 5900X when price goes down
I don't see any point in E-cores. Why not make it all P-cores if it's possible? (which is clearly better and easier to schedule lol) Don't ever attempt to make something based on x86 as efficient as Apple's ARM-based M1. That's not what x86 is for. The answer I think, is that Intel still can't make their P-cores low-power enough and small-sized enough.
Btw, thanks Intel, for accelerating Ryzen's price drop!

Oh another thing. I'm glad MB manufacturers only care little about 12VO thing, otherwise power supply is new, too. And it'll be an overall expense explosion on a PC...

And... what if PC market got even worse, let's say it couldn't survive this crisis driven by shortage and cryptomining, maybe a PS or XBox would be a better choice.

It was never about the brand. That's what people fail to understand. One has to consider many things when upgrading: budget, efficiency, performance, compatibility, stability, etc. Right now, Alder Lake doesn't tick all the boxes, but maybe next gen will. It's too early to tell.

Personally, I'm considering a switch to an HEDT platform to upgrade my PC's storage in order to fully take advantage of the upcoming 10gbps internet which is going to be implemented in my town by March 2022. If the next Intel HEDT will be a better buy than Zen 3 Threadripper, I will buy Intel no problem.

I upgraded from Z97 4690K in april 2020; switched to X570 and 3600 as a placeholder for the 5600X/5800X or the last series avilable on AM4.

Three weeks ago i upgraded my trusty 1080Ti(best gpu ever made in hindsight)to a 6800XT.
Only did it for peace of mind and so that i can retire my MSI 1080Ti GamingX, put HER in HER box and offer her a life of luxury and relaxation.
She deserves that, she served me flawlessly for more than 4 years.

All that being said, in 2022 after AMD releases the final AM4 SKUs, the 3D cache affair, and the reviews are out,
i'll replace my 3600 with whatever makes the most sense at the time, the 3D Cache stuff if it makes sense or a 5800X if the 3D cache stuff doesn't.
And i'll keep that for at least untill 2025 when i'll switch from Win10 to 11.

Intel can go set itself on fire and then blow up for all i care.
They kept us on 4c/4t and 4c/8t at huge prices for years, i will never forgive them for that.

SO yeah, alder lake can P-core or E-core spontaneously combust rn.

Main thing is that we have REAL competition now, and that's good for us.

not tempted at all ... i switched just recently because i got a free 3600 but thanks to Intel i might be able to get a 5XXX faster than i thought ... and not just a 5600X

i saw a 5900X cheaper than what the 3600 did cost ... let's just hope the price will remain low ahah ... i can afford a 200$ CPU but a i5 12400F is not really appealing ...
my previous 6600K at 259$ did leave me a bitter taste with their "rental K OC" the whole WUPDATE microcode fiasco ... never got around even trying every fixes and workaround i saw, my poor 6600K got stuck at 3.9 (that was rich coming from a CPU/Mobo with a total price 5 time higher than the mobo i have right now or 1.5 time if i count the CPU value)

the next and last AM4 refresh will also be an option.
after all it would not make sense to switch back and get a new mobo for that shiny CPU that offer some good but also some goof, i also intend to stay on Win10 as long as possible this time ...

imho big.LITTLE is not for everyone and is not "the next best thing" for all computer, fine for ultraportables, phone, and tablets nonetheless

yep, fed up with Intel and they are not redeeming themselves ... performances? sure, they are ... no worries i reckon they can have that crown ... yet that does not make Ryzen worthless or obsolete

edit: well they could have redeemed themselves if they launched AL faster ... i would certainly have no complaint getting a free 5900X instead of a 3600 2, 3 month ago

It makes little sense for Zen 3 owners to sell their processor at a lost and buy a supposedly cheaper Intel Alder Lake. In addition, one will still need to consider significant costs associated with buying a new Z690 board, new cooler if you are not able to get your hands on a LGA 1700 mounting kit, or if there are compatibility issues, and potentially new memory to allow the platform to run at its full potential. Most games running at 1440p or higher, may be GPU limited and not CPU limited to see a significant difference.

In my opinion, Alder Lake only ticks the performance box. Everything else is not looking good to me. I know people will argue that the chip is more attractively priced, however I feel that is only when you look at the CPU cost in silo. And there are quite a number of issues out there which makes Alder Lake not viable for me. I understand this is an early adopter issue, but I certainly don't want to be an early adopter in this case.

IMO, If you're on Ryzen 5XXX, stay where you are. IF you're Ryzen 3xxx AND you want more performance right now, Alder Lake might be what you want.
However, everyone needs to remember that the next generation of Ryzen is just around the corner and it might be wise to play the waiting game for a few more months to see what AMD is cooking up next, especially if you're going to drop a lot of money on such an upgrade..

It's not the processors that are preventing me from upgrading, its the rest of the package. I want a motherboard that will last for 3-4 generations and the pricing of DDR5 kinda ruins some of it too even if that was expected.

Ryzen owner here and with a B450 that gets UEFI updates of all AM4 CPUs I can see no reason to not go for any faster Ryzen when needed. AL isn't made for AM4 platform owners but mainly for Intel owners used and willing to change platform every 2-3 years.

Yraggul, a few posts above summed up the cpu situation perfectly! I am in a similar situation and mindset and totally agree with his words. For now, I am satisfied with my "placeholder" R5 3600, it was a big upgrade for me last year, coming from an i5 3570k. I am planning to switch to last AM4 socket cpu generation later, but I need a better gpu first anyway. Maybe I will switch my whole platform for raptor lake if that will make sense, but considering my usual budget, I probably stick to AMD. Also I prefer to support the "underdog" as Intel was playing lazy and dirty for many many years... AMD isn't shy to ask more money for their products when they are good, but heck, what else should they do after all?

No. I already have a system that does what I want, so I'd be upgrading for no benefit.
If my CPU was limiting me in some way I'd switch to a 5800X or something from my 3600, not go out and buy a new CPU+MB that might not have things that I want.

I think most people on Zen anything are probably fine where they are.

That said if you are on Ryzen 1xxx or 2xxx I'm not sure Alderlake is that compelling enough even if it does really well in what you use to switch from what you already know. Alderlake is interesting, and I do think big.LITTLE is the future but idk about this first iteration of it. It can definitely perform but even discounting its huge power budget I think Zen 3 is better if you look at what its able to do with its transistor budget compared to Alderlake, Zen3 is still very competitive with bigger hotter running chip. That and parts of the design had to be disabled (AVX 512 functionality) to make it work thermally and Alderlake just looks not quite ready to me.

Like many people in this thread I have a Zen 2. The fact that AMD has loyally served the AM4 socket over many chipset and processor generations is paying dividends for them now. None of us have to perform a platform upgrade to get AMD’s best offerings. We can either get a heavily discounted Zen 3 now or wait until the final AM4 refresh next year and upgrade then. All you have to buy is the cpu. Maybe a cooler if you’re going from a Ryzen 5 to a 9. No need to buy a motherboard or memory, which is a tremendous advantage for them.

I really hope crypto mining won't ruin our plans of AMD CPU upgrades. The new threat is raptoreum, that favors ryzen cpus as I heard. I fear it might affect CPU prices and availability in the near future.

I have no plans on buying new hardware any time soon, but my next build will be Intel-based because I'm tired of USB issues on Ryzen.

I'm all about performance and noise output. I made the move from a 8700K to an 5800X last year, so I'm still fine on the gaming front. With age, I've had less and less motivation to tinker and having a CPU with manageable heat output that essentially OCs itself is very appealing to me, especially in a world where high-end GPUs go beyond 350W. That being said, if the performance delta overall remains the same during the next upgrade cycle 2-3 years from now, I wouldn't have a problem switching back to Intel.

I likely won't, I'll either get a 5800x/5900x or a whatever the final am4 CPU is to replace my 3700x as I don't feel the advantage is worth a new cpu, mobo and ram, at least at that stage

Maybe Raptor Lake would tempt me to update an old 1700X but it will come down to a lot of things not just sheer performance. Let's just wait and see how Zen 4 and Zen 4c stack up against RL. Why would anyone buy into a new architecture with a heap of teething problems and high prices for cooling and motherboards and DDR5 when RL will be out in just 12 months and a lot of stuff will be ironed out and we get a doubling of E-cores on RL which are also enhanced as well as new cove P cores and lower energy use.
